Further details indoors: Mike & Emma bought this huge cortijo Farmhouse in 2002 and spent the next two years lovingly restoring it to its full grandeur and adding the modern airy barn conversion - The Casita. In 2004 we welcomed our first summer guests and were bowled over by the response. Eight years on we have made many improvements to the luxury of Finca El Almendrillo. . The 150 year old Farmhouse consists of: - seven picturesque pine-beamed bedrooms. - most can be adapted to twin or double use. - sofa-beds in two living and walk-through rooms provide extra sleeping space. - Gran Sala (11 by 7.5 metres) is a cool and ambient woodlined refuge to meet and chat/watch a DVD/use WiFi during the mid-day heat.
The Casita is a sensitive architect-designed barn conversion offering some independence from the rest of the group with • -three more bedrooms • -second indoor kitchen • Altogether the Finca boasts ample space for 20 or even more (contact owner).
Further details outdoors: Finca el Almendrillo is an acre and a half (6000 square metres) of rural haven in total privacy surrounded by the whirr of crickets in the picturesque olive groves. -To the south the famous view of goat pasture and oak forest stretching to the hills of the Sierra de Loja and to the east the majestic Sierra Nevada. -Traditional central courtyard provides a focus for daily life with its own outdoor kitchen featuring huge barbecue and catering grade cooker (catering arranged on request). -Two enclosed private gardens. -Numerous balconies, terraces and shaded spots. -Massive 17 metre / 55 foot pool (deep and shallow end, roman steps for toddler paddling) adjacent to generous terrace and pergola. -Pool is gated, fenced and a distance from house to ensure child safety.

Finca El Almendrillo occupies an almost unique position happily placed equally distant from the Andalucian big three ancient sities (Granada, Cordoba, Sevilla) and the Coast at Malaga (Costa del Sol) and Motril and La Herradura (Costa Tropical). All of these are easily within 90 minutes drive from El Almendrillo, save for Sevilla which will take a little more than 2 hours on the direct A92 motorway.
Within this area Granada Province and it’s neighbours offer an untold wealth of popular destinations (including the magnificent Ronda) and unknown corners of the real Spain, quiet and virtually unseen by tourists in decades – for example upland parts of the romantic Alpujarras.
Throughout the region weather is guaranteed sunny and hot during the summer months.
The Granada area
Many holiday-makers at El Almendrillo never leave the Finca ! But if after a few days’ poolside relaxation (and an idyllic, safe environment for young and old) you feel the need to get out and about , 10 minutes drive from El Almendrillo there is the village of Fuente del Conde with supermarket and Los Pajaritos bar and restaurant. En route you will pass through beautiful countryside seeing (with luck) baby goats, sheep, hoopoes and peacocks.
Further afield we can help you organise horse-riding for novices or fully-experienced (or both together), tennis or point you in the right direction for unforgettable views on a day’s walk or mountain-bike trip to the spectacular limestone crags of Torcal and the amazing Wolf Park.
Within 15 minutes drive there are four restaurants which we are happy to recommend giving a variety of local cuisine – traditional and modern. In the nearby white town of Iznajar there are bars, restaurants and a 9th century Moorish citadel to explore. Further afield (30 mins drive) the towns of Loja and Archidona offer real Spain, shopping and a pleasant, relaxed café society.
All guests receive an email giving useful information about their future holiday and on arrival at Finca El Almendrillo you will find an up-to-date file giving suggestions of outings (water-parks, zoo) near and far. We are happy to respond to queries and questions from the moment you click on us to the last day of your holiday !

The Finca is situated in the middle of the beautiful Andalucian countryside without any immediate neighbours, offering great privacy. It is remote and idyllic, accessed by a narrow country road that climbs the hill overlooking the local town and takes you through farms and olive groves and despite its rustic nature, was easily navigated by our very basic hired people carrier! We holidayed in the Finca with another family and the owner couldn't have been more helpful in preparing for a great stay. We bombarded Mike before our departure with endless requests about cots, high chairs etc. and no request was too much for him. The attentive service before departure was matched by a very Warm welcome on arrival- a fridge with the essentials and the vast house set out as requested. The property itself was beautifully situated with ample space for the 12 of us (with plenty of space for more) with seemingly endless numbers of bedrooms to choose from. There is a beautiful open courtyard where we could all have dinner al fresco and upon request Mike had arranged for local chefs to come in and cook for us for a couple of the nights. The food and the setting were wonderful. The courtyard doubled up as a playground for the 5 children (and adults) who could entertain themselves for hours. There were huge numbers of distractions- a pool table, table tennis table, table football, Wi-Fi and of course the enormous swimming pool to keep us all entertained. The pool was the largest pool we had seen for such a holiday and had a wonderful almost 270 degree view of the beautiful tree covered hills surrounding the house. In short, we spent a wonderful week at the Finca all aided by great hosts who made the stay special and go without a hitch. We would thoroughly recommend this as a holiday destination- whether your family are young or old. I hope you enjoy yourselves as much as we did.

