The Andalucia / Granada Province region

Andalusia is steeped in history no more so than Granada the capital. It is situated at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains a 35 minutes drive away. The Alhambra, a Moorish citadel and palace, is in Granada and is one of the most famous items of the Muslim, Jewish, and Christian historical legacy that has made Granada the most popular place to visit in Spain. The Alhambra is on an elevated site and overlooks the City of Granada.
A visit to the Alhambra will take a day to see properly, but you will not be disappointed. The memories of looking through the picture windows of the palace windows that capture the spectacular views of Granada, the outstanding architecture of the Moors and the carefully laid out gardens with water features will fill you with awe and beckon you to go back.
A 1hr and 20 minute drive north west of the villa lies Cordoba. During Roman times it had more cultural buildings than Rome and the remains can be around the city. In 711 it was conquered by the Moors and their influence is still evident in the City. None more so than the famous Mezquita mosque. After the Christian conquest in 1236 a cathedral was built in the middle of the complex because they found the structure to beautiful to tear down and now there is two sacred sites in one.
The Alcazar and its beautiful gardens with water features is also worth a visit. A Stroll through the cobbled streets with its many restaurants shops and bars can be difficult as you are spoiled for choice as to where to eat or drink. You may find yourself going back for more.
The Granada / Puerto Lope area
There are three picturesque towns nearby. Moclin is a picturesque whitewashed village, a seven minute drive away from the villa. It has am impressive 14th century Moorish castle which is lit up at night and can be seen very clearly from the road on the way back from Alcala La Real. Of great interest in close proximity to the village are many traces of prehistoric man in the form of cave paintings and noelithic stone formations. There are breathtaking views towards the Sierra Nevada mountains.
Montefrio is approx 12kms east of Montesol. It's worth stopping to savour its splendour as you approach it from Montesol. The village enjoys one of the regions most striking settings, with two of its churches built on the top of two hilltops of bare rock surrounded by a whitewashed town. Park on the outskirts and stroll through the cobbled streets into the heart of the town.
Alcala La Real is a 15minute drive away. In the centre of the town there is a wide pedestrianised boulevard which is the focal point of the town. This is where the locals meet during their evening 'paseos'. There are many shops, bars, restaurants
Skiing is popular between the end of November and beginnining of April with the Sierra Nevada ski slopes only 50minute drive from the villa. It's possible to ski in the morning and sunbathe on one of the beaches of the |Costa Tropical in the afternoon. If there are young members in your party there are two creches available in the resort of Pradollano.
Granada, once the capital of Moorish civilisation, renowned for its flamenco traditions and for the elegant Alhambra, stages spectacular Holy Week festivities every year.
The spectacle of the solemn Semana Santa processions, marked by mesmerising drum beats and punctuated by saetas (traditional devotional songs), provides a constant reminder of the Christian, Pagan and Middle Eastern heritage that makes up this unique land.
Processions take place throughout the city from Palm Sunday right through to Holy Saturday, the highlight, without a doubt, being Maundy Thursday with the Procession of Silence. A large part of the Granada attends the procession, which departs from the Church of San Pedro on the Carrera del Darrosees.
Many come to witness the images of the pasos (litters) of Christ and the Virgin, bedecked with scores of jewels and semi-precious stones. These litters occasionally draw to a halt to re-enact the Stations of the Cross. There is no pageant as such and references to the passion are marked by saetas. These scenes often whip up such a frenzy of emotion that many onlookers are brought to tears.
Unique to Holy Week in Spain is the Wednesday procession, renowned for the paso "Christ of the Gypsies" or "Christ of Sacromonte" - Sacromonte is an area of Granada famous for its Gypsy cave dwellings. Last but not least is the Procession of Las Angustias on Saturday of Holy Week.
In short, a visit to the city during Holy Week allows you a glimpse into the alluring inner soul of Spain. It is highly recommended. Please consult the local press and internet for the times and locations of the different processions.
The first Saturday of May there is a festival in Montesol at the bottom of the valley. On this day a huge Paella is cooked and the local community get together to let there hair down.

We had a fantastic time here with our 4 month old son and the owners provided a travel cot for us too. All kitchen utensils and cooking devices were there and a large fridge freezer whilst there was lots of space upstairs and on the balconies. The pool warmed up in no time as well! We were only 2.5kms from the local village with a few bars and good little shop with fresh meat/deli whilst we could drive to Alcala La Real in 30 minutes and Granada in the same. Only 1.5 hours from the airport in Malaga as well. Great place to stay - thanks once again. |
Guestbook for CasaTranquilo
We had a fantastic holiday, as there was so much to do and see. We were also so impressed with the villa, pool, and the size of the upper terrace. It was so lovely sitting there in the evening with a glass of wine looking over the valley of olive trees. Looking forward to returning with friends. Mike and Patricia
The villa was better than expected and our boys loved swimming in the pool. The view from the pool over the valley was surreal. The Tapas at your local bar were excellent washed down with the best Rioja we have tasted and such a good price. We will be returning soon. John Sue and family
The villa is in such a good position for sight seeing and getting a feeling of rural Spain. I fell in love with Granada and it's friendly people. Thanks for your tip of getting the taxi up to San Nicolas on Sacromonte hill, as the view over the Alhambra was breathtaking. We also found the most fantastic restaurant in Granada near the old bullring. The accommodation was better than anticipated with such a fantastic terrace and pool.
Thanks for a lovely holiday. Dave and Alison
