Enquire nowThe Rhone / French Alps / Haute-Savoie region
The beautiful village of Samoens is located in the Giffre valley about an hours drive from Geneva. Unlike many ski resorts, the village has a life of its own outside the ski season. Restaurants, bars and shops remain open and there is plenty to see and do in Samoens and the local area. The village comprises shops of all trades, banks, a medical centre and bars.
Samoens is quite unspoilt and has been declared an Historical Monument. Its chapels and expert stonecutting traditions make it a place of great interest and also worthy of note is the Great Linden Tree which stands in the centre of the town, and which was planted in 1438.
It is a traditional Savoyard market town, consisting of a mixture of wooden and stone built houses, reflecting the history and craftsmanship of the region. There is a weekly market in the village, which offers you the chance to sample local produce and the cheese factory in the village is open to the public.
This spectacular and beautiful area is protected and hence hasn’t been spoilt by tourism. Samoens has been awarded a ‘Coq d’Or’ for being one of the prettiest villages in France and is the only ski resort classified by the Caisse des Monuments Historiques. The villages are full of character and charm with quaint streets, yet still provides the centre for almost every outdoor activity imaginable.
Based in the beautiful valley of the Giffre river, the area provides spectacular scenery including mountain lakes, national parks and botanical gardens plus amazing wildlife and just minutes up the road at Sixt Fer a Cheval are over a dozen enormous waterfalls. It has a great deal to offer for families and individuals of all ages seeking adventure or alternatively just sheer relaxation.
The Grand Massif / Samoens area
There are numerous excellent restaurants, including bistros, gourmet, traditional French Savoyard and Pizzerias. A range of cafes and bars and numerous shops cater for all your needs, many of which are located around the historic square. There are typical French markets, beautiful churches, health and beauty parlours, cash points, doctors, chemists, a cinema, an ice skating rink, creche, swimming pools in summer, bakeries, supermarkets and everything else you would expect from well equipped mountain resorts. The Tourist Office puts on various entertainments in the village square ranging from kids' events to antique fairs throughout the year.
Skiing:-
The ski bus stop is 100m and takes 2 minutes to the Grand Massif Express telecabine which then takes you up to 1600m. New chair lifts installed for 2010 ski season. Excellent ski schools and crèche facilities are available in the resort.
The Grand Massif is the third biggest ski area in the Alps and includes the ski areas of Flaine, Samoens, Morillon, Les Carroz and Sixt reaching up to 2500m. Many of the major slopes are north facing and so retain their snow for longer than many resorts.
Climbing:-
There is excellent climbing nearby, including the Haut Giffre (Les Dents Blanches and Les Avoudrues) and spectacular limestone cliffs at Sixt Fer a Cheval. The Gorges des Tines also has several excellent sports climbing sectors: the Tines sector, with routes ranging from 5a to 8a, the Fonts sector, with routes from 5c to 8b, and the Dard area.
For those who are looking to try something a little different, there is also the Mont Via Ferrata perched high on the dramatic Mont crags, and - last but not least - the classic alpine routes in the nearby Mont Blanc Massif.
Also there is ice climbing, cross country skiing, dog sledding, ice skating, caving, snowshoeing, sledging, paragliding etc. In high season a children’s train runs around the resort.
In the summer, the resort has lots to offer; mountain biking, walking, white water rafting, paracending, lakes and adventure parks for the children including outdoor swimming pool complex.
It is an ideal base to watch the Tour de France.
