One Fern Cottages is a real South Lakes gem. Nestled in the beautiful village of Lindale, the property dates back to the time of Queen Elizabeth I and William Shakespeare so one can only imagine the history that the oak beams must have seen!

The cottage has two beamed bedrooms, both of a good size and providing sleeping space for up to 5 people (1 double, 2 singles- these can be pushed together if required, please let us know when booking - and a full sized single fold out bed) . The living accommodation is of the highest standard and includes a fully fitted cottage kitchen, with all mod cons; a separate dining room which very comfortably seats 6 and a cozy lounge, together with the stunning Victorian wood burning range.

Outside there is a tranquil cottage garden with two patio areas with seating and garden dining furniture and views over the local countryside to the bay beyond.

The property is ideal for those looking to get away from it all and enjoy "home from home" comforts in beautiful surroundings. There is plenty on offer in the nearby area for the young and the young at heart, whether it is hiking in the hills (which can be done directly from the cottage), strolling along the promenade in Grange-over-Sands (which is only 2 miles away), or eating Sticky Toffee Pudding in the wonderful village of Cartmel (less than 3 miles away).

Within only a short "hop and a step" you can find more Lakeland gems such as Windermere (5 miles) [for boating and walking], Ulverston (13 miles) [for Laurel & Hardy fans], Kendal (11 miles) [for history and the market], Grizedale (12 miles) [for woodland adventure & biking] and Ambleside (18 miles) [for the shops and walks]. There are a number of golf courses in the area, with two in Grange-over-Sands.

Closer to home in the village, there is a great children's play area with equipment to suit all ages; a basket ball court and a field with football nets, all within very easy walking distance of the Cottage.

Along the promenade at Grange there is a skateboard park; exercise zone (with resistance exercise machines); play area for younger children, tennis courts, pitch and putt and also a basket ball court!

So there is be plenty to keep the whole family occupied!

Accessed via a small cobbled courtyard the property dates back to the 1600's. Whilst retaining the Olde Worlde charm that makes it special, it has a wonderful warm, light and airy feel.

The kitchen is excellently equipped with all the items you would expect for a luxury break, including a double oven and hob, dishwasher, slow cooker, microwave, toaster and kettle, a comprehensive range of pots and pans, Denby crockery, cutlery and glassware. Exposed walls, beamed ceilings and stone floor remind you that you are in a room with real history and character......check out the creative way that the units have been shaped to fit the stone walls!

Leading off from the kitchen, the separate dining room is spacious and enables you to spread out in comfort around the table. A stable door leads you to the cottage garden enabling you to "bring the outside in" during the warmer months, helping to make the most of the country setting. A full size, digital piano is also provided for your use.

Connected to the dining room via a traditional low doorway, the lounge has comfy sofas and the stunning centre piece of a wood burning Victorian range. A flat screen TV, DVD player and stereo are provided, although many guests have found simply watching the flames of the logs burning just as relaxing!

Also downstairs there is a separate toilet, and a separate utility room containing a washing machine and tumble drier....just in case the weather gets the better of you! This room also has ample storage for walking boots, coats etc.

Facing south the cottage enjoys views over fields to Morecambe bay and has a sunny aspect, particularly in the master bedroom which has a double bed, wardrobe and dresser decorated in a stylish cream and gold. The second beamed bedroom is spacious and sleeps 3 comfortably in 2 single beds and a fold out chair bed (this is a solid metal framed full size single bed), as needed (a hairdryer is provided in the master bedroom).

The bathroom is luxurious, with a bath and monsoon shower, together with an incredible sloping floor!

Being south facing, the garden is a real sun trap and you may wish to simply relax with a book and a drink watching the sun go down. You don't even need to leave your seat to eat as a BBQ is provided, or you could simply reach out your hand and pluck an apple or damson from the trees!

The garden has two patio areas, one to the rear of the property and one to the side to make the most of the sun and shade at different times of the day. As there a couple of steps in the garden it would not be ideal for very young children unless supervised, or those with mobility issues.

There is a large separate off road parking space, for guests exclusive use.

A welcome pack is provided upon your arrival, ensuring that you have the immediate essentials to hand. The content includes tea, coffee, milk, sugar and biscuits to help you relax after your journey and plan what to do next. We also provide an initial supply of washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets, toilet and kitchen rolls.

To help with planning your holiday a range of books are provided giving you information on points of interest, days out and suggested walks, along with OS maps. There is also a library of reading books, as well as a number of board games and DVDs to help you to while away the time.

Although the second bedroom has two single beds, these can be put together upon request. The duvets would however still be single duvets. Should you require this option please let us know at the time of booking.

The chair bed in the second bedroom, is a solid metal framed, full size single bed and should you require this please advise us at the time of booking.

There are no further charges for gas and electricity. An initial supply of logs is provided and more can be purchased locally.

The Cumbria/Lake District

The Lake District is an area of outstanding natural beauty that attracts tourists from around the World, with One Fern Cottage being ideally situated to explore and enjoy all of the delights of the Lakes, whether it is walking straight from the doorstep onto the Fells, or using a car to explore further afield.

