About this location

The Isle of Wight region

The Isle of Wight is a perfect holiday destination, combining picturesque downland and coastal scenery, a multitude of activities and attractions for adults and children alike, and attractive towns and villages. The Isle of Wight is also one of the UK's sunniest destinations. With warmer than average temperatures all year round. To see the evidence, visit Ventnor botanic gardens which has many Mediterranean and sub tropical plants happily growing

There is a huge diversity on the island ranging from the chalk cliffs and the needles in the west, to the rolling countryside of the interior, to water meadows and marshlands. All around the 60 mile coastline, are hidden coves, sandy beaches and dramatic cliffs, all waiting to be explored. Nearly half of the Island is a designated area of outstanding beauty. Plum Tree Cottage is within one such area. There are a number of nature reserves on the island, which is home to Red Squirrels as well as rare birds and butterflies.

There is history in abundance as well, from prehistoric fossils to Medieval Carisbrooke Castle, and Queen Victoria's residence at Osborne. The island also boasts many excellent eating out places, from pubs to award winning restaurants.

The island pace of life is noticeably less frenetic than on the mainland, and perfect for relaxation.

Plum Tree Cottage is located down a narrow lane about 1 mile from the village of Godshill, with its famous church, model village, and picturesque thatched cottages. The cottage is set at the foot of Appledurcombe Down, with a large network of footpaths leading up and around the downs.

Godshill has 3 pubs, with everything on offer from gourmeet dining at The Taverners to the Griffin Inn with its large family garden and maze. There is also the famous church on the hill which gives Godshill its name, and the model village. Godshill is a very popular attraction in its own right.

To the south are the villages of Whitwell and Niton, and to the South and East the seaside resorts of Ventnor and Shanklin, both with sandy beaches and all the beachfront facilities. There are some fabulous stretches of coastline within a short distance, for example Luccombe and St Lawrence. Many smaller beaches in the area provide more seclusion for those who prefer a quieter beach. Family visitor attractions such as Robin Hill adventure park and Blackgang Chine are also a short distance away.
