S27 - Smugglers House
Cottage | 3 bedrooms | sleeps 6
A pretty, whitewashed, Grade II listed, 16th cent. semi-detached cob/stone cottage in the heart of Gorran Haven, 50 yards from the beach and 100 yards from the pub, in a donkey-width brick and cobblestone lane. Originally it was an inn, reputed to be the hub of smuggler activity, with a secret tunnel for hiding contraband. Stunning coastal path walks via Chapel Point to Portmellon and Mevagissey (about 3-4 miles), or south round Dodman Point and beyond. At the back, you have most of a large cobbled courtyard and flower-filled stepped garden with terrace (table/chairs, hammock, barbecue) and views.Inside, smart, modern and surprisingly spacious. Front door (5'6” lintel) from lane into width-of-cottage living room with lovely oak floor, stone inglenook (woodburner), leather sofas, TV/DVD and white-painted panel and beamed ceiling; 3 steps up (mind head) to fitted kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, pantry with fridge-freezer) with dining table/chairs, iPod dock and oak floor; back door to courtyard and external door (low lintel) to annexe (washing machine) with twin bedroom and snug (TV) and stairs to shower-room (suite) - ideal for teenagers. Back in the living room, stairs up to a generous-sized double bedroom (5' bed) with chaise longue and en suite shower-room (suite); few more stairs up immediately into a splendid double bedroom (6' bed) with lovely exposed high apex beams and en suite shower-room (suite). A gem of a cottage. Permit for car park, 130 yards.

The West Country region
Cornwall's 'Med': here is Cornwall at its warmest, most sheltered; of creeks and tidal waters penetrating deep inland, deep in woods, silent except for birdsong; of wonderful gardens growing things that live nowhere else outdoors in England (marvellous in rhododendron, camellia, magnolia time, from March to end of May especially); of sailing boats everywhere decorating the sea; of harbour villages where the light is Mediterranean - dazzling in the sunshine. And really very little that is ugly has been allowed to be built.
Here is Truro, Cornwall's (small) capital, with its 20th century cathedral; Falmouth, resort town and cargo/cruise ship/yacht port, superbly sited; and the glorious Helford River. Trewithen, Trelissick, Glendurgan, Trebah, Heligan (Lost Gardens of) and Caerhays are among the finest gardens. In the very middle of Cornwall, Lanhydrock house is very special, so is its garden. Not the greatest area for beaches, but good sandy ones near Veryan and Portscatho, in St Mawes, and around Falmouth and the Helford River's mouth. Not to be missed is St Just-in-Roseland's churchyard; nor - within easy reach - is The Eden Project (see South Cornwall).
Gorran Haven: unspoilt, pretty fishing village (pub, restaurant, PO/shop) on a hillside around the harbour. Mevagissey (large village), 2 miles. Sandy beach in the harbour; others more secluded within 1½ miles; St Mawes, 10 miles; Truro (Cornwall's capital), 15; nearest town: St Austell, 10. Lost Gardens of Heligan, 5 miles. The Eden Project, about 12 miles.
