The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
If you like your holidays hot and sunny then the Turkish resort of Gocek is the perfect choice. Gocek is sheltered by pine-covered mountains, creating the ideal natural suntrap. During the summer months the sun beats down on this Mediterranean jewel for around 12 hours per day. The weather in Gocek stays stable for the seven summer months and you can expect long, hot days with temperatures hitting over 30C in June, July and August. Winters in Gocek are short and mild, and because of this, the region has become very popular with holiday-makers looking for the ideal winter sunshine break.
East of Göcek Gemiler Island (Gemile) / Gemiler Adası The remains of a Byzantine church, a chapel and some civil buildings dating from the years 5-11 AD, may be seen on the island, which can be reached by boat from Ölüdeniz or Gemiler Bay. It is considered important as one of the earliest places to which Christianity spread. Blue voyages generally anchor at the island known as St. Nicolas. It is 45 km from Göcek.
Ören-Araxa / Ören Founded on the ancient Xanthos river, 75 km from Göcek, this extraordinary water source is referred to in mythological accounts. Today, some remains of the Araxa city walls, a hamam and a Byzantine aqueduct may be seen within the boundaries of Ören village.
Tlos / Yaka Köyü Tlos lies in 80 km distance from Göcek. It was one of the 6 major cities of the Lycian Federation and was the Federation’s sports centre. It is known as the place where the mythological hero Bellerophon lived, with his winged horse Pegasus. Archaeological excavations have established that Tlos was the oldest settlement in the Lycian region, founded earlier than 2000 BC. The necropolis is built on the natural rock of the acropolis and features the most beautiful tombs of the house type to be found in Lycia. The royal tomb, dated BC, is known to have been dedicated to Bellerophon.
Letoon / Bozoluk-Kınık Letoon is 90 km from Göcek and was the religious centre of Lycia. It is famous for 3 tombs dedicated to the goddesses Leto and Artemis and the god Apollon. Archaeological excavations that have been continuing since 1962 have also brought to light churches from the early Christian period.
Pinara / Minare Köyü Pinara lies on the foothills of Akdağ, 55 km from Fethiye and was one of the largest cities in Lycia. It is known as the place where the first beauty contest was held and is considered important for its unusual architecture, in particular the temple dedicated to the goddess Aphrodite. The necropolis is unique in having hundreds of pigeon-hole type public tombs.
Cadianda / Üzümlü Cadianda is within the borders of Üzümlü, 90 km from Göcek, and is known for being the last town to join the Lycian Federation. Built with an unusual physical structure, it has suffered considerable damage by the forces of nature. The main focus of attraction in recent years has been the complex consisting of a theatre, agora, stadium and hamam, brought to light by excavations carried out by Fethiye Museum.
Kayaköy / Fethiye Kayaköy, 55 km from Göcek, is a settlement built by Greeks of Asia Minor in the 14th century on the ruins of ancient Karmillassos, of unknown foundation date, which had been destroyed by earthquakes with the exception of a few house-type tombs. Its former name was Levissi. The village is a source of pride in the region because of its tradition of coexistence with the 5 surrounding Turkish villages, in a spirit of friendship and brotherhood, offering an example of peace through humanity. Under the exchange of population agreement of 1922, the Greeks of Kayaköy were exchanged with Turks living in Western Thrace
Telmessos Antique Theatre / Fethiye Ancient sources refer to a great theatre at Telmessos. In 1993, during drilling excavations carried out by Fethiye Museum, seating from the theatre was discovered at a depth of 3-4 metres. Subsequent work continuing until 1995 revealed all the surviving remains of this theatre. Constructed in the early Roman era and restored in the 2nd century AD, it is known to have had a capacity of 5,000 people and to have been used as an arena in Byzantine times. A project for the restoration of the theatre, with its present seating capacity of 1,500, has been completed. It is 70 km away from Göcek.
