Description: La Giudecca is a group of islands located between Venice and its Lido and a complete oasis of tranquility set apart from the bustle of Venice. There are a number of theories surrounding its name that include on the one hand a connection to the numerous Jewish community that were residents here, or the fact that it may derive from the law approved in the IX century that meant the exile here for a brief time of the different zudegà families (the judged ones) , families that had rebelled against the powers at be.
The island was originally a settlement for fishermen; although later an industrial zone was constructed it fell into disuse after the Second World War. Currently la Giudecca is a residential area that is ideal as a place to rest, relax and get away from busy city life into the country.
There are number of places of tourist interest: to the east of the island there is a brick construction in neo-gothic style, the XIX Molino Stucky. At the beginning of the Second World War this building was home to the largest pasta factory in Italy and is today a hotel. It is also worth visiting the Chiesa del Santissimo Redentore (Church of the Most Holy Redeemer) one of Paladios most sublime works, or the Santa Eufemia church (1576), one of the oldest in Venice. The island is also worth a visit during the festival of the Redentore, where Venice and la Giudecca are connected by a floating bridge across the Giudecca Canal.
Contrary to appearances la Giudecca also provides quite lively evening entertainment. The top floor of the Molino Stucky is also home to a bar and restaurant and boasts an amazing 360º panoramic view over the centre of Venice and the whole lagoon. It is also possible to visit the Giudecca 795 art gallery that often hosts the private events or presentations of new artists.
The island of San Giorgio Maggiore located to the east of la Giudecca, was formerly inhabited by Benedictine monks. Its basilica and monastery date back to 1559 and are two of the best examples of Palladios art and houses some of Tinotorettos last paintings such as the Last Supper and the The Deposition.
