About this location
The Cornwall region
Cornwall is located at the far tip of the West Country and its natural beauty makes it a wonderful holiday location where you choose whether you want a relaxing, laid back break or to enjoy the thrills of surfing, kayaking, cycling, walking and much more. It boasts an amazing coastline with great beaches, long and sandy on the north coast and smaller coves on the south coast, set within rugged cliffs, rolling moorland and winding country roads. There are quaint harbours and villages to explore where local produce ,fresh fish and meat grace the tables of the many pubs and restaurants. There is so much to see and do: the world famous Eden Project, many heritage sites and tremendous gardens and always a friendly welcome.
Gorran Haven has two beaches which merge into one at low tide. It is particularly safe for swimmers and is popular with families. It is dog friendly. Vault is a quieter beach which can be accessed with a short walk around the cliff or a little further on is beautiful Hemmick Beach. There is easy launching for boats on trailers from the beach. The adjoining harbour has summer moorings available and trailers can be parked in the village car park for a reasonable fee. There are fantastic coast path walks and other hidden trails to explore.
Kayaks and deckchairs can be hired on the beach. It is a safe swimming , sandy beach, loved by families and couples. Gorran Haven has a thriving village shop which is also the bakery and Post Office plus an open air cafe. During the day refreshments, snacks and meals can be obtained from here or one of the various small cafes in the summer: the beach cafe:The Mermaid; The Coast Path Cafe run by volunteers; Haven Fish and Chip shop plus Harbours Reach Cafe. A short walk brings you to the Llawnroc Hotel with bar meals and restaurant, and for a good pint and a meal The Barley Sheaf pub is 1 mile away in Gorran Churchtown.
Information about Gorran Haven and what's on can be found on the village website http://www.gorranhaven.org.uk.
The surrounding area
The historic fishing village of Mevagissey is 10 minutes by car and has a wide choice of restaurants, cafes and pubs. During the summer, a ferry service to Fowey operates (the Daphne Du Maurier festival is held here annually in May) along with hire boats or boat trips around the bay or for fishing. It has a fascinating museum, a model railway, aquarium and a harbour wall well suited to fishing and crabbing. Mevagissey Feast Week is usually the last week in June.
Further along is the historic port of Charlestown where it is possible to book trips out on the splendid tall ships throughThe Square Sail Shipyard Ltd.
To the west is the lovely Roseland Peninsula with its pretty coves and villages, Caerhayes Castle and St. Mawes, which is a short ferry ride from Falmouth. In the other direction the Lost Gardens of Heligan are about 10 minutes drive away and a further 15 minutes takes you into St. Austell, and the world famous Eden Project. The National Trust gardens of Lanhydrock, Trelissick and Trerice (www.gardensincornwall.co.uk) are all within easy reach, plus there are many other wonderful gardens open to the public and our central position is ideal for exploring the rest of Cornwall.
For shoppers, Truro, with its lovely cathedral, is the small county city with a good selection of shops. Near St Austell, there is a weekend covered market on a permanent site, lots of car boot sales around and on the road to Liskeard is Trago Mills, a department store like no other, situated in the woods.

Thank you for the lovely review and I agree about the hill - not for the faint hearted! It was a pleasure to meet you all and we hope to see you again even if its in the village if you rent a cottage again. Hope you enjoyed the whitebait and washing them thoroughly before freezing meant they were not too gritty.
