Beautiful Albayzin apartment
About the home
A 3 bedroom executive apartment set on the first floor of beautifully restored 16th century carmen. The apartment is in a peaceful location in the oldest and most attractive district of Granada known as the Albaycin. It is in the lowest part of the Albaycin and so is very convenient for the town centre. It is only 5 minutes walk to Plaza Nueva and just a couple of minutes away from countless shops, tapas bars and restaurants. Buses and taxis regularly leave Plaza Nueva for the nearby Alhambra Palace (20 minutes walk). The apartment itself has been lovingly restored in 2007 using traditional materials and styles popular in local architecture. Features include traditional slate and clay tiles, exposed wooded beams, stylish Nazari pine doors and shutters, and tasteful Moorish style furnishings throughout. Despite its traditional feel the apartment still boasts the best in modern amenities including powerful reverse cycle air-conditioning and heating, flat screen TV, DVD, digitalbox, fully equipped kitchen (dishwasher, washing machine, fridge freezer, oven). It is a much loved holiday home for ourselves and our young children and as such has been fitted out to a high standard and very suitable for young families (with a highchair and cot available).

There are traditional wooden shutters throughout which block out the light completely for a very sound nights sleep or can be flung open on a sunny day. Thick walls and tiles serve to keep the apartment cool on a hot day but there is also reverse cycle air-conditioning for your comfort (which can heat as well as cool the apartment). There is an attractive shared internal courtyard. Two of the three bedrooms have private balconies which face onto a quiet street and are not overlooked. The third bedroom has double doors opening to give views of the central courtyard and sky above. The stylish bathroom is fully tiled with local Nazari tiles and equiped with marble washbasin, walk-in shower, wc and bidet.

Enquire nowThe Andalucia / Granada Province region
Granada is one of the few regions of Spain where free tapas is still served with your drinks.
There is a strong Moorish influence in Andalucia and Granada, from the time that the Moors ruled in Spain. This translates to some unique and interesting architecture such as in the Alhambra palace, and many riad -style houses (carmens) built around central courtyards. Our apartment is in a converted 16th century carmen built around such a courtyard and is set in the most historic district of Granada city, the Albayzin.
There is a nearby ski resort with the stunning Sierra Nevada just 45 minute drive away, accessible by bus or taxi. You can ski on up to eight different pistes while enjoying views of the Mediterranean sea. On a clear day it is possible to see as far as the coast of North Africa.
There are also 2 18 hole golf courses within 30 minutes drive (city of Granada and Santa Clara golf clubs). Other activities include walking, cycling and horse riding in the mountains. The surrounding coutryside is very scenic and well worth exploring.
The Granada / Albaicin area
Granada is a bustling University city which is very popular with visitors from around Spain aswell as from the rest of the world.
Granada was first settled by native tribes in the prehistoric period, and was known as Ilbyr. When the Romans colonised southern Spain, they built their own city here and called it Illibris. The Arabs, invading the peninsula in the 8th century, gave it its current name of Granada. It was the last Muslim city to fall to the Christians in 1492, at the hands of Queen Isabel of Castile.
The Albayzin is the most historic and enchanting area of Granada. It is a Unesco world heritage site where development is strictly controlled to maintain the charm of the area. It is a fascinating labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets and whitewashed houses with secluded inner gardens known as carmens. It is set upon a gentle hill facing the Alhambra palace. Our apartment was created within a 16th century carmen which was lovingly restored in 2007. The Plaza de San Nicolas, a short walk up from our apartment, is famous for its magnificent view of the Moorish Alhambra palace.
The Alhambra palace is a must see for any visitor to Granada. It is one of the architectural jewels of Western Europe. It consists of a series of palaces and gardens built under the Nazari Dynasty in the 14th C. This mighty compound of buildings stands at the foot of Spain’s highest mountain range, the Sierra Nevada, and overlooks the city below and the fertile plain of Granada.
There is also a splendid cathedral (5 minutes from the apartment), bull ring and many lovely Plazas and parks.
The owners can recommend some lovely places to eat and drink in Granada or you can enjoy exploring on your own. Either way we are sure you will find some wonderful tapas and dining experiences here. Seafood and cured hams are local specialities but a wide range of delicacies is available. If you prefer to cook at home the nearest supermarket to buy food is El Corte Ingles, about 10 minutes walk from the apartment. Or you can visit Mercadona or Hipercor slightly further from the apartment.
Granada is also rich with shopping experiences ranging from clothing and shoes to art and souvenirs. There are very colourful bazaars nearby in the lower Albayzin which sell Morrocan wares including clothes, bags, lamps, jewellery, shoes and furniture. There are a number of arabic cafes amongst them where you can drink exotic teas and eat fabulous pancakes aswell as more traditional North African cuisine.
There are a number of festivals and cultural events in Granada. The most colourful and popular is the Semana Santa (holy week) processions around the Easter period. Thre are also theatres and cinemas nearby and even a couple of charming little flamenco and music bars within a few hundred yards of the apartment. Despite the proximity of all these attractions the apartment itself is very peaceful, set back in a small pedestrianised street.