“Excellent holiday house and pool, so much to offer and suitable for all ages.”
We had the most wonderful holiday at the farmhouse, four families including 10 children. There was plenty to do including tree climbing, scooters, bikes, table football, table tennis, chess and of course swimming in the wonderful, large swimming pool. Our group have been holidaying together for over 10 years in many different properties and this is definitely one of the best houses and swimming pools! We also had the luxury of enjoying the Olympics on the tv in the evenings!. For older children, teenagers and adults the free wifi was also a must!! The house is clean and tidy and each bedroom is a good size. The bathrooms are lovely with spacious showers and rustic tiling. The central courtyard area is perfect for eating and drinking in the evenings and the outside kitchen is a great asset. There is a good local supermarket and a great bar serving wonderful coffee ! The owners have always been on hand when we needed to speak / email them and their manager was very friendly and helpful. He even let the children have a play in the water sprinklers! We will be returning next year and have already booked up!
We have just returned from this beautiful villa and it is one of the most special places I have ever stayed. I travelled with my extended family, old and young and everyone had an amazing time. It has the most perfect setting, the view from the terrace is simply stunning and the sunsets are spectacular. I traveled with a large family group and the FInca more than accomadated everyone in comfort. We had 12 in our party but the Finca could easily of fit more. The Finca itself has been renovated tastefully, keeping the original features while adding modern comforts. The owner Mike was more than helpful and arranged a number of delicious catered dinners. He is also very knowledgable on the local area and helped us plan a few day trips to local towns. I would recommend this villa to anyone, I have not a bad word to say about it. We had the most perfect family holiday.

“Top place for families”
We had a fantastic time here. The house is home to Mike and his family for most of the year, and it certainly has the lived in feel as opposed to a holiday rental feel. There are loads of bikes, a table tennis table and plenty of sun loungers hammocks just where you want to find them (ie away from everyone else). There is also, in case you hadn't noticed, a huge swimming pool. It is absolutely perfect, with 180 views onto the olive-covered valley below.
The rooms are great and the showers are fantastic. The central courtyard has the long trestle-table, and many evenings were spent dining under the stars till all hours.
Mike the owner is incredibly efficient in the booking process, answering every query promptly and generally making it all pain-free. His directions to the house are a masterpiece - we got their first time. We would definitely recommend El Almedrillo.

“Excellent Group Holiday Venue”
We went with a group of 20, which consisted of four families each with 3 children from babies up to teenagers.
There was so much room for everyone I never felt cluttered or in any ones way. All families had two or three bedrooms (all of good size and most with bathrooms). There are two kitchens and good indoor eating spaces if it's too hot outside. The property is old and quirky with thick walls and lots of interesting features e.g. traditional doors and beams.
Outside is also great. Lots of room for everyone to explore. Numerous areas for sitting to either enjoy the views, relax on the hammocks or play table tennis. It also feels extremely safe with no scary drops etc that you have to keep an eye on. The best part of course is the huge pool which was enjoyed by everyone. There are lots of seating spaces and good shade for the middle of the day. (Also has a toilet next to the pool).
The views are fantastic and you get a great feeling of remoteness with just the occasional tractor going past. To get to the house you have to drive quite a way off the main road along some small tracks which is a bit of an adventure the first time you do it, but the excellent directions made sure no one got lost.
We had a great week and I wish we could have stayed longer - exceeded my expectations.