There are more than 3,500 kms of rights of way within the Lake District for you to explore on foot, bike, or horseback, so you can always find your own space, even during the more busy Summer months. The Lake District is Englands most popular area for walking, with visitors able to find something to suit all ages and all levels of exertion, from a gentle stroll along a Victorian promenade at Grange-over-Sands, to the more serious hill walking on classic routes to the Old Man of Coniston, Helvellyn, or Scafell Pike (the highest peak in England).

Of course every peak also has a valley and the Lake District has some of the most beautiful you will find anywhere, with bubbling becks, gentle waterfalls and rolling hills......Borrowdale, Great Langdale and Eskdale are just 3 of the many that you can explore.

Cycling in the Lake District area is wonderful, with quiet roads through rolling countryside, or for those of you who prefer more of a challenge, there is always the 112 mile Fred Whitton Challenge, which starts at Coniston and climbs over 6 of the highest passes in the Lakes.......not for the faint hearted! As you might expect, off road biking is some of the best you will find anywhere, with Whinlatter Forest and Grizedale Forest being criss crossed with routes suitable for beginners through to more challenging levels.

The area is a real food heaven, with 3 Michelin starred restaurants not far from the Cottage. There is the Holbeck Ghyll (near to Ambleside), the Samling Hotel (again, near to Ambleside) and L'enclume in Cartmel, just three miles from the cottage. Of course, there are many other great eating places to suit all taste buds and budgets, as well as some great shops and local markets such as Arnside Country Market (on every Friday) selling local produce.

As you can see there really is something for everybody, but to "tickle your fancy", below are some of the events taking place within the Lakes this year, all of which are within easy reach from the Cottage.

Cartmel Races - these take place just 3 miles from the cottage and the dates for 2014 are Sat 19th Jul, Mon 21st Jul, Sat 23rd Aug and Mon 25th Aug.

Grange-over-Sands

Lindale is an attractive village set within the Lake District National Park. Narrow lanes, old cottages, a traditional Post Office, a lovely church, a bubbling beck and a traditional pub give the village a real picture postcard feel. The area around Lindale has something for everybody, whether walking straight from the door or touring around the area, the scenery is simply awesome and has been the inspiration for many great poets, such as Wordsworth. Tennyson and Sir Walter Scott.

The towns and villages nearby have much to offer visitors, for foodies and sport lovers the beautiful village of Cartmel is less than 3 miles away. Home to the fabulous sticky toffee pudding, it also hosts one of the most exciting events in the horse racing calendar and even has a Michelin starred restaurant! With a beautiful Priory, stunning scenery and walks there is plenty to see and do.

Grange -over Sands was once a simple fishing village, however the advent of the Haverthwaite railway lead to a boom for Grange-over-Sands (2 miles). Even today it still retains its Edwardian charm with a traffic-free promenade, ornamental gardens, a duck pond and even a brass band stand (which hosts concerts). Many of the shops still sell local produce with Higginsons Butchers well worth a visit. The village also boasts two golf clubs.

Kendal the largest town of the area is only 8 miles from Fern Cottages. Kendal has a long history, with each era having left a mark that can still be seen today from a motte and bailey castle, to the town's traditional industry of wool and of course, perhaps its most famous export, Kendal Mint Cake.

Windermere (5 miles) is the largest natural lake (or mere) in England and probably the best known lake in the Lake District. There are so many things to do on or near to Windermere that it is difficult to cover them all here, whether it is boating, the steam railway, enjoying Fell Foot Country Park or taking a simple stroll around Bowness.

Ambleside is at the head of Windermere and is a bit of a mecca for walkers and day trippers alike. Whilst strolling the streets you will come across much to while away your time, to include The Homes of Football photographic art gallery and the fascinating Bridge House. If you are looking for outdoor clothing and equipment then Ambleside is definitely the place to be, with a breathtaking number of shops to choose from.

Barrow-in-Furness has a long history of manufacture and enterprise, with ship building still very much at the heart of the town. The Dockyard museum is a fantastic look back at its maritime history......and it is free!

Steam lovers young and old will enjoy the Haverthwaite railway (7 miles), whilst the South Lakes Wild Animal Park at Dalton is an unexpected treat (18 miles).

"Perfect comfortable stay"

We have stayed here now for 3 holidays and we return because of the comfort, warmth and cosiness of this lovely cottage in the South Lakes. The cottage a great balance for us of traditional character with modern comfort and the standards of furnishing, maintenance and cleanliness is very high.

Thanks for pointing out about the logs and the heating. We will check the company we use for the logs and make sure their number hasn't changed recently.
The heating is normally left on permanently in the winter and controlled via the thermostat. We will check the instruction booklet, as there should be one in the Cottage, but sometimes this does get moved.
We really appreciate the time and effort that goes into making a review and hope to welcome you back to One Fern Cottages in the future.
