Casadevall - fantastic pool!
About the home
Casadevall villa is another fantastic villa offered in exclusivity by Charlie and Maria at villasbarcelona since 2000. This house is time-tested and true, and all rentals come with a full copy of our 90-page local Guidebook, so that you get the most from your holiday.
Villa Casadevall was built by a well-known local architect about 15 years ago. The building itself consists of a central two-storey oval-shaped central living part of the villa, fronted by the garden and pool area, and flanked by two curved one-storey wings on each side: the north wing with five bedrooms (2 en suite) and one shared bathroom, and the south wing housing the kitchen, the gym, one bedroom and a bathroom, which also has the sauna, as well as a 4-car garage. <p>But undoubtedly the nicest part of the house is the outsidea covered poolside porch, the wholesome garden with plenty of pine shade, the diamond-shaped pool, fun for adults too, and a covered BBQ area with a big outdoor dining table and direct acces to the kitchen. These features make this house extremely agreable for holiday-makers.

Further details indoors:
The layout of this villa is quite logical. The building itself consists of a two one-storey wings flanking a central two-storey oval-shaped livingroom office, with the pool and garden in front, and the parking lot and driveway to the remote control gate behind.
The north wing has five bedrooms. At the end of the hall, bedroom 1) is an en suite bedroom with a 150x200 cm bed, private full bathroom with a separate toilet room, and access directly to the garden and pool area. 2) Another en suite bedroom with 150x200 cm bed and private full bathroom and also direct access to the pool area. 3) and 4) two bedrooms with 135x180 cm beds facing the driveway side of the house, and 5) a sort of kiddy bedroom with lots of toys and children´s decoration and two single 90x180 cm beds, and direct access to the pool area (see the photo where you see the babyfoot table just outside the room). These three rooms share a full bathroom with bath and shower in the hallway.
On the south wing of the house there is bedroom 6) with two single 90x180 cm beds and the bathroom across the hall, that has a shower stall and the 4-man sauna. This bedroom might have originally been intended as the maid´s room as it is over on the kitchen side of the house and doesn´t have nice built-in closets like the other bedrooms. Beyond that there is the gym with weightlifting and static bicycles and other exercise equippedment, and then the 4-car garage. The caretaker has installed a electric counter to charge for the electicity you use for the sauna as an extra ever since some guests have left the sauna on for the entire two weeks of their stay.
The split-level living room is bright, spacious and comfortable, set around a large fireplace on one side and TV on wheels on the other. There are two large white sofas and two large poofs and a card table an other assorted chairs, all behind large window panes offering great views of the pool and the pine forest. The lighting is especially nice at night time, with lots of halogen spotlights in the slanting ceiling as well as some free-standing lamps. There is also an old hifi system that still works and a curiously ecclectic collection of old cassettes that I really enjoyed exploring. The TV has local digital channels, many of them in original language broadcasting, so you can always find something in English, and some channels, like the Disney Channel, are always in English, 24 hours a day.
Between the living room and the kitchen is the dining table backed by some handsome cabinets where it seems the owner has decided to leave some of his better wine and cognac glasses, but when I stayed there in July 2009 we had all our meals in the BBQ dining area outdoors next to the kitchen, or for a quick snack, in the kitchen itself, where there is a table for about 4.
The kitchen area at Casadevall villa is divided into three rooms, the kitchen, a pantry, and a washroom. The kitchen, which measures about 20m2, is relatively small for such a large house, but has a nice foodprep island in the middle and a small table with seating for four. You´ll find the usual double sink, a 4 burner stovetop, oven and extractor, a normal sized dishwasher, a normal 1,8 m sized fridge, microwave, toaster, stick mixer, electric drip coffee-maker, stick mixer, juicer, and tea kettle. We did most of our foodprep outdoors, and most of our cooking at the BBQ.
In the pantry you´ll find a large top-loading second freezer unit and plenty of shelving to store your shopping.
The washroom has a washing machine, a sink for hand washing, and an iron and ironing board.
The best feature of the kitchen and the two doors with direct access to the garden and outdoor covered BBQ dining area, very elegant, with plenty of counterspace, one large table and two small round ones we used for the kids tables, and this area, like all the garden and even the pool itself, is nicely lit at night. We had all our meals out here, breakfast, lunch & dinner, and even an afternoon picnic in the garden sitting on the grass.
Further details outdoors:
Undoubtedlly the most elegant part of the house are the outdoor sofas and loungechairs between the livingroom and the pool. There are a number of comfortable sofas, coffeetables, and easychairs for everyone to sit outdoor, not counting the 9 reclining pool loungers set around the pool.
This is a unique feature - several outdoor wicker-type sofas and coffeetables - I have not seen at other properties!

