The Limousin region
The Limousin offers a refreshing alternative to lazy beach / hotel holiday. With so much to see and do each department has its own identity and charm. Renowned for its arts and crafts, medieval towns and castles it deserves to be recognised for more than just its beef cattle. This area of France enjoys distinct seasons of weather with warm summers and cold but sunny winters. Spring gives way to a reliable period of sunshine through to the end of September and into October when Autumn arrives turning the countryside into a blaze of copper and amber. Winter is signalled by the exodus of thousands of cranes migrating south to escape the cold months ahead. Crisp, frosty mornings, temperatures well below freezing and snow are regular features which enhance the beauty of the whole of this unpoilt region of France.
The Creuse itself is one of the least populated areas with more cattle than people. Under developed and non commercial it has retained a distinct 'old fashioned' charm. Here life is much slower and the locals seem to have managed to retain the true values of country life and community. The landscape is one of green fields, rolling hills, lakes and streams linking to the river from which the area takes its name. The woodlands provide shelter and refuge for an abundance of wildlife including wild boar and deer which are still hunted by the locals during the season. Often referred to as the 'lake district' of France it has become a holiday destination for the stressed Parisiens and those wishing to escape the 'rat race'of modern day living. Walking boots and wellies tend to replace designer labels and the local children are more likely to be fishing, horseriding,or driving a tractor than playing computor games. Entertainment is more outdoorsy with lots of activities available.Lakeside restuarants with outdoor live bands and dancing (see www.lanaute.com) Tree adventure parks with zip lines, velotrain carts on old railway lines, mountain bike trails, canooing, clay pigeon shooting to mention just a few. For those less energetic there are many local festivals, brocantes and markets to enjoy throughout the year. Montlucon and Gueret are available 20 minutes away to satisfy those requiring a bit of retail therapy or indoor entertainment. Montlucon has nightclubs, a bowling alley, laserquest and indoor swimming pool with slides, a sauna, hammam and gym. The medieval quarter has an abundance of smart restuarants and designer shops. Gueret has a reserve where wolves can be observed roaming in a their natural habitat. It also has a huge maze and forrest activity park to explore. At the end of the summer it hosts the superb Foret Follies festival (see www.foretfollies.com)

"A great place to chill"
A beautiful well equipped studio apartment of high standard. Trevor and Paula have thought of everything. Lovely quiet country roads, ideal if you're into cycling as we are. Welcomed on our arrival with a cup of tea and cake and supplied with fresh eggs and home made jam throughout our stay. The place to be if you want a 'get away from it all' holiday.

"A bit of Paradise"
Beautifully appointed gite in an unspoilt part of France, which doesn't seem to be given the consideration it deserves. Quiet roads and villages mean stress free travel and it's impossible not to relax. The gite's owners were great hosts and their advice on the surrounding area was invaluable. Sitting on the patio at night the silence was deafening - a rare occurrence in this modern world. Only five minutes from the village of Gouzon, with an excellent supermarket and within easy reach of major towns and cities. If like us you are a fan of the great French mime Jacques Tati a visit to the nearby village of Sainte-Severe sur-Indre is a must. It's where they filmed Jour de Fete
