In Gorran Haven, right on the beach, a quirky, 17th cent., Grade II listed, end-of-terrace cottage, seemingly bigger on the inside than out. Once the local inn where (so local legend says) drunken customers were rolled out on to the beach to sober up! Now a great beach house, comfortably furnished and fantastically positioned for pub, shops, coastal path and, of course, beach.

Five high steps up from tiny lane to front door; hall (for coats/boots) with tiled floor and shower-room (suite). At this level, two twin bedrooms with wood floors (rugs), one with boiler cupboard (cosy); very narrow, steep, open metal spiral staircase (stairgate at top) down to attractive open-plan living/dining/smart fitted kitchen with microwave, butler sink, woodburner, TV/DVD, beams and window at ground level looking straight to the beach; large utility room/second kitchen with dishwasher, washing machine, tumble drier, fridge-freezer, sink; beyond, 2 steps up to games room (table tennis, table football). Second spiral staircase (stairgates) from hall straight up into large double bedroom with two children's z-beds, exposed roof beams, cane armchairs, TV, great beach/sea views and en suite bathroom (suite with roll-top bath plus hand-shower). Loading and unloading outside, car park (extra) 150 yards, reasonably level walk. A good family house, but not suitable for anyone with mobility problems.

The West Country region

Cornwall's 'Med': here is Cornwall at its warmest, most sheltered; of creeks and tidal waters penetrating deep inland, deep in woods, silent except for birdsong; of wonderful gardens growing things that live nowhere else outdoors in England (marvellous in rhododendron, camellia, magnolia time, from March to end of May especially); of sailing boats everywhere decorating the sea; of harbour villages where the light is Mediterranean - dazzling in the sunshine. And really very little that is ugly has been allowed to be built.

Here is Truro, Cornwall's (small) capital, with its 20th century cathedral; Falmouth, resort town and cargo/cruise ship/yacht port, superbly sited; and the glorious Helford River. Trewithen, Trelissick, Glendurgan, Trebah, Heligan (Lost Gardens of) and Caerhays are among the finest gardens. In the very middle of Cornwall, Lanhydrock house is very special, so is its garden. Not the greatest area for beaches, but good sandy ones near Veryan and Portscatho, in St Mawes, and around Falmouth and the Helford River's mouth. Not to be missed is St Just-in-Roseland's churchyard; nor - within easy reach - is The Eden Project (see South Cornwall).

Gorran Haven

Gorran Haven: unspoilt, pretty fishing village (pub, restaurant, PO/shop) on a hillside around the harbour. Mevagissey (large village), 2 miles. Sandy beach in the harbour; others more secluded within 1½ miles; St Mawes, 10 miles; Truro (Cornwall's capital), 15; nearest town: St Austell, 10. Lost Gardens of Heligan, 5 miles. The Eden Project, about 12 miles.
