The Rhone / French Alps / Haute-Savoie region
Haute-Savoie contains many of the well known ski resorts and is attractive to holidaymakers due to its ease of access from the French motorway network and also its proximity of only one Hour drive from Geneva, with its world wide air links. The climate is enviable with the clean air, magical winter landscape and generally long hot summers. It is very easy to Visit places such as Annecy, Yvoire, Italy , Megeve and Chamonix , either to ski or drive to in the Summer. The Summers are hot and Samoens has numerous outdoor cafes and outdoor entertainment . Samoens is at the end of a beautiful protected Valley and Wildlife can be seen on the numerous surrounding Climbs and Walks . The Village if Sixt has the CASCADE DE ROUGET, one of Franc's major Waterfall attractions, and Vultures have recently been introduced to the Mountain Tops There is also the Jardin Botanique in Samoens to visit with over 8000 Alpine Plant Species
Few people realise that Savoie and Haute-Savoie only became part of France in 1860 whereby the ruler of Savoie became the first king of a united Italy by offering Savoie to France in exchange for French recognition of his claim.
Grand Massif / Samoens area
NB THE TOUR DE FRANCE IN 2010, passes near Samoens, and has its REST day in MORZINE on the 11th July 2010. A stay in our Chalet in Samoens would afford you an easy vantage point 5 kms Away
The Grand Massif is recognised as one of the loveliest ski regions in the Alps. Certainly , it has an amazing variety of runs for skiers of all abilities incorporated in 260 kms of linked pistes This year 2009/2010 there is another Express lift so that you can ski to Flaine area in half the time . Samoens has swiftly become a well known resort since the introduction of the Grand Massif Express lift which transports skiers from the village to the plateau at Samoens 1600 where the action starts. There is a sledge run for the Children at the top of 1600 there is also an outdoor Skating rink.
In summer Samoens is a magnet for visitors...both holidaymakers and day trippers....due to its quaint mediaeval atmosphere in the carefully preserved village centre. The surrounding scenery is STUNNING and always draws your breath . Samoens is in a designated beauty area . In addition there are many leisure activities....riding, white water rafting, canoeing, hiking, cycling, walking and...for the brave...paragliding. The Jaysinia botanical garden attracts tourists from all over the world. There are 600 kms of MOUNTAIN BIKE trails. The Express lift in Samoens is open in July and August to take you to Samoens 1600. to walk or Mountain Bike. The Indiana Park is great fun and enjoyed by all age groups. The small beach and lake at Morillon, 2 kms away, is popular with young children There are walks to suit all abilities, the easy ones run along side the GIffre River . Samoens is well place and within an hour by car and you can visit Geneva and the surrounding Villages of Charm .
How to get there
Twenty British airports offer direct flights to Geneva and airlines include Easyjet, Jet2, Bmi Baby, ThomsonFly , Swiss and British Airways but some services are seasonal. All the major car hire companies are represented at Geneva and visitors are advised to pre-book online to avoid unnecessary delays on arriving by air. We advise that you book cars on the Swiss side of the airport as exit and access is easier than on the French side.
We frequently suggest Argus car hire who will search for the best deals available from the rental companies.
For clients who prefer to drive, most of our visitors use Dover-Calais/Boulogne and L D Lines generally offer the most competitive rates and quickest crossing via Boulogne. Allow nine hours for the 545 miles of which 500 are motorways costing 65€. If stopping overnight, Reims is a convenient city where several budget hotel chains have sites.