| Airport: | Granada Jaen: 20 km |
| Railway: | Granada railway station: 2 km |
The best way to travel around Granada is on foot or by bus and taxi. The nearest taxi rank from the apartment is in Plaza Nueva, 5 minutes walk from the apartment. Buses also leave from the nearby Cathedral for the city, central bus station and airport. You can also take a taxi to Monastario santa Isabella la Real which is just 2 minutes wlak from the apartment and easiest when you are arriving with luggage (as it is an easy downhill walk from the monastario to the apartment).
The nearest airport is Granada Jaen which is 30 minutes by taxi or 45 minutes by bus. A taxi to Plaza Nueva should cost 25 Euros. The reliable airport bus will take you from Granada airport to the Cathedral for 3 Euros. Malaga airport is 90 minutes by taxi. Alternatively there is a regular bus from Malaga central bus station to granada central bus station.
Driving is less convenient and there is little parking in the city centre except in multi-storey subterranean pay and display carparks. The Albaycin itself is largely inaccessible by car due to its narrow streets and parking restrictions. The nearest car park is 5-10 minutes on foot. The owners can advise you on car parks if you do decide to bring your car to granada. We will provide a detailed map and directions to guide you from the Cathedral bus stop or Plaza Nueva to the apartment (5 minutes walk).

Stayed here with 2 other couples but it is also prefect for a romantic weekend away. In fact loved it so much that this is the second time I have rented this apartment - first time was with my partner. Loved that the apartment is in a traditional old building across the river from the Alhambra, up cobbled streets in the romantic whitewashed old part of Granada. There is Moorish style decor and furniture throughout in keeping with the buildiing. Walking distance to all the tapas bars and to the Alhambra. Great place to spend a few days, there's lots to see and do in Granada as well as great food! This apartment wouldn' t be suitable for those with limited mobility / heavy prams/ buggies due flight of (traditional old picturesque!) wooden stairs to get up to the front door. But this is a really lovely place to stay if you are interested in staying in and seeing historical Granada or for a break away with friends to sample the tapas bars. ps. although no wifi in the apartment cafe 4 gatos just around the corner has free wifi. |

My husband and I stayed here with our two teenager children and were very happy with the accommodations. The piso was clean, spacious, and well equipped. Having spent time in Granada before, it is without question one of the best locations to explore the entire city, especially the Albaycin and Alhambra. We would stay here again! |

Really enjoyed our stay in this charming apartment, we have stayed twice before. It is very nicely furnished and well equipped . Loved sitting on the balconies on sunny mornings. The apartmentis right in the heart of the Albayzin and cafes. Town is easy to walk to. The owners gave us two maps and lots of recommendations of nice places to eat. Could even get fresh bread in the street nearby and a good grocery store around the corner. The Alhambra is close by. Looking forward to our next stay here. Response: So pleased to hear that you enjoyed your holiday in our apartment. We very much look forward to you staying again. As returning guests we will be happy to offer you a good discount! |
