The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
The Turquoise Coast, also known as the Turkish Riviera, has beautiful scenery, coves and beaches, and a rich legacy of archeological sites and natural attractions. A dramatic, unspolit area with the Taurus Mountains high peaks (snow clad in winter), pine forests running straight down to the clear azure waters edge, was the location of ancient Lycia. Dating back as far as 1400 BC, through the Roman and Ottoman Empires, the whole area is steeped in the ancient ruins of impressive civilisations. Visits to Aspendous, Kaunos, Pinara, Xanthos, Patara (to name but a few places within easy reach) will reveal the history and culture of Lycia.
Fethiye, 20 km away, is the nearest medium sized, bustling market town and lively night-life. Along the coast are the famous beaches at Istuzu and Oludeniz, and inland the Saklikent Gorge with its rushing icy cold water from the 3,000m high Gombe Mountain.
Gocek is well known as a marina and yachting resort, holding regattas in May and November. Yachts and gulets can be hired from the marina, and in the high and mid season days trips available from the harbour when you are able to swim in the turquoise waters of the island bays.
Browse amongst the boutique shops and relax in one the many cafes and restaurants. The Sunday market in Gocek is a must - enjoy local pancakes (gozleme); stock up for the week with fresh vegetables, cheeses, olives, fruit and veg. Haggle over clothes, shoes and other leather goods.
