However, if you wanted to go further a field Verchaix is only a 40 minute drive away from the famous Chamonix Mont Blanc where, for the extremely adventurous amongst you, you can ski the famous Vallee Blanche which is an off-piste ski route, 17km long with a vertical descent of 2800m. The views are stunning and the high mountain environment provides a real sensation of wilderness. This is one of those memorable life experiences. Grand Massif / Verchaix area
Verchaix is located in the valley of the Giffre, 6 km below Samoens and close to Morillon. The valley itself continues as far as Sixt Fer-a Cheval, where it ends in a spectacular rock amphitheatre. As a result, there is no through traffic in the valley. There is a market which takes place during summer and winter, just a few minutes walk from the Farm. There is also a boulangeris, restaurant and bar within walking distance of the Farm.
Samoens is a historic village that has retained much of its original charm despite the development of leisure facilities, including the opening of a new ski-lift, the Grand Massif Express, in 2003. It is the only protected ski resort in France and completely different in appearance and character from all the purpose-built resorts in the French Alps.
Morillon village was built up around the 16th century church of St Chrisophe and Town Hall. There are guided tours through the village every Thursday at 1030am. Morillon prides itself for being awarded the ‘Famille Plus’ award which is the unique national tourism label to approve the facilities and services available to families with children, it is recognised by the French ministry of tourism.
The Giffre is a charming unspoilt valley that has long been favoured by French families for both winter and summer vacations. Although attracting an increasingly international clientele, it remains very French in ambience.
In summer, the valley offers a wide range of sporting and leisure activities including swimming, tennis, riding, walking, climbing, cycling, mountain biking, white-water rafting and hang-gliding. There are also several excellent golf courses within easy reach.