Rock Tombs / Fethiye The 4th century BC Lycian rock tombs located inside the town of Fethiye, only 35 km from Göcek, attract much attention. These are tombs carved out of the natural rock and have become the symbol of the city. The most beautiful and impressive is that of Amintas, which may be reached by a long, regular stairway. It can be seen easily from below and its splendour becomes increasingly evident as one approaches. In the centre of the left-hand column is written, in the alphabet of the 4th century BC, ‘Amintas, son of Herpamias’. The exact identity of this person is not known. There are quite a few sarcophagi worth seeing in the region, the most important being the one belonging to the Lycian age. It rises out of the sea in a striking manner and has an arched, Gothic-style quadrangular cover on its two-storey façade, decorated to resemble wooden beams. Each side has frescoes depicting wars and these are thought to be illustrative of the life of the person to whom it belonged.
Ölüdeniz Described as “God’s gift of heaven on earth” Ölüdeniz lies within a 3 km long beach. The pleasures of swimming here, in the harmonious variations of light and dark blue and green colours, are inexhaustible. The water of this natural lagoon is warm and calm for 10 months of the year; it is a favourite with both local and foreign tourists. Ölüdeniz and Belcekız beach, separated by Kumburnu, are 60 km from Göcek. There are many pensions, camps, motels and restaurants in Belcekız, open throughout the year. The pristine sandy beach of Kıdrak, shaded by pine trees, lies 3 km from here.
Katrancı Bay / Katrancı Koyu Katrancı Bay is situated 18 km from Göcek on the Göcek-Fethiye road. The village is a vision of blue and green, shaded by pine trees extending as far as the shore, and has a relaxation area offering services such as showers, toilets, cabins, drinking water, buffet, and a car park. It is an ideal spot for camping.
Butterfly Valley / Kelebek Vadisi This fascinating canyon, 5-7 km from Ölüdeniz and 65 km from Göcek, surrounded by mountains of an average height of 350 m, takes its name from the butterflies to be seen here from July until September, among which is the Jersey Tiger. This paradise, with its small waterfalls flowing all year round, its pink-flowering oleanders, its wide beach, clear sea and sparkling pebbles, can be reached by boat from Ölüdeniz. The valley, which is a meeting point for travellers of the world, offers services such as camping facilities, a restaurant, a bar, a roof terrace, showers and cabins.
Islands / Göcek The region of the Kapıdağı peninsula, surrounded by countless beautiful bays and islands and known by fishermen as ‘the inside of darkness’, is one of the indispensable stops for those on blue voyages. Yassıca Islands, Hamam Bay, Kurşunlu Bay, Yavansu, Bedri Rahmi Bay, Tersane Island, Göbün Bay, Boynuzbükü, Göcek Island, Domuz Island, Zeytin Island and Kızıl Island, called ‘the 12 islands’, can be visited with daily boat trips from Fethiye and Göcek, and are an important attraction.
Saklıkent Saklıkent, or the hidden city, is a unique natural phenomenon concealed in a magnificent canyon beside the Karaçay River, which forms the boundary between Muğla and Antalya provinces, extending for 18 km and rising to heights of 600 m in places. It is 85 km from Göcek. This is a matchless tourism centre, with its vertical, precipitous rocks, pine trees and clear running spring waters offers outdoor sporting possibilities such as rock-climbing, trekking and swimming.
Yakapark Yakapark combines human endeavour and creativity with nature’s boundless opulence to provide an unequalled place of relaxation where unforgettable moments may be spent listening to the sounds of birds singing and water flowing. It may be reached by a 2 km road from Yaka village which is 70 km away from Göcek.
Günlük / Küçük Kargı This unusual village, located on the Muğla road 55 km from Göcek, has large numbers of sweet-smelling sweetgum trees (Liquidambar orientalis). The secretion from these trees is used in the treatment of many illnesses, such as itching, asthma, bronchitis, ulcers and stomach disorders, as well as by the perfume industry.
