The Somerset region
The Somerset Levels, stretching from the foot of the Mendip Hills to the north are a favourite with holiday visitors. The countryside is ideal for cycling (bring your own bikes) comprising many lanes and roads used to separate the fields.
Just over 1 mile away is the Westhay National Nature Reserve. Ideal for twitchers.
Visitors flock to England's smallest city, Wells (6 miles) and its near neighbour Glastonbury (4 miles), home of many King Arthur legends. Wells has a magnificent cathedral and moated Bishop's Palace, home to the Bishop of Bath and Wells. Glastonbury has the remains of its Abbey, ruined by Henry VIII and once one of the longest buildings in England. The grounds are open to the public and you can trace the outline of the walls that are no longer there. The ones that do remain give an idea of the scale of the building.
Modern Wells has many tourist shops and Glastonbury has become a New Age paradise.
Nearby is Street, home to the Clarks Shopping Village, one of the original outlet centres and usually crowded with visitors.
Further afield lie Cheddar (10 miles), with its gorge; Wookey Hole (6 miles) and Ebor Gorge. Here you can go underground in the caves cut into the Mendip Hills by rivers.
Godney is a small village, surrounded by farmland where livestock graze. Often children's first experience of farm animals.
The Sheppey Inn (300 metres) has a growing reputation for it's food. Booking is essential. Also a range of local beers and ciders.
Across the moor, in the village of Mudgley is the award winning Wilkins Cider Farm. Always worth a visit for a tasting. Cider is available by the gallon and they also sell local Cheddar Cheese and other consumables
Wells has a Farmer's Market on Wednesday and Saturday. Glastonbury on Tuesday.
Musical events are held in Wells Cathedral and Glastonbury Abbey.
Millfield School is just 6 miles away. Rivendell is an ideal base for Parent's Day both here at for The Cathedral School, Wells.
