The Fuerteventura region
Fuerteventura is the second largest of the Canary Islands. It is a 2 hour drive from Corralejo at the north eastern tip to Morro Jable in the South but just a 30 minute drive across the island from east to west.
It has the best beaches of any of the Canaries – miles and miles of beautiful white sand. In particular the Las Dunas National Park, starting on the edge of Corralejo and stretching 7 miles south and the Jandia beaches in the far south.
Although Fuerteventura is, quite rightly, known for its beaches there is much more to the island, and many things to do.
The landscape has a timeless quality, with large open plains, dramatic barren lavascapes with smooth volcanic peaks and valleys dotted with the occasional oasis of palm trees. There are many tiny hamlets of little whitewashed houses to explore throughout the island.
Gran Tarajal area
Gran Tarajal is the second most populated town in Fuerteventura next to the capital, Puerto Del Rosario.
Due to its geographic location and commercial port, the town is the central area for importing and exporting goods, particularly for the southern part of the island. The most popular local products for import and export are fish, cheese and agricultural produce.
This town was once a famous gateway for numerous visitors going to Fuerteventura . Historically, it was used by the missionaries, bishops and Barbary pirates who asked the locals help in disembarking.
Gran Tarajal has a black-sand beach complemented by a very striking seafront promenade with several Spanish bars and restuarants over-looking the beach. Because of the old quay, the seas in Gran Tarajal are very calm - perfect for a paddle or a swim to cool off in the hot Canarian sun.
The Gran Tarajal streets follow the shape of the land. The key feature of the town is the volcano that rises up to make an amazing backdrop to Gran Tarajal town.
This unassuming town preserves a far more authentic Canarian ambiance than the other Fuertaventura towns.
Gran Tarajal has many shops including 2 supermarkets, a pharmacy, several clothes, shoes and bags shops. The shops (excluding the supermarkets) are usually closed between 2 and 4.30 in the afternoon for siesta.
There are several restaurants in the town which offer mainly Italian or Spanish cuisine. We'd definitely recommend taking advantage of the fresh seafood and fish available. There are also several beachside cafes which are ideal for relaxing outside in the afternoon with an ice cold beer.
How to get there
Flights are available direct to Fuerteventura from many of the UKs airports. The main airlines are EasyJet, Monarch, Thomas Cook, First Choice and Iberia. EasyJet flights direct to Fuerteventura will commence in early November 2009 from Stanstead and Liverpool. Monarch flights from Gatwick, Luton, Birmingham and Manchester commence on 21st October 2009.
Gran Tarajal is a 30 minute drive from the airport. There is a taxi rank outside the airport and there are also buses between the airport and Gran Tarajal. There are plaenty of car hire companies located within the airport or that organise a "meet and greet" service at the airport with transfer to the car hire depot (which is usually a cheaper option). Orlando (can also be found through CarHire3000) and AutoReisen usually offer the best rates.