Hisarönü / Ovacık These two typical Turkish villages, only 50 km away from Göcek, in the region of Ölüdeniz have been realizing their touristic potential in recent years, offering a wide range of accommodation, shopping centres and entertainment possibilities. Located close to the popular attractions Ölüdeniz, Babadağ and Kaya Koy, they are particularly frequented by foreign tourists.
West of Göcek Sarıgerme Sarıgerme, known in antiquity as Psilis, with its 12 km long beach, is today being developed as a touristic centre. Sarıgerme is 38 km from Göcek and only 11 km from Dalaman airport. The golden sands are eminently suitable for water sports. Sarıgerme is situated 40 km from Göcek.
Dalyan The Dalyan delta is about 45 km from Göcek. This natural wonder reminds one of a labyrinth when passing through the reeds, with steep rocks rising alongside. The colourful long-beaked kingfisher is another of nature’s miracles. There are 180 different species of bird in the delta. Nearby places to visit, as well as the 3000 year old Royal tombs, include the antique city of Caunos and the village of Köyceğiz.
Iztuzu Beach / İztuzu Situated on the south of the Dalyan delta, with fresh water on one side and the Mediterranean on the other, this beach is a natural phenomenon that has received its second award as one of the beaches of the world preserving nature. With its extremely fine yellow sand and crystal clear water, it is the place where Caretta Caretta turtles leave their eggs, and was used a portal by the ancient people of Caunos. İstuzu Beach lies in 50 km distance from Göcek.
Caunos / Köyceğiz-Dalyan Caunos is an antique city founded by and named after one of the twin sons of Miletos, on the border between Lycia and Caria. In ancient times it was a port, but now lies inland. With its remains of a 3 km city wall, a stoa, an agora, a fountain, baths, a theatre and a temple, Caunos is one of the ancient cities with a full complement of edifices to be visited and it is only 50 km from Göcek.
Köyceğiz The lake and settlement of Köyceğiz, 60 km from Göcek, on the north side of the Dalyan delta, date back to 3400 BC. The first rulers were the Carians, followed by Scythians, Assurians, Ionians, Dorians, Achaeans, Persians, Hellenes, Seleucians, Romans, Seljuks, Menteşoğulları and the Ottomans. The ancient city of Caunos lies where the lake joins the Mediterranean. The major historic sites to be seen are the remains of an acropolis, the towers of Harab and Susan, and various temples.
Gocek area
Located in between the two port towns of Telmessos and Kaunos and known to the Lycians in ancient times as Kalimche, Göcek is where, according to legend, Icarus fell into the sea after flying too close to the sun. Göcek is a peaceful corner of the world; a place far removed from the hustle and bustle of modern western living. The natural surroundings are such that the government has listed Göcek among just 14 protected national heritage sites, thereby guaranteeing its unspoiled status for the foreseeable future.
Göcek’s four significant marinas represent the town’s main attraction and explain its reputation as a heaven for yachtsmen. Take a trip to the quay and you will find yachts moored alongside tiny fishing boats in the harbour, while people drink in the waterfront cafés or join one of the many world-renowned Blue Cruise voyages. Göcek town also warrants further discovery. The growing yachting industry has seen a rise in the number of jewellers, clothes stores and restaurants but Göcek has nonetheless retained its authentic coastal village feel with local markets and carpet sellers providing a charming throwback to antiquity. Local traditional market "pazar" on Sundays represents a real charm and rich variety of all produced and grow in the area.
How to get there
Göcek may be a world away from the stress of modern-day life but it takes less than four hours to reach from the UK. A direct flight from most major European cities will take you direct to Int. Dalaman Airport, which is just 25 km. from Göcek. Dalaman is also served by regular daily flights from Istanbul. In addition to Turkey's national carrier, Turkish Airlines, the private airlines like Pegasus, Atlas and Onur have several direct flights from Istanbul.
You may easily rent a car at the Dalaman Int. Airport.