“Stunning location, property and ground - 100% reconmended!”
We go on holiday with a large group of friends every two years. There are 4 families all with 3 children, so a grand total of 8 adults and 12 children whose ages range from a 9 month old baby to a 12 year old. This was around the 4th or 5th place we had stayed in as a group and everyone agreed this one was by far the best!
The Finca is set in an amazing location with stunning views over the unspoilt countryside in large and interesting grounds which are safe and secure for the young ones and lots of interesting places to explore and relax for the older children and adults. The properties were both full of character, yet obviously carefully restored with loads of Spanish charm, but also with many modern luxuries such as many ensuites. The views from the some of the bedroom windows are amazing, whilst the top floor of the farmhouse is a great space with wooden floors, comfy sofa's and a great balcony looking out at the mountains in the distance and olive groves. Both kitchens were a great size and perfect for preparing food and eating.
Outside the pool was a massive hit with the children and adults. It was a really good size and had a nice shaded area and plenty of sun loungers and even an outdoor toilet and shower. The provision of beach towels as part of the linen pack for each bed was a great help too meaning we didn't have to bring heavy towels in our luggage.
Having arranged a number of holidays for our group I always feel you can get a good indication of how good somewhere is likely to be from the responses you get prior to a booking and the help provided and Mike was excellent from the initial query through to when we are actually staying at the property. The information in the property was also really good with a folder of useful information and places to go. Mike even arranged for catering in advance for our group with a local chef he knew where we pre-ordered meals for two nights and had some great food cooked and served for our group. This was a big hit with the adults and is highly recommended - they even did the washing up!! The directions to the property was also worth a mention as 3 of the families in our group arrived late at night in the dark and made it straight to the house without any drama due to the amazingly detailed and helpful directions helping with the journey up the hill to finca.
Overall, I cannot recommend the property enough - stunning location, great property, grounds and facilities for a relaxing holiday.

“It doesn't get any better than this”
Almendrillo is amazing. It's even better than it looks on the website. Difficult to believe I know, but it really is all that and more.
You look at the photos and read the description, then you look at the photos some more, and you remember website trickery and holiday disgruntlements of previous years, and you think “It can't be that perfect. They must be hiding something.”
But it is that perfect. They are not hiding anything. In fact, it's the opposite. They wish they could show you more. You need to feel the warmth and hear the cicadas and smell the barbecue and taste the Rioja and see the stars and the breathtaking panoramic vista that no photograph could ever capture. You need to experience the sense of peace and calm and family joy that comes with sharing all this in so generous and handsome a space as Almendrillo provides. And the only way you get to do that is if you go there. And then you don't want to leave. I've been planning my next visit from the second day of my first one.
Get my email address from Mike and Emma if you need persuading.
The beautiful, cool house and the ample grounds have so many interlinking varied spaces, so well organised and furnished, that, however many of you are there, you need never feel too crowded, nor too sparse. It's expansive and rather grand, yet homely and comfortable at the same time. You feel like a Spanish Don, lord of all you survey - and you can survey a huge amount of idyllic Spanish countryside - but you also feel you can sit in your pants and watch the BBC if you like, or share a cup of tea and a natter around one of six different dining tables or in any number of sitting room / lounge type areas. I'm not even sure I saw every room in the place after a week there.
The interior is stunning but the outdoor spaces are what makes Almendrillo so special - beautiful gardens, courtyards, games areas and a barbecue kitchen draped in vines. A choice of tables and views to enjoy while eating al fresco. And NONE OF IT OVERLOOKED IN ANY WAY. The nearest neighbour is out of sight back over the ridge. Total privacy, total seclusion - but safe in the knowledge that the village is within walking distance and larger towns are a short drive away.
There is no noise, apart from the afore mentioned cicadas and the occasional clank of a tractor ploughing the distant fields beyond the olive groves.
And the pool. Oh my word. The pool is clean, refreshing and HUGE. You can swim proper lengths, not pretend holiday-pool ones - stretching your muscles while looking at the mountains across the valley and the swallows swooping over you. You can fit a full-family, rowdy game of water polo in there. Several of you can drift around on lilos and never meet. Or you could leave all that to the kids and take your pick of fifteen different loungers in sun or shade and fall asleep with a book and glass of beer.
Mike and Emma are generous and considerate hosts. They stay in a house in a nearby village and leave you completely to your own devices, unless you need their help. One of our children was ill during the holiday and their concern and good advice meant we were able to get the right help very quickly (and for free!) - our son was soon on the road to recovery and we were all able to get back to enjoying our holiday.
I've never been anywhere that accommodates so many people so comfortably and safely, and in such style. I cherish the memory of our time there and look forward to many happy returns.
Whilst the U.K. celebrated a rain soaked Jubilee our party of 12 enjoyed a week of sunshine at El Almendrillo in June 2012. The first family to arrive at the farmhouse sent a text to those of us en route -'it's stunning'.
Like many visitors before us we were multi – generational. (3year old through to Grandma) The joy of the house (houses) is that everyone can be accommodated and everyone can find their own space – I think this would be true for larger parties (we had bedrooms to spare). There is always a corner to read quietly and wherever you are you will be staggered by the fabulous views. If respite from the views and sunshine is needed the house is comfortable and cool. If you really need it internet, satellite and British TV channels are available (couldn't resist having a peak at a rain soaked Queen and lots of damp Union Jacks).
The pool is a real treat. It's actually nearer to the house than it looks on the site, (handy for the tea and beer run) but very safe if the gate is kept shut. Big enough to have a proper swim, shallow steps for the little ones, shaded area and plenty of sun beds.
If you need to leave this remote paradise Granada is an easy drive (just over an hour) and the lake at Isnajar is worth a visit.
Mike and Emma were welcoming and provided lots of useful local advice – even sending a forgotten swim suit back to the UK for us!
Final words from the 10 year old – “It's an awesome place”.