General Proceedures
1) Deposits:
The standard method for making a reservation is by paying a deposit of 25%, usually directly to the owner´s bank account. This deposit is to guard against no-shows, and the amount received is deducted from the total cost of the rental. The remaining 75% is due either prepaid well ahead of your arrival or in cash upon occupying the property (you will be met at the property by the owners or caretaker).
There are many ways to make the deposit. By far the most common method is by Electronic Bank Transfer, and most of you will simply make a transfer from you online banking account, but in some cases I can make a charge on your VISA or Mastercard or you can send a Certified Bankers Cheque directly to the owners. I describe these methods in detail in email 2 of 3 on deposits. You decide which method is best for you, or feel free to come up with your own method. European Union bank account holders will want to send bank transfers as there are now absolutely free charges and commissions between EMU countries, EU regulation 2,560/2001 which came into effect July 2002.
2) Price all inclusive and changeover times
Rental fees quoted in our website are all-inclusive and there are no extra or hidden charges of any kind. All properties are rented clean, with plenty of clean sheets and towels and kitchen linen, etc., as well as your usual cooking utensils, and in many cases some basic start-up foodstuffs, like salt and pepper and olive oil, vinegar, coffee, etc. is there upon arrival. Some houses offer more generous welcome packages of food and drink. Those who rent for two weeks get a house cleaning and sheet and towel and linen change at the end of the first week included in the rental. Additional maid service is available upon request (usually at about 10 to 12 Euros per hour, minimum 3 hours). You are kindly requested to leave the house pretty much as you found it at the end of your stay.
There is no damage deposit. We trust you to contact me or the owners if something is broken so that we can fix or replace it before the next guests come in.
In the summer high season, most properties try to not to lose a day between rentals, and rentals are back to back, so incoming guests are kindly requested to occupy the house in the afternoon starting as of 5 pm and depart relatively early on the last day, usually before 10 am, so as to give time for a thorough cleaning between rentals. This is standard everywhere in the villa rental business. If you want to show up early, please check with me first. We can try to arrange for you to leave your things somewhere safe in the house and come back later when the cleaning crew has finished. Do not go into the house and please stay out of the way of the cleaners, gardeners, and pool maintenence staff or they might not finish their jobs! I get a lot of complaints from owners about guests who show up early and interrupt the cleaning. If you are arriving late in the day when shops are closed at 21:00h or on a Sunday, or on a holiday, I can arrange to have the owners do a shopping for you.
3) Balance due
The balance due for all rentals must be either prepaid well in advance of your rental (see email 2 of 3) or handed over in Euros cash upon arrival and getting the keys for the property from the owners. Payment at the end of the rental is not acceptable. Owners do not want to be in the position of having to chase after their guests for payment. In fact I advise owners not to hand over the keys until they have full payment.
It is up to you to make sure payment in full is made prior to arrival or be prepared to pay in cash upon arrival. Don´t leave this to the last minute as local ATM machines will not give you more 500 Euros per day, and local banks will not accept more than a few hundred Euros worth of traveller´s cheques due to massive fraud in that sector.
While you are here, house owner´s and/or their caretakers are always on hand in case you need them, as am I (Charlie). I'll be sending you an email asking for all your arrival details. Let's work together to make things go smoothly for all concerned. To a large extent, this sector of the "hospitality industry" depends on mutual trust and respect between owners and their guests. I can always be reached so feel free to call me or have the owners call me with any questions you may have, whether it be ahead of arrival, when you are with the owners, or during your stay. My telephone numbers are in the signature below.
Sincerely,
Charlie @ villasbarcelona

