The Central England / Cotswolds / Cheltenham / Gloucester region
Gloucester is situated in "The Heart of England" under the magnificent Cotswold Hills. Drive just a short distance from the city and enter the surrounding countryside which lays claim to the largest designated area of outstanding natural beauty in England shaped by people for over 6000 years. It boasts honey-toned Cotswold villages; the regency town of Cheltenham Spa and its historic Georgian architecture (not forgetting it's world famous racecourse!); the nearby Forest of Dean and Wye Valley (and it's abundance of walks in idyllic surroundings) and much more. The Cotswolds is quite simply the English countryside at its best and is an area full of variety; beautiful landscapes, picturesque villages, historic manor houses and glorious gardens.
In the Middle Ages the Cotswolds were well known throughout Europe as the source of some of the best wool. The Cotswolds were ideal for sheep so the Abbeys and monasteries raised huge flocks of the 'Cotswold Lions'. Another defining Cotswold attribute is its Oolitic Limestone and there are still a good few quarry's in the region extracting and working the stone for repairs and the construction of new buildings. The old limestone houses and cottages are mainly 'Listed'.
The climate is mild and so the Cotswolds attracts visitors all year round. Spring and Autumn are especially popular.
Gloucester area
The City of Gloucester has a unique history from its Roman foundations to its Victorian docklands. Gloucester is a vibrant multicultural city that combines historic architecture with a unique blend of visitor attractions, festivals and entertainment, a collection of high street and specialist shops and a mouth watering array of tea shops, restaurants, wine bars and pubs offer food and drink for all tastes.
Just some of Gloucester's attractions include the magnificent Cathedral (which was a location in the Harry Potter films), the refurbished victorian docklands (with its bars, restaurants and antique centre), an array of nearby country parks and a fabulous collection of shops!
