The Rhone / French Alps / Haute-Savoie region
Wonderful towns such as Annecy (the Venice of the Apls), Geneva, Evian, Lausanne, Montreaux, Courmayer and many others within Switzerland, France and Italy are within an hours drive. Mont Blanc is just 45 minutes away.
Yvoire is a beautiful, medieval walled village, on the shores of Lac Leman and well worth a visit. Next to Yvoire is the village of Excenevex, and we recommend the Hotel de la Plage for lunch, and to use their beach to swim in the lake after lunch. Food is good, about €24 ph and €10 per child for the set menu – but, you also get to use the beach and very safe swimming. The hotel is very old, and used mainly by the local French. Yvoire is in France, so no vignette (tax) is needed.
Annecy is a particular favourite destination of ours and a delight to visit at any time during the year.
The area abounds with lakes, rivers, mountains and all the sports associated with them, and some of the finest mountain golf courses in Europe with stunning scenery, uncrowded fairways and beautifully maintained greens.
Grand Massif / Samoens area
Samoens facilities:
Samoëns has 13 restaurants, 12 café's and pubs, and 11 further restaurants within hotels; two chemists, two small local supermarkets, a number of excellent delicatessens, very good chocolatiers, numerous ski shops, clothes shops and boutiques and of course, there are many bakeries selling croissants, baguettes and delicious cakes.
A Champion supermarket is 2km outside the village, and Carrefour hypermarket is located in Cluses, 17km away.
Samoens has an excellent open street market on a Wednesday morning. The visitor centre and the ESF shop (ski school) are located near the ice-skating rink. The alpine Botanic Gardens “La Jaysinia” are located in town, are free to walk around. Excellent views of the village from the top of the path, plus waterfalls.
The outdoor leisure complex is situated an easy 1.5km walk (or 5 to 10 minute cycle) and boasts two beautiful lakes for fishing and boating, football pitches, 6 tennis courts, basketball/skatepark, play park for children, archery and a golf driving range into the lake! In addition, there are two large swimming pools (one for 'swimming' and the other for 'playing'), an infants pool and a 60m water slide (tenins, swimming and archery are payable).
Also within the leisure complex is the Tarzan-style "Indiana Park" forest park, which consists of climbing rope ladders, crossing suspended bridges between trees then whizzing down zip lines! There are different courses based on age and ability.
White water rafting, mountain biking, via ferrata, potholing, climbing, paragliders/parapenters (to mention just a few activities!) are all available locally.
Samoens and surrounding areas:
In summer various bands and musicians play in the town centre during the day and in the evening, and sometimes in the park at Samoens or Morillon. These concerts are usually free. During all peak holiday times there are usually activities in the town centre and guided tours of the village are given in both French and English. Do take a trip to the village of Sixt – 5 miles away – they have the most incredible waterfalls – up to 30 at certain times of the year. The “Cascade Rouget” waterfall is a must.
There are hundreds of miles of cycle paths, which are well marked with distance, difficulty and approximate length of time. In the high season it is possible to take bikes up the mountains on chairlifts and to cycle down. There are too many fantastic walks to mention and plenty of mountain "refuges" if you should fancy a night in the mountains!
Skiing Information:
Over 265 km of ski slopes are available in the Grand Massif ski area. There is fantastic skiing for the intermediate and beginner skier, while the advanced skier is also very well catered for.
The area consist of 5 very well linked resorts - Samoëns, Morillon, Flaine, Sixt and les Carroz which range in height from 1,600m to 2,500m. It is possible to ski from resort to resort without even taking your ski's off!
There are virtually no crowds, and very little, if any, queuing is necessary. NEW for Winter 2009/2010 a new 6 man lift in Samoens to Tete des Saix. Make time to do the breathtaking 14 km long ‘Cascades’ ski slope which criss crosses the Sixt Fer a Cheval nature reserve giving you a unique skiing experience. Free bus back to the telecabine in Samoens from Sixt.
There is 'Jampark Concept' ski area in Flaine. This is state of the art snow terrain park.
The free Ski Bus stops right outside the chalet (20m from door), and takes you the 900m to the Grand Massif Express telecabine entrance at Samoëns. The telecabine whisks you up to 1,600m. The bus trip takes no more than 5 minutes.

Guestbook for 3 Chalet du Grand Massif
We have stayed in the chalet during both the summer and winter seasons over a number of years and keep going back. Steve & Michelle have created a real home from home. The chalet is warm and welcoming in winter and light and airy in summer - perfect. It is not huge but is certainly good value. They are also very generous in allowing the use of most of their kit (computer games are great for the kids but you have to repair your own punctures if you use the bikes). Location is also great - quiet but with good access to the town and easy access to the cable car. Samoens is a fab place. Monmouthshire.
Our group of five, including three teenage girls, had a fab week's break here in late April - last week of the skiing season, so we were able to make the most of excellent snow, blue skies, and uncrowded slopes. The apartment was great - plenty of space, thoughtfully provided with all the facilities we could possibly have needed (between us we used the iPod station and internet continuously when at home!), and a pleasure to come back to at the end of each invigorating/exhausting (depending on age) day. Wonderful views from balcony. And we also much appreciated the advance information and communications from Steve (the owner) who went above and beyond in helping us to get the most out of our stay. Thank you! We do hope to return some time. Jane & Alan, Surrey.
This is a beautiful chalet that is very well equipped and provided a welcoming and relaxing base to explore the wonderful skiing and surrounding countryside. We were a couple and a mum and a teenage daughter but the layout is such that we all had plenty of space from each other. And the broadband is great to occupy teens. The owner has been marvellous in responding to queries and provided a substantial amount of information to make everything run smoothly. The 'welcome' pack was very generous and gratefully received after the journey. The location of Samoens is really accessible from Geneva and the village itself is so pretty with some gorgeous local produce. Really recommended! Hertfordshire.
We, a family of five adults, stayed here in January and had a great time, our first visit to the French alps. Everything you need is here, the chalet is comfortable, the village is a couple of minutes walk, the bus to the cable car stops just outside, although we used the car and importantly the people in the pretty village of Samoens seem very friendly and helpful. The views are superb. Highly recommended! Newcastle upon Tyne.
This was our 4th visit to Samoens and the chalet. It was home from home with everything provided to make us feel welcome. Thank you for the welcome pack it was very much appreciated after our long journey. The Sunday changeover day made travelling extremely easy and quiet and the skiing on Saturday was virtually queue free. Anyone wanting ski lessons should try zigzag ski school based in Samoens. Melanie - Kendal
