The Western Cape region
The Western Cape is a province in the south west of South Africa. The capital is Cape Town. Western Cape Province is bordered on the north by the Northern Cape Province, on the east by the Eastern Cape Province, on the south by the Indian Ocean, and on the west by the Atlantic Ocean. The capital is Cape Town and other major cities include Stellenbosch, Worcester, Paarl, and George. The Garden Route and the Overberg are popular coastal tourism areas. The drive from the flat to Stellenbosch takes about 25 minutes.
The Western Cape is exceptionally topographically diverse. Coastal areas range from sandy between capes, to rocky to steep and mountainous in places. The Western Cape is also the southernmost region of the African continent with Cape Agulhas as its southernmost point, only 3800km from the Antarctic coastline.
The total land area is 129,370 km², about 10.6% of the country’s total. It is roughly the size of England or the US state of Louisiana.
Vegetation is also extremely diverse, with one of the world's seven floral kingdoms almost exclusively endemic to the province, namely the Cape Floral Kingdom, most of which is covered by Fynbos (Afrikaans: Fine Bush). It is extremely rich in species diversity, with more plant species occurring on Table Mountain than the entire United Kingdom.
Climate The Western Cape is also diverse climatologically, with many distinct micro- and macroclimates created by the varied topography and the influence of both the Indian (warm water) and Atlantic (cold water) oceans, thus climatic statistics can vary wildly over very short distances. Most of the province is considered to have a Mediterranean climate with cool, wet winters and warm, dry summers. The interior Karoo has a semi-arid climate with cold, frosty winters and hot summers with occasional thunderstorms. The Garden Route and the Overberg on the south coast have a maritime climate with cool, moist winters and mild, moist summers. Mossel Bay in the Garden Route is considered to have the second mildest climate worldwide after Hawaii.
Thunderstorms are generally rare in the province, except in the Karoo interior, with most precipitation being of a frontal or orographic nature. Extremes of heat and cold are common inland, but rare near the coast. Snow is a common winter occurrence on the higher lying ground, however frost is relatively rare in coastal areas and many of the heavily cultivated valleys.
Gordon's Bay area
A pictureque coastal town at the sundrenched foot of the Hottentots Holland Mountain Range, and this Mediterranean-style village is situated only 30 minutes from Cape Town International Airport. Gordon's Bay is a picturesque coastal village, nestled at the foot of the Hot- tentots Holland Mountains and the False Bay Coast.
This serene resort is ideally situated for a relaxing seaside holiday within forty minutes' drive to the bright lights of Cape Town and thirty minutes' to the main airport.
The climate is typical of coastal resorts, with a winter rainfall and mild sea and air temperature throughout the year. The south easter or ``Cape Doctor" affords welcome relief from the heat in summer.
Wine Routes and Others A lazy morning's drive will take you to the world renowned wine routes of Stellenbosch and Franschoek and a short distance further to Paarl and Wellington which is famous for its dried fruit and wines.
Ten minutes from Gordon's Bay is the Helderberg Wine Route and brewey and across Sir Lowry's Pass the fruit route at Elgin and Grabouw. The village is on the scenic coastal route to Hermanus and the whale route, and during September/ October whales can be seen frolicking in False Bay.
Attractions, Places of Interest Gordon's Bay is famous for its safe bathing, with both Main and Bikini Beaches attracting thousands of happy sunworshippers.
Fishing from the rocks and the old harbour wall is a popular pastime with locals and visitors alike, sharing yarns about "the big one that got away". Pleasure trips on luxury yachts and cruisers are available from the two harbours while Steenbras Dam is sought after as a picnic spot.
Arts & Crafts Visitors can browse around the curio and gift shops dotted along the beach front for unusual crafts.
Sporting Events Boat, rock and surf angling, tennis, rugby, jukskei, bowls, squash and croquet keep the sportsmen busy, while the radio control club - off road, enjoys an enthusiastic following. Yachting, deep-sea diving and angling ensures that Gordon's Bay is a sportsmans ideal holiday destination.
Walks and Trails * Take a leisurely walk above the village on the Danie Miller trail. * Explore the historic cannon and wagon wheel walk at Sir Lowry's Pass. * Enjoy the sound of running water and a dip in Chrystal Pools up Steenbras Valley.
Restaurants Restaurants offer a wide choice of culinery delights with the emphasis on seafood. A number of restaurants can be found in and around the two harbours, with most enjoying sea vistas. Take- away outlets are popular and cater for all tastes, from pizzas to hamburgers to hot fish and chips - delightful!
Shopping Malls A charming mini-mall, curio and bric-a-brac shops in Beach Road, a supermarket, filling station and pharmacies adequately provide for the needs of visitors, while Somerset Mall is a mere fifteen minut drive away.
Linked Interest Between Towns Gordon's Bay is six minutes' drive away from the Strand and ten minutes to Somerset West. The village is an important link with the rest of the Winelands in that it is one of two coastal resorts which forms part of this special region.
The village is easily accessible for a lazy day spent on the golden beaches, a trip to Steenbras Dam for a picnic under tall pines and to visit the wine, fuit and whale routes.
