Cottage | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
Our cottage is a charming little detached stone cottage nestling in a peaceful rural hamlet in the quiet rolling countryside of the Passais area of France which is on the borders of Basse Normandy and Pays de la Loire. La Coulonge is a lovely two-storey home full of character. The cottage was originally a farm workers house built in the late 1800's where they shared the house with their pigs and cattle to keep warm. It has been sympathetically converted to retain character and charm.
The cottage comprises of a good size lounge with seating for 4 persons, a new ground floor suite comprising of a double bedroom with double patio doors leading out to the secluded rear patio area and a luxury en-suite bathroom featuring a roll top 'slipper' bath and double shower.
The kitchen/diner leads to a private garden and parking area. As part of our expansion work we now have a new utility room with laundry facilities and large fridge/freezer.
Upstairs there is a spacious double bedroom with an additional mezzanine twin bedded room ideal for families with children. There is also an adjoining bathroom with shower, wc and washbasin.
La Coulonge provides perfect accommodation for up to four adults, plus 2 children.
The cottage has many of the original oak beams, local tiles and a granite fireplace with the original bread oven. La Coulonge is a perfect location for either a couple, or four, or a family with children who just want a quiet holiday or short romantic weekend away.
The cottage faces onto a large gravel driveway which is shared with two other cottages. It is perfect for a tranquil and peaceful base for your holiday, with just the sound of cows and the occasional tractor to remind you of where you are.The cottage garden receives plenty of sun during summer where you can dine or sit outside to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the area. The ground floor comprises of the lounge that has retained its original fireplace with bread oven and a wood burner.
The lounge floor is tiled and there is comfortable seating for up to four people. The lounge also has Satelitte TV with integrated DVD player and a iPod music system for use by guests. From the lounge there is an archway which leads through to the kitchen and dining area which also has a tiled floor. The light oak fitted units in the kitchen are well equipped with a range of labour saving devices.
A door from the kitchen opens onto a private garden with bar-b-que area. The cottage is situated in a very quiet hamlet which is approx 5 minutes drive (or 30 mins walk) from the villages of Le Pays or Cousmes Vauce (we are in between) which have shops to buy your fresh bread and croissants. The cottage is well located near many attractive towns including Domfront, Gorron, Bagnoles D'orne, La Ferte Mace, Flers and Mayenne.
The cottage is charming and romantic. La Coulonge is located in a quiet rural position within a designated area of outstanding natural beauty yet is still only 60 mins to the sea and lovely sandy beaches.
The historic D-day landing beaches, the Bayeaux tapestry, and the bars and restaurants of the lovely east coast of Normandy are all within easy reach as is the famous Le Mans 24hr Racing circuit. There is also a fast train route to Paris if needed.
All bedding, bedlinen, tea towels and bathroom towels (for use in the accommodation only) are provided and changed for each booking. There is also a travel cot if required. There are electric radiators in each room.
Due to the cottage location we would recommend that a car is essential. Cleaning materials in both kitchen and bathroom would be supplied. There will be a small welcome pack available on arrival which will contain some items to help you settle in.
Please note that our rates are in £'s Sterling and we accept payment in Sterling so you know exactly how much your costs will be. So you don't have to worry about Sterling/Euro Exchange rates.

