The South East England region

Sussex is in the south east of England stretching along the English Channel from Rye in the east to Chichester Harbour and Emsworth in the west with many fine blue flag beaches in between.

The chalk downland of the South Downs National Park cover a large part of Sussex from where they meet the sea at Beachy Head in East Sussex through to the Hampshire border near South Harting in the west.

Chichester is the cathedral city of Sussex and Brighton and Hove on the Sussex coast is considered to be one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Europe. Arundel and Lewes are two historic towns within the county both have imposing castles and are popular towns to visit.

The climate enjoyed in Sussex is above the average for Great Britain, which makes it ideal for visiting throughout the year.

Golden Cross

Situated four miles north of Hailsham and six from Lewes the cottage is ideally placed for visiting much in East Sussex.

Lewes is the county town of East Sussex. Its castle overlooks the town and is open to visitors, as is the Barbican Museum opposite. In such an historic town there is much to see. Lewes is famous for its bonfire celebrations and each year these are attended by thousands of visitors. Visiting on the first Saturday of the month is recommended when a thriving Farmers' Market takes place with lots of delicious fare on offer.

Glyndebourne the world famous and world class opera house is three miles east from Lewes and less than five miles from Honeysuckle Cottage. Glyndebourne restarted and reinvigorated country house opera in England and today it offers unique presentations in the Sussex countryside attracting world leading performers. We provide a link to Glyndebourne from under our ‘What’s On’ heading should you want more information.

The Pevensey Levels just south east of Hailsham are a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Fertile wetland meadows stretch south eastwards to the sea at Pevensey Bay. The Levels will offer many relaxing hours exploring footpaths and bridleways with every opportunity to enjoy the bird and wildlife in this lovely area.

The Levels are bordered by the South Downs that meet the sea at Eastbourne. The chalk cliffs at Beachy Head mark the start of the South Downs Way, a national trail running through the heart of the new South Downs National Park on its route to Winchester 100 miles to the west. Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters Country Park next door are spectacular areas of coastline and are within a thirty minute drive of Golden Cross.

The chalk cliffs at Beachy Head offer wonderful views across Eastbourne. It is an idyllic seaside resort offering three miles of promenade that seamlessly merge with the Downs, a historic Victorian pier and a relaxing ambience that encourages the visitor to want to return. The seafront is guaranteed to enrich any visit.

Also nearby is the Bentley Wildfowl and Motor Museum at Halland, Herstmonceux Castle and Herstmonceux Science and Observatory Centre just to the east of Hailsham. All three feature within our Places to Visit section on the website.
