The Turkish Aegean Coast region
" Take a blind man to Lycia, and he'll immediately know from the smell of the air exactly where he is. The acrid perfume of lavender the pungent fragrance of wild mint and thyme, will tell him."
(Cevat Sakir known as the 'Fisherman of Halicarnassus')
The Turquoise coast is also known as the 'Turkish Riviera'; home to two of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. (Temple of Artemis at Ephesus, and the Mausoleum of Maussollo at Halicarnassus).
The coastal region is a paradise with its Turquoise waters, lush green forrests, secluded coves and bays,
The area is the setting for Homer's Odyssey. Alexander the Great conquered it, It is said that Cleopatra bathed whilst Icarus fell to his death there, having flown too close to the sun. St Paul toured, Hadrian traded and St Nicholas (Santa Claus) was born in the region (Demre).
In the 5th Century BC ,Herodotus the world's oldest historian, wrote that if the Gods ever vacated heaven in favour of earth, they would settle on the Turquoise Coast.
Butterfly Valley (Kelebek Vadisi) is about 6km from Oludeniz and can be reached by boat from there or from Fethiye.. It is a quiet area and rare butterflies such as the Jersey Tiger can be spotted there between June & September. There is also a large beach and waterfall for those who want to relax in the Canyon which is surrounded by 350metre high mountains. Butterfly Valley makes for a great day trip.
Fethiye hosts a huge market every Tuesday and is a bustling historical town with ancient ruins, wonderful waterside cafes and marinas.
High up in the mountains not far from the ancient ruins of Tlos there's the 'Yakapark' Trout Farm and Restaurant where you can choose your own trout and have it grilled for you as you sit in the shade of the trees, dabbling your feet in the ice cold waters that flow all around you. Just a few miles from Tlos is the fabulous Saklikent Gorge.
Hisaronu, with its vibrant nightlife, and Oludeniz are within easy driving distance.
Gocek, the jewel in the crown of the Turqouise Coast, is situated at the deepest point in the gulf of Fethiye and from the foot of pine covered mountains, it looks out over the 12 islands of the bay
Göcek started to be known by a group of artists and poets and some fisherman from Bodrum who cruised along the Turquoise Coast. The route they took later became known as the “ Blue Voyage. The 'Blue Voyage' includes visits to famous ancient cities, harbours, tombs, secluded coves, quiet beaches and lush green pine forests along its shoreline.
Gocek is an important yachting resort both within Turkey and the world, boasting no less than four marinas and is referred to as the "Turkish Cannes." Gocek hosts two world renowned Regattas in May and November each year which attracts thousands of yachtsmen from all over the world. Yachts and gulets can be hired from the marinas. It is not uncommon to find local as well as international celebrities relaxing in Gocek.
It is a peaceful and charming village with an environment that is protected. Sunday is MARKET DAY.
During the high & mid season, there are day trips to the islands from Gocek harbour and from Fethiye where you can swim in the turquoise waters of its many tranquil bays . The bays and coves are described as a hidden paradise.
“Cleopatra Bay” is a large bay full of pine trees and known for its ruins in the sea. According to myth, during one of Cleopatra's visits she was so impressed with the area that she requested that a Roman Bath be built.
The group of islands called “Yassica Islands” are well-known for its sandy beaches. You'll discover tones of blue from the sea and green from the pine and olive trees when your tour boat anchors in the shallow waters close to one of the islands. You should try one of the hand-made pancakes which are made here in the traditional way.
“Gobun bay” has crystal clear waters and the calm of a lake. Here you can find a small cafe-restaurant which is run by a local family.
“Gocek Island” is the closest island to Gocek and can be reached in only 15 minutes. From next to the “Marina Office” in Gocek a watertaxi-service is available daily, on an hourly basis. At “Gocek Island” sunloungers are provided. There is also a restaurant. You can even bring your tent and camp in the forest.
At “Boynuzbuku Bay” swimming in the chain of inlets is an experience of a different kind. This bay is covered in Sweet-Gum-trees, which only grow in the region from Koycegiz to Fethiye. Facilities have been built to supply fresh water and restaurant services.
From here “Kile Bay” and its pebbly beach can be reached by car.
Gocek's most famous bay is “Bedri Rahmi (Taskaya) Bay”. It is named after the poet Rahmi Eyupoglu who painted a fish on a rock behind a fountain in 1973 and who was one of the first blue voyagers. Behind the painting a Lycian rock tomb is hidden. This bay also is a popular stop for locals. During the high season the restaurant is very busy.
Another beautiful bay is Sarsalla bay. Its pine-surrounded landscape and long beach make it perfect to swim and kayak. Sarsala is only 12 km away from Dalaman. Going there by car will take about 20 minutes. The views on the way are very impressive. However, the small Sarsala bay (Küçük Sarsala) can only be reached by boat. It doesn't have a beach, but a wharf was built in order to stop and swim. The restaurant has high quality standards and is open until late hours.
The nearest option to Gocek is INLICE BEACH (800 metres long) which can be reached within a 10 minute drive out of Göcek (5km) .Also the main island beach is reachable by water taxi from the harbour.
KATRANCI , a picnic site under dense Pine Trees opening into a delightful bay is popular with both swimmers and campers (16km).(see photo section)
Other beaches are easily accessible by car or taxi. Amongst these is SARIGERME which is a long sandy beach.(20mins from Gocek).
Beyond Sarigerme is the fabulous protected beach of IZTUZU (known as TURTLE BEACH) in the Dalyan Delta.
In the opposite direction the famous BLUE LAGOON beach at Oludeniz is about 45 minutes drive away.
CALIS BEACH , which stretches for 5km, is a 30minute drive from Gocek and 5km from Fethiye .
Gocek Village is WELL PLACED FOR EXPLORING historical and cultural sites such as:
XANTHOS, PATARA, KAUNOS, DALYAN, KAYAKOY,SAKLIKENT, MYRA, TELMESSOS, KALKAN & KAS to name but a few.
