The West Country region

The Ancient Celts described Somerset as the 'Land of the Summer People' as the winter floods which made the land uninhabitable, ebbed away in summer, giving rise to rich grazing land. Today, Somerset is a soft county of lush green pasture, wetlands and rolling hills steeped in legend and history and myth. It is home to medieval churches, quaint stone villages, a ruined Abbey, a beautiful Cathedral, the oldest street in Europe, several castles and a Bishop's Palace set within a moat. Here too is the stuff of legends: Arthur and Guinevere, King Alfred and his cakes, Glastonbury Tor, Avalon, Chalice Well and the White and Red Springs, the Holy Thorn, the Holy Grail, Joseph of Arimathea, Ley Lines and earth energies. In the immediate vicinity there are also several important historical sites such as an Iron Age Lake Village at Godney, a Bronze Age castle at Cadbury, the site of the Battle of Sedgemoor at Westonzoyland (the last battle on English soil), Cheddar Gorge with its famous cheese and dramatic caves, and Wookey Hole - a vast show cave together with a host of other attractions.

It is also home to the beautiful Somerset Levels - a wetland area that is an ornithologist's paradise - stretching southwards from Wells to Taunton and eastwards from Bridgwater to Pilton. In the winter months hundreds of thousands of starlings gather at dusk forming great ribbons in the sky, and hosts of migratory white mute swans roost in the sedges and bogs at Westhay. In October and November the famous Mists of Avalon descend creating a hauntingly beautiful landscape that inspires artists and writers alike. A climb to the top Glastonbury Tor at such a time is like standing on an island in a floating grey sea and is one of life's magical moments.

Nearby are Weston Super Mare with its vast sandy beach, donkey rides and Kiss Me Quick hats (only a 40 minute drive), Lyme Regis with its Cobb (made famous by the film The French Lieutenant's Woman) and beachside cafes (i80 minutes drive) and the World Heritage Centre of Bath with its Roman thermal spa, and bohemian shops and restaurants (40 minute drive.) Pre-historic Avebury, Silbury Hill and Stonehenge can also all be visited in a single day trip.

Glastonbury

Glastonbury is a town that never rests. There is always something going on. It is home to various conferences and festivals throughout the year: the Goddess Conference which lasts a whole week when the town is filled with colourful women from every corner of the globe; the Megalithomania conference on standing stones; the Glastonbury Symposium (which investigates Crop Circles and other mysteries); the world famous Glastonbury Festival; Beltane Celebrations (May Day); the Guy Fawkes Glastonbury Carnival - a well-kept secret and an event Disneyland would be proud of; the Majma Dance Festival; the Catholic Pilgrimage to the Abbey in July; the Glastonbury Extravaganza of music at the Abbey in August with its wonderful fireworks display; open air Shakespearean Plays and free musical events at the Abbey during the summer months; Somerset Art Week - a treasure trail of affordable art - as well as weekly spiritual talks on various subjects, visiting healers and gurus, satsungs, sound healing sessions, live gigs in local pubs (sometimes Mick Jagger's brother Chris performs) and a myriad of other interesting events put on by locals and visitors alike. It is home to some extraordinary shops selling everything from crystal skulls to unique felt-trimmed clothes and quirky affordable art, a weekly street market on Tuesdays, a Farmers's Market on the last Saturday in the month, the largest health food shop in the West and a theatre in Street which many visiting performers claim is as good as any in London which shows a variety of art films and live events several times a week. Check out Glastonbury Online for details. (You can see why we choose to live here!) And if you are exhausted by all of that then simply people watch some of Glastonbury's extraordinary characters in one of the many cafes.
