About this location

The Rethymnon Prefecture region

Crete is one of the most popular islands in Greece and it attracts thousands of visitors every year. The reasons of this success lay to its wonderful geography : beautiful mountainous landscapes, long sandy beaches surrounded by crystal waters, beautiful towns and villages, picturesque harbors, high quality food, the amazing ruins of one of the greatest ancient civilization...

The climate of Crete is one of the nicest, Europe. Winters are mild and wet. Snowfall is rare in the field, but quite common in mountainous areas. Rainfall is rare during the summer season. The rainy season starts in late October and lasts until March-April.

The Prefecture of Rethymno is the heart of the island of Crete and is one of the most beautiful places in Greece. Rethymno awaits you with clear blue seas and Mount Psiloritis, there are traces of a civilisation that dates back 4,500 years, numerous Byzantine churches and monasteries, enchanting Venetian monuments, the most well-preserved Renaissance city in Greece, with endless beaches, caves, gorges and unique flora and fauna.People live here amidst nature and emotions, outside the code of behavior found in big cities. No matter where you go, be it even to the most isolated village, our people will open their doors to you to treat you to a "tsikoudia" and befriend you. SIGHTS First and foremost ,the area is known for its outstanding natura beauty, including the following attractions : Gorges:

Frantzeskiana Metochia - Prines - Gerani - Gerani Cave. Situated 12km from Rethymnon, this beautiful gorge runs seaward from Frantzeskiana Metochia to Gerani by way of Prines (Vederi), a total distance of 7km. Since there is no path, the route is only recommended for experienced walkers.

Palailimnos - Saitoures

Mountros Caves: Gerani cave

Historical Tradition & Architecture

All of the municipality's settlements are steeped in history and contain fine examples of architecture, featuring stone buildings with vaulted entrances (known as "diavatika") and magnificent thresholds. This alone is reason enough for a visit to the Municipality of Nikiforos Fokas
