La Fermette
About the home
Porz an Caz is a very small but charming hamlet and La Fermette is about half a mile down a quiet 'cul de sac' a mile and a half from the small town of Glomel with its' leisure lake/reservoir and man made beach. The cottage is placed well-back from a quiet lane and there is little traffic. It is set amidst the beautiful rolling countryside of central Brittany and right away from the usual tourist trails. Originally a small farmhouse, the cottage is built of solid stone under a slate roof. It is an ideal place to retreat from the world in your own cosy environment, but with the convenience of being only a short drive or cycle ride from local amenities. The cottage has been recently renovated and now provides all the comforts of a modern home but without losing it's charm.
The living room is comfortably furnished to a high standard. There is a Villager wood-burning stove. Wood is available from the barn opposite. There is a small charge for unlimited wood during the off season. During high season, although not strictly necessary, a full wheelbarrow of it is supplied. The barn also provides shade from the sun for your car in high summer. There is English satellite TV (Sky) with free to view channels, DVD player, video, cassette player, CD player and FM radio. If you have Sky TV yourselves then you may wish to bring your own card so that you can view a wider range of channels. The kitchen is well-equipped. There a free-standing electric cooker with oven and 4 rings, a fridge freezer, dishwasher and microwave. The washing machine is in a small utility area in the barn. Upstairs there are 2 bedrooms. One has both double and single beds enabling it to be used as a twin if needed and the other is a double en suite. There is electric heating in all rooms to supplement the wood burner for off season visits. Although this is a cottage on its own we can be contacted by telephone and with you very quickly if you needed.

The Brittany / Cotes-D'Armor region

This part of central Brittany is an area of outstanding natural beauty. The rolling countryside is reminiscent of Cornwall - but without the density of population or tourists. Wildlife abounds and we have seen in the space of a day buzzards, sparrow hawks, a pine marten and a fox (as well as hearing the resident owl). The cottage is on the 'route des menhirs' the huge ancient standing stones that circle Brittany and date from around the time of our own 'Stonehenge.'
Porz an Caz (translated from Breton to 'place of the cat') is a very quiet hamlet but within walking distance (or a very short drive for the less energetic) from the Nantes/Brest canal. This was built at the behest of Napoleon in order to transport across Brittany supplies to his troops without running the gauntlet of the British Fleet. The tow path has recently been renovated and it's use is encouraged for walking, cycling, fishing and horse-riding. Some of the locks have had shutes added for canoes. We particularly enjoy it in the autumn when there is an abundance of chestnuts from the trees that line much of the tow path. There are local horse trekking centres, an off road cycle track, BMX track and a canoe school where canoes can be hired. Cycles are available for hire locally. Seeing the local area by bicycle is a real possibility here with a wealth of country lanes and little motorised traffic. Indoor tennis courts are available in nearby Rostrenen.
The Lac de Gurerledan is a short drive away. This about the size of Windermere and has 2 good beaches and a wide range of water sports. You may book lunch on the floating restaurant that tours its' perimeter. Close by is the Abbaye de Bon Repos, which has been the subject of much recent renovation and provides a good insight into local history. It is the venue each summer during early August of a truly spectacular Son et Lumiere. Amongst other attractions is 'jousting,' medieval style.
The Lac de Glomel is only a couple of kilometres away and is a wonderful area for wildlife watchers. The local council has recently designated a small part of it a beach and imported sand accordingly. Bathing is 'non serveillance.' It is possible to rent a sailing dinghy or have sailing lessons. We have walked a large part of its' circumference, but have never been able to devote the time to go the whole way!
For those with an interest in fishing temporary permits can be obtained locally. There is good fishing to be had locally at the Lac de Glomel and along the Canal.
The north, south and west coast is a pleasant hours drive away. The climate is similar to that of the channel islands.
The Glomel area
Glomel is the nearest village. It is sufficient to meet all daily needs, there is a post office, small general stores, baker, 2 restaurants, chemist, hairdresser, church and bar. Usually there are 'fest noz' at Glomel and other nearby villages through the summer where everyone gets together for a meal, music and sometimes dancing. We shall be pleased to let you know about what is happening during your stay. The nearby (6 miles) market town of Rostrenen has 4 large supermarkets several good restaurants and everything else to meet your needs. Market day is Tuesday
