Windy Ridge
About the home
A truly wonderful holiday home, Windy Ridge is a luxury property nestled in the village of Oxwich Green. Windy Ridge is very popular all year round with ramblers and young families alike. When you are not lounging next to Windy Ridge's heated pool the renowned Gower coastal path is on your doorstep winding its way between the string of beautiful bays which make Gower such an idyllic place to visit. The house provides unique walking access to both Oxwich Bay and Slade Bay. The house is on the footpath to Slade Bay, a sandy beach that cannot be reached by car and remains a perfect escape for those seeking beauty and tranquillity. Oxwich Bay is more lively with it's hotel bar and restaurant overlooking the water and a kiosk selling ice cream near the beach; but none of this detracts from its breath taking scenery, which has won numerous awards.
Even at the height of the summer Oxwich Green remains peaceful as access is restricted to walkers only. The farm adjacent to Windy Ridge also provides much entertainment for Windy Ridge's younger visitors who can follow the footpath to duck ponds and the sheep and cows grazing close by. The heated outdoor swimming pool is very popular with the grown ups and children. The house itself has been very tastefully furnished, with lots of thoughtful touches and home comforts. The spacious beamed living room has an open fire with a large stone fireplace, seagrass floor, stone walls, antique furniture and paintings. The beautiful farmhouse style kitchen with traditional Rayburn, luxurious marble counter tops and a conservatory dining area is great for entertaining. The ground floor also has a bunk bedroom with vaulted ceiling and seagrass floor. There is a utility area and downstaris WC.
To the first floor there are two doubles, one twin and one single bedroom. The beamed double bedrooms have kingsized beds and are furnished beautifully with seagrass floor and period features. The twin bedroom has wooden floors, vanity unity and has been decorated with a nautical theme. The pretty single bedroom has seagrass floor and vanity unit. There is a bathroom with roll-top bath and basin and a separate shower room with basin and WC.
Family days out can be enjoyed exploring the many sandy beaches in the area, with fabulous sand dunes, secret coves and dramatic cliff tops walks. There are many places of historical interest to explore, with two castles in Oxwich itself. The local nature reserve is packed with bird and plant life. Many of the beaches are prized by surfers and Oxwich Bay is sheltered and calm, making it perfect for windsurfing and Kite boarding. With a surf school, horse riding, pony trekking, fishing, golfing, archery, the list goes on, all close by, how will you fit it all in. The bustling village of Mumbles is twenty minutes drive away with its, boutiques, art galleries, cafés and restaurants, and further afield Swansea town centre has extensive shopping, nightlife, cinema, bowling, a leisure centre and indoor market which is a foodies delight.
NB: unfenced pool in the grounds.

The South Wales / Swansea/Bridgend/Neath region
Swansea has the usual range of amenities of a large city, shops, cinemas, bars, museums, galleries, theatres and restaurants.Wind Street is the bar and night club centre. More uniquely it has the National Waterfront Museum just down from the newly re-furbished Leisure Centre and adventure water park for all ages. A short walk away from these is the the Dylan Thomas Centre celebrating the turbulent life and work of the beery bard.
A short drive away there are several Norman castles, the National Wetland centre, National Botanical Gardens, Dan-yr Ogof show caves, and Brecon Beacons National Park. A little further afield are Tenby Laugharne and St. Davids.
The Gower / Oxwich area
Oxwich is a small pretty village with a shop, a hotel and a church on the edge of the beach. The hotel has a restaurant which is open to the public. There is a large beer garden and a children's play area is provided. It is open all through the day and evening. There is a good view of the beach from the garden. Many weddings are held in the grounds of the hotel because of the beautiful location. The main road into Oxwich leads through the woods and out across the salt marshes and the nature reserve. At the end of this road is a large car park designated for the beach. The beach itself is at the western end of a glorious three mile expanse of golden sand. It is very accessible and you can stay near to the hotel and shops and watch the boats being launched from the slip way. There are water sports available at the Oxwich Bay Beach Club such as dinghy sailing and windsurfing. Ten minutes walk east along the sand and you are surrounded by dunes with salt marshes and woods behind. So much to explore; so much plant and animal life to see. At the far end of the beach is the Great Tor which is a spectacular vertical limestone cliff. Heading west from the car park you follow a path through woods skirting the bay. You come across St Illtyd’s church, lost in the trees with its ancient graveyard. Continue over the headland called Oxwich Point, and there is Slade. Yet another beautiful bay which is much quieter due to the absence of parking. The minimal development at Oxwich does not detract from the magnificence and tranquility of the bay. You will not be disappointed.

The house is decorated with style, the kitchen is big and well equipped, there are puzzles and games for children, the conservatory gives sky - and sun if you're lucky. What more could anyone want. The only caveats are that the pool is obviously not useable in winter and the beds in a child's double room are not comfortable for adults, otherwise all is charming and comfortable. The path to the beach is a bonus. |
