Sharpham is based on the Avalon Marshes which is part of the Somerset levels.. It is a tranquil place steeped in history, archaeology, wildlife and atmosphere. The Avalon Marshes contain a mixture of older habitats including wet woodland, grazing and fens. Newer habitats such as reedbed and open water have been formed from reclaiming the old peat workings. Sharpham is one of the largest yet least populated Avalon Marshes parishes. With the introduction of mechanical peat extraction the landscape has been transformed from one of isolated small holdings to peat works and diverse wildlife habitats.

Family of Mum, Dad, Teenager (15) and young lad (5). Wanted a week away from work, e-mail, phones etc. This holiday gave us all that and more. Very close to a superb conservation area 'Ham Wall', where we walked early most mornings to spot the Bittern and Great Egrets that nest in the area. All very flat walks, so no problems with mobility issues, if you can take bikes then there are great tracks to explore. The site is close to Glastonbury with all it's mystical connotations. Very impressed with the Glastonbury Abbey ruins, I had no idea of it's existence or importance in times of yore. Ebor Gorge and Cheddar are both well worth the time to go see, the first being free. A little further, we went to Brean Sands, the sea is miles away at low tide, so loads of castle construction opportunities. The yurt share kitchen and lavatory facilities and an impressive shower room. Carolyn and Mark, the proprietors are both very friendly and informative and will do any thing to keep the campers happy. The tea room is open to the public most days but is in no way a hindrance, just more people to chat to, and the optional breakfasts are delicious! In all a really laid back holiday. Thank you Carolyn and Mark. |
