The Midi-Pyrenees region

The location offers something for everyone, whether you want to relax and unwind, or see some local attractions and history of the area. The atmousphere and amazing scenery will certainly help you to relax into the holiday mood. Everyone who stays here comments on the amount of sleep they get, as it is so quiet and relaxing. The attractions are too many to list on one page but there are water parks, golf courses and horse riding facilities nearby. The place is surrounded by local history, castles and weekly events during the summer months (such as a crêpe festival!)

Whether you are looking for a relaxing time to unwind away from the hustle and bustle, or want a bit more excitement like canoeing down the Dordogne, there is something for everyone within easy reach of Masclat. The village of Masclat is located between 3 major towns - Gourdon, Sarlat and Souillac. We are perfectly situated for visiting popular tourist locations within the Lot and Dordogne regions, such as the medieval town of Sarlat, with its twice weekly market, art galleries, exhibitions, cathedral and colourful street life.

The Lot has various towns such as Cahors, which is well worth a visit and well known for the wine that it produces. The Parc Naturel Régional des Causses du Quercy provides plenty of information on the Lot area. You may wish to visit the Water Park at Souillac for a dip in the pool and slide down the flumes and you should try to fit in time to visit the spectacular medieval village of Rocamadour, dramatically sited on a steep rock face - perhaps sample some Rocamadour goats cheese!

If you are interested in local history, you may like to visit the Château Fenelon or Château de Castelnau-Bretenoux. Alternatively you can travel through beautiful countryside and visit some of the most important prehistoric sites in France, the famous cave paintings of Lascaux or visit the spectacular caves in the surrounding area, such as the Gouffre de Padirac, Font-de-Gaume, Les Combarelles and the Grand Roc ... and this is only a sample of the things to do!!

"Clean, well maintained house with unobtrusive hosts"

La Nougayrede is a clean, well maintained house in a quiet rural location. The house is adjacent to the host's own house with it's own entrance. During our stay the covered verandah/porch of the owners' house was allocated for our sole use including lounge chairs and picnic table and chairs. Although their windows looked on to the porch, they kept their blinds lowered to maintain some semblance of privacy for all.

The four bedrooms were comfortable and the bathroom clean. A second bathroom or at least a separate toilet would be preferable. Just one bathroom for 6 people isn't really enough.

The kitchen was large and clean, with sufficient cooking utensils.

The garden area is not separately fenced. The outside area is very open and is more of a typical farm-yard set up with large open shed. The reason for mentioning the outdoor area is that I travelled with a 3 year old and a one year old. With small children a secure, fenced garden would be better. Also, a separate fenced area would make the outdoor space feel more 'yours' rather than shared with the owners. Although the owners were very unobtrusive (they walked as far away from the guest house entrance and patio area as they could), sometimes it felt like we were lounging around in somebody else's front garden and thus a bit awkward.

The owners were a lovely, English couple who were happy to engage in conversation but were not pushy or overbearing. They happily offered a few supplies after we arrived late on a Sunday (this is rural France and there is absolutely NOTHING open where you can buy bread or milk on a Sunday afternoon - be sure to stock up in a larger village on your way to the accommodation).
