The County Kerry region
The cottage is a short 20min walk to the haven of a beach called Kells Bay, it is 4.5 miles from Rossbeigh which is a beautiful mile long beach. Rossbeigh has Horse Riding, Tennis & Basketball courts, children's play area & pubs/restaurants. Mountain and forest walks prevail in the area. Further along from Cahirciveen there is the Skelligs Chocolate Factory, Valentia Island Ferries, beautiful coastal walks and drives and a chance to see the Dinasaur footprints near the lighthouse. Cahirciveen has a marina, and further along Portmagee has a daily ferry service to the famous Skellig Island where the 7th century monks built Beehive Huts - a must for a day visit! On the boat trip you will pass the famous Puffin Colony - a bird sanctuary in the furthest southern seas! Cahirciveen has a 6th century Ring Fort immaculately preserved, and a must visit! The many wonderful fish and steak restaurants in the area make dining a gourmet treat as the atmosphere in these fishing ports have a traditionally relaxed Celtic charm. The famous Cahirciveen festival pays host to some great Traditional Irish musicians with local Artists and Crafts people displaying their wares. Glenbeigh plays host to the world famous Glenbeigh Races! Horse racing in the old fashioned way with all the locals taking part in the fun! Puck Fair is world famous for it's annual novel suspension and deification of a local prize goat -( I personally prefer not to see animals used like this:-( ) however it's tradition and draws loads of different characters and peoples from around the country! Funfairs, side shows abound here but driving/parking can be difficult. Great opportunities for photography of characters / Irish culture / market scenes!
It goes without saying that Co. Kerry has to be seen on any trip to Ireland. And Killarney with it's lakes, mountains and waterfalls is a short 40min drive from the cottage which is perfectly situated on the RING. A five minute drive brings you to Kells Bay fishing harbour/ beach and the starting point for some wonderful hill walks, ten inutes will bring you to Glenbeigh, a cosy town nestled at the base of Alpine type mountains, Rossbeigh beach, forest walks and recreational parks. Ten minutes driving will bring you (with careful directions!) to Coomsathairn Lake at the foothills of the Glenbeigh Horse shoe Mountain Range. Fifteen minutes will also bring you to Cahirciveen's Steige Fort and Renard Ferry - gateway to Valentia Island! Twenty to twenty five minutes - to Portmagee the harbour for boat trips to Skellig Island , the Puffin Colony and the bridge that leads to Bray Head - stunning vistas of the Irish coastline.Waterville is thirty minutes drive away and a short drive from there to Derrynane Bay! the most spectacular stretch of sandy/rocky beach on the Ring. On the other side Inch Bay is an hours drive from the cottage west on the Dingle peninsula and a further fifteen minutes from here will bring you to the famous fishing village of Dingle! Carry on on your day's outing around the Slea head coastline for the Slea Ring and this will open your eyes to a whole different terrain ! Ventry and Ballyferriter ( home of Ryan's Daughter location) awaits you on this leg of your trip!
