Most importantly , the area holds one of the lowest ratios of accommodation capacity to the number of ski lifts which makes for very little queuing !
Samoens Village has an altitude of around 700m, although the ski area starts at Samoens 1600m.
Samoens was voted “best small resort” in Europe by the famous Hardy’s Skiing & Snowboarding Guide 2009 and was featured in the Telegraph’s “100 Best Ski Holidays 2009”.
The Grand Massif ski area (www.grand-massif.com ) is France’s fifth largest and due to its geographical location enjoys abundant , regular snow falls . With 80% of the slopes north-facing , this allows snow to lie for longer and remain in good condition.
The Grand Massif Ski Slopes are open until the end of April 2012 depending on snow conditions, although we would recommend that you check with the local tourist website (www.samoens.com).
There is an Ecole du Ski Francais with booking and enquiries office located next door to the Tourist Office in the Town Centre. Lessons are given between mid December and early April.
The school’s contact details are :-

The Grand Massif / Samoens area
Samoens is located in the northern French Alps between Morzine and Chamonix, one hour’s drive from Geneva.
This spectacular and beautiful area is protected and hasn’t been spoilt by tourism.
Samoens was awarded the “Coq d’Or” for being one of the most picturesque villages in France and the only ski resort classified by the Caisse des Monuments Historiques.
Based at the heart of the Grand Massif Mountain Region and nestled in the stunning valley of the Giffre River, the Samoens area provides spectacular scenery, including mountain lakes, national parks, waterfalls, botanical gardens and an abundance of wildlife.
Samoens is conveniently located within the Grand Massif, which is made up of several other beautiful villages (Morillon, Les Carroz, Flaine and Sixt Fer A Cheval) and offers extensive skiing and snowboarding .
There are over 25 restaurants in the town, which include bistros, gourmet, traditional French Savoyard and pizzerias. A range of cafes and bars and numerous shops are provided, which are located off the historic square. The town has a beautiful church, several chocolatiers, health spas and beauty parlours, 3 banks and cash points, doctors, 6 sports hire shops, 2 chemists, a dozen bars, over 40 shops, a cinema, ice skating rink, crèche, swimming pool (in the Summer), 3 bakeries and 3 supermarkets. There is a Tourist Office, which puts on various entertainments in the Village Square, ranging from children’s events to antique and craft fairs, throughout the year.
Both Morillon and Samoens hold weekly typical French markets for locals and tourists.
The resort has been labelled as a “Famille Plus Montagne” Resort and is an ideal family destination.
There are many other activities to pursue in winter and include cross country skiing , ice skating , snow mobiles , archery , caving and indoor climbing.