The Loire Valley region
We are yards away from the border of the Loire Valley (Pays de la Loire) and Lower Normandy (Masse) giving you the ideal opportunity to explore both of these beautiful areas of France.
The Pays De La Loire region of France is a largely rural farming area, which is also rich in history, with many fine chateaux in the area. The regional town of Mayenne is only 17kms away and has many places of interest. There are a range of activities to keep you busy during your stay including golf, fishing, cycling, swimming and kayaking. For the less keen there are many peaceful walks, many along abandoned railway lines, ensuring a safe and rewarding route.
Although we have two villages ( Le Pas and Couesmes Vauce) within walking distance (30 mins) of the cottage both only have convenience shops and bars of course. Our closest main town is the lovely French town of Gorron (15 mins by car) which has all the normal shops, banks and supermarkets.
Normandy is a fertile region, renown for good food: pre-salted pork, seafood (including oysters, muscles & prawns), cheese, cider, pommeau and calvados.
Activities in the area include, cycling, walking, swimming and fishing and there are leisure parks, natural lake beaches and a vélorail close by. Gorron and Ambrières les Vallées have some useful shops, supermarkets and restaurants.
In Gorron, there is a cinema which shows an English film once a month and there is a weekly market on Wednesdays. We are located only 20 minutes from the attractive regional town of Mayenne on the river Mayenne, where you can walk around the ancient chateau, its gardens and museum.
We are also less than 1.5 hours from Rennes, with Caen, St Malo and Mont St Michel being only around 2 hours away, so nice and close to the ferries and giving you plenty of choice for excursions. We have many chateaux in our area and are also close to the borders of Lower Normandy and the Orne with many pretty towns and places to visit.
There are many other historical places of interest around the area, and to name a few:
Domfront (17 Miles) - The medieval town is perched on a hill at 215 meters above sea level. This gives the town with its half-timbered houses and cobbled streets a panoramic view of the Lower Normandy bocages of which Domfront is the capital. Market day is Friday.
Lassay-les-Chateau(16 miles) - Has a fine Chateau with an enjoyable and informative guided tour.
Bagnoles-de-l'Orne (26 Miles) - Is an attractive thermal spa town, with lake, golf course, casino and many restaurants and gift shops. The town also has a Golf Course and is surrounded by 7,000 hectares of forest. There is also a Lake, Sports Complex, Casino, parkland and superb views. Visit the castle were William The Conquerer was born.
St Fraimbault (9 miles) - Is an award winning flower village, with lake and pedaloes, crazy golf, lakeside walks, bar and a very good restaurant. In August the village hosts one of the best fetes in the region, with exhibitions, stalls and parades and is a must to visit.
Ambrieres-les-Vallees (9 Miles) - For the more energetic, the leisure park is well worth visiting. On the banks of the River Mayenne, the park has an outside swimming pool, kayaking, fishing, motor boats, tennis courts, play and picnic areas.
Le Mont St Michel (44 Miles) - Slightly further afield, but considered by many to be the wonder of the Western World, a must see and the second most popular tourist attraction after Paris.
Souce (10 Miles) - Has a beautiful lake and country walk area. Boats are allowed on the lake. There is also an outdoor swimming pool in the park area.
Flers (50 Miles) - Is a larger commercial centre with a new swimming complex, chateau, and markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Flers also provides a mainline station to Paris. For veterans and others interested in World War II, from Flers the Contre-Attaque route follows sites of historical interest in the battle for Normandy.
Paris - Why not book a TGV train to Paris, just 1½ hours from nearby Laval, making this an ideal day trip.
Falaise - Is famous for its medieval fortress where William the Conqueror was born in 1027.. William later became Duke of Normandy and King of England. The restored castle is open to visitors every day. You can walk round the ramparts and see the beautiful view of the surrounding countryside.
Le Mans (55 miles) - Visit the famous 24hr race track or the Cathédrale St. Julien which is generally acknowledged to be one of France's finest, and biggest religious buildings of its kind. The oldest parts of the cathedral, dedicated to St. Julien, date from the 11th century.
Villedieu-les-Poêles - Known as the city of copper and craftsmanship and is famous for bell-making and copper pots and pans (sought after by chefs all over the world). Copper, pewter and brass production date back to the Middle Ages and to the crusades in which Henry 1st of England/Duke of Normandy (the son of William the Conqueror) participated. The metalworking workshops are open to the public and there are various other museums that can be visited.

"A beautiful, peaceful home-from-home"
While great care and attention has gone into the tasteful conversion of this old farm building, that is not all that makes this a wonderful place to stay - the owners have tried to think of everything their guests might need, including a welcome pack containing bread and wine (just what you need after a long journey!)
The property is rather remote, but this means that you really can get away from it all: we spent several sunny evening on the private, secluded patio, playing card games, chatting and generally chilling out.
I would definitely recommend this idyllic property to anyone.

"Beautiful Cottage in Lovely Surroundings"
We stayed in La Coulonge for only one week but we could have easily stayed for much longer. Upon arrival to the cottage we knew it was going to be special and it did not disappoint. The standard of the cottage is superb throughout and it is such a warm, cosy and comfortable place to stay. The owners did everything they could to make sure that La Coulonge is a great place to stay for everyone. We were welcomed with a lovely hamper of some red wine, cheese, bread and butter to get us started. Adding to this there is a folder with extensive information about the cottage itself, the surrounding areas, what to do and lots more. The neighbours opposite were also very friendly and gave us some of their own chicken's eggs to get us going.
There are plenty of local towns with fresh bakeries, butchers, restaurants and supermarkets. The region of Normandy is very pretty and exactly what we were after. From the cottage you can easily reach many places worth visiting for days out by car. Or if you prefer, the cottage is nice enough in itself just to kick back, relax and enjoy a peaceful holiday.
Would recommend highly to anybody who fancies a lovely holiday for a great price.

"A thoroughly relaxing getaway - the cottage and setting were perfect, we didn't want to leave!!"
We visited La Coulonge in December and were seeking somewhere that we could relax in the run up to christmas - we were certainly not disappointed! The directions were excellent, and although the cottage was set away from any main roads we found it easily. The welcome was unexpected but most appreciated - we did not have the foresight to bring some goodies for when we arrived so the welcome hamper was just the ticket, a really thoughtful extra! The property itself was really warm and cosy and felt like home from home, being decorated and maintained to an extremely high standard. The surrounding area was were very picturesque, and we were fortunate to have a few sunny days to sit out in the garden area and enjoy it - we can't wait to return in the summer and take full advantage! All in all everything we had hoped for and more - a beautiful clean home from home in a very pretty setting, although close enough to amenities not to feel isolated. The friendly neighbours and welcome hamper from the owners were the icing on the cake for a perfect break, we are already checking dates for this year!!

"Lovely holiday home"
We had a wonderful stay at your cottage, which was thoroughly relaxing and just what we needed. The cottage itself was easy to find, as clear directions given to us from the owners prior to our journey, and in lovely surroundings, very peaceful. We had everything that we needed, it was comfortable and clean on our arrival, and the welcome basket of wine, croissants, butter and milk were a very nice touch and appreciated. The cottage was very spacious, the new extension was lovely and we felt quite at home. We were lucky enough to have some really good weather while we were there, which also made our holiday more special, and the outside space is great to relax in, with regular visits from the chickens. A really good place for a family holiday, and we would not hesitate to visit again, would highly recommend to others. Thanks again.
