The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Vaucluse region
Gordes is amongst one of the most beautiful villages in France. Gordes with its narrow cobbled streets and its XIth century castle firmly planted in the heart of the town. The castke hosts the Town Hall and Pol Mara Museum.
While in Gordes, you must visit the Bories village, with its curious igloo-shaped structures made of stones, the Sénanque Abbey, the Bouillons oil press and the cellars of St Firmin's s Palace, as well as Mont Ventoux, Colorado de Rustrel, Oppède le Vieux and the Luberon national park, just to name a few.
Saumane de Vaucluse is a typical peaceful Provencal hill top village with narrow streets, fountains, typical, beautiful stone-built houses facing the Lubéron, situated between Isle sur la Sorgue and Fontaine de Vaucluse, dominating the valley of the river Sorgue and offering magnificent views over the plains with pine and olive trees and mediterranean aromas. There are remains of the former ramparts as well as the keep from the ancient "castrum Salmana" which dates back to the 12th century. Right at the top of the village there is a dominating fortress 15th century castle which in former times once belonged to the uncle of the Marquis de Sade and is still privately owned. Don't leave Saumane without visiting "La Crémade", the small archeology Museum and the santon-maker next door who makes the superb figures for provencal nativity scenes.
Visit the Isle sur la Sorgue which is set amongst canals, a small Venice in the South and the place for artists and poets attracted by the richness of its cultural heritage. A stronghold of antique sellers, the Isle sur la Sorgue draws in art lovers, collectors and tourists from all over the world searching for incomparable decorative or second hand objects of art.
The Gordes area
There are many many other famous local villages including Menebres, Bonnieux and Gordes - please ask for any extra local information.
Fontaine de Vaucluse, a bustling village with loads of cafes and the amazing "source" a spring - the largest in France with the papermill a great visit to a wonderful village.
The Ochre Trail in Roussillon and the Provençal Colorado
In Rustrel: Come and discover the geological phenomenon of the ochre sands. Here you can walk through the multi-colored sands along a trail with explanatory signs which discuss the formation and mining of the ochre sands.
In Roussillon the Conservatory of Ochres and Applied Pigments welcomes your visit.
Here you will discover sites of amazing natural beauty, the result of the combined work made by man and by nature. During the 19th and 20th centuries, Rustrel was the scene of thriving iron industry, then a thriving ochre industry. Since the ochre quarries stopped, the natural balance is fragile. An enchantingly colourful outing! They travel along public paths but also cross over private lands. The paths are marked with yellow, blue or red markings.
There is a food market every Tuesday.
Many art galleries and art shops to wonder in and you can take part in cultural events, such as theatre, concerts and festivals. If hiking is your cup of tea, there are plenty to do in and around Gordes.
The region is really good for cycling and Isle sur la Sorgue has many antique fairs and shops.