“Amazing and Unforgettable Stay in Spain”
We stayed at Mike's house for two weeks this summer. We had a large group (27 total)-- consisting of babies, children, adults and grandparents. Everyone felt completely comfortable, with plenty of space to hang out with each other or get away to be alone to read or rest. The main house and casita are spacious, but we spent most of our time outside enjoying all the different sitting areas and views. We circulated between time at the pool- which is enormous, dinner in the courtyard with the outdoor kitchen, in the side yard where Mike and Emma have a playhouse, hammocks, and "rock wall" for the kids to enjoy, and in the backyard where the ping pong tables are. There are beautiful old trees to climb, and hammocks scattered in different areas of the property. We wanted the children to see more of Spain, but they did not want to leave the Finca. Mike found us a great baby sitter, so that the adults could do some day trips. You don't have to worry about packing entertainment for the kids- Mike provides more than enough toys, games, books, scooters, bikes etc for all to enjoy. Mike also provided gates for stairways since we had toddlers in our group. There are several really nice towns to visit- Loja, Antequera, Iznajar, and Rute are just a few of them. Larger cities, like Granada and Malaga are an hour away. Sevilla was a two hour drive. Ths is the perfect place to come, especially if you have small children or older adults. It is safe, private, and comfortable. You can tour many beautiful, interesting parts of Spain, but then come home to cook and swim and enjoy each other in an amazingly beautiful setting.

We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. We had three generations (including a 4 year old and nearly 2 year old, parents and grandparents). Although there were only six of us, this villa would also be great for a big group - there is plenty of living space (inside and out) to accommodate everyone. The rooms were clean and smart, with plenty of useful equipment - not to mention loads of indoor and outdoor toys to amuse our children. They really enjoyed exploring outside and playing in the pool. The pool is stunning, as is the view from the villa over the valley below. Mike and Emma were very good hosts, welcoming us and making sure we had everything we needed. They also gave us some really useful suggestions about places to visit during our stay, their local knowledge was much appreciated. I would definitely recommend this for a holiday.

“Fantastic family holiday-better than we imagined!”
Our family of 17 (aged 3-80) spent a week here in August. Mike and Emma were very helpful before we arrived answering queries about rooms; access; steps etc. The directions to the place were easy to follow and the house was clean and welcoming.
The amazing pool was enjoyed by all of us – races; competitions; just enough space for relaxing on chairs in the shade and we didn't have to worry about making too much noise.
There were plenty of alternative activities to the pool. Our boys enjoyed the pool-table; t-tennis; train-set and extensive children's library. One of us could lounge in the hammocks whilst watching the 3yr old playing shops etc in the shade. The scooters were used a lot. Our OAPs found cool rooms and shady places in the midday heat.
We loved the stars; had no problem from mosquitoes; swam in the dark; had plenty of room to relax outside in the evenings.
Everyone was happy with their bedrooms and bathrooms. We had a bbq; 4 of us used the casita kitchen; 10 of us used the main one – it was spacious and had all the equipment we needed. The courtyard had ample space to eat in and chat in the shade. We loved the views; isolation; watching the swallows and goats. Got some exercise keeping the cats outside!
As Mike was in UK his friend Stefan was on hand to sort out anything and was kind enough to show us round Iznajar nearby. Some of went to Cordoba; some to a National Park; some to the shops; others to the goat farm.
It was a great holiday - thank you Mike and Emma!