The Costa Brava/Catalonia region

What can one say about the Costa Brava?
Often considered a blend of the Côte d'Azur & Tuscany but with a Spanish flair for fun, the Costa Brava is rightfully famous as one of Europe's premiere holiday destinations. Why?
From the breathtakingly beautiful coastline, where wide beaches of golden sand and crystal clear waters alternate with rocky promentories and little coves backed by sheer cliffs topped with pine and oak forests, the Costa Brava boasts 150 blue-flag, top notch beaches. The interior of the Costa Brava is every bit as stunning as the coast (and far less touristy, of course!), with pristine medieval villages set in typically Mediterranean landscapes on the coastal plain, looking very much like Tuscany, and quickly ascending to typically Alpine landscapes as you work your way up into the Pyrenees, with trout-filled streams feeding environmentally protected lakes - like the one in Banyoles - offering a welcome alternative to the coastal beaches, yet only half an hour away by car.
There is always plenty to do. My 90-page guidebook describes 10 routes you can take on daytrips throughout the region. From village to village and including historical sites, recommended beaches, local festivities and folklore, restaurants, market towns, etc -- the guidebook in indispensable for gettting the most of your holiday and steering you clear of the worst tourist-traps in the area. Included are info on the 14 golf courses on the Costa Brava, numerous aquaparks & go-carting circuits, and every town seems to have a horseback-riding club & bicycle rental.
... but of course the main reason for coming to this part of the world is for the good weather, the laid back and friendly local atmosphere, and the excellent and very affordable food and drink. My guidebook explains local dishes, recommends restaurants and cafés, markets and specialty shops, and includes a guide to Spanish wines and cavas. By the way, my favorite local prix fix lunch menus cost about 10 Euros for a 3 or 4 course meal, including wine.
While I am being asked to talk about the Costa Brava, most people enjoy a day trip or two to Barcelona, city center is only one hour away by car or local commuter train. Many guests will also make their way to the Port Aventura amusement park, two hours due south, just off the AP-7 highway, just a few kms from the house. Day trips into Southern France are also recommended, the French border is just a 40-minute drive due north.
When you book your rental villa with me, I will send you a copy of the Guidebook as a .pdf file.
To sum up in one quick phrase, the Province of Girona and Costa Brava is often described as "a quintessentially Mediterranean experience". After only 23 years living here, I couldn't agree more!
The Girona / Sils area
Casadevall Villa is just outside of Sils, a town 15 km inland from Blanes and Lloret de Mar and the southern resorts of the Costa Brava, just off the N-2 and AP-7 motorways, an hour by car from Barcelona (though I would recommend you leave the car in the free parking at Sils station and make your way around by commuter train: 55 minutes into Barcelona, 15 to Girona, 30 to Figueres, etc.. The Sils train station is about 2 kilometers from the house, a 20 minute walk! and train´s are every hour from 7 am to 11 pm.) I won´t spend much time on the description of the area here. In short, Sils is not such an attactive village but very practical for its excellent location vis a vis the main sights, and plenty of shopping, restaurants, markets, PGA golf, tenis, spas, etc.

Dear Charlie
Casadevall was a great experience - there was plenty of space for a big family and the fabulous swimming pool was equally huge. The space both inside and outside was amazing - its not often one could say that you had your own forest!
There's plenty of car parking spaces and it has its own gym - which is great if you've over-indulged! The table football gave us lots of exciting touraments and the BBQ/outdoor kitchen was to die for!
Getting us all together for meals was so important and led to both sociable dinners as well as lots of fun jumping in the pool afterwards. Whilst it is hidden away and quite remote, if this is what you are looking for then its perfect. We didn't want a lively holiday and our trips to the beach by car were infrequent - but it was not far away. We drove into Barcelona one day just for a change of scene. After 8 days nobody really wanted to leave.
A great holiday and one that my father said "was the best he's ever known" - Lord knows that's a compliment I've never heard from him before!
Thank you Charlie and Miguel for your kindness.
Jane Bishop, Salisbury.

Hi Charlie
No problem at all except this is a busy time for me and the holiday was quite a while ago.
1) the house was spacious and kitchen well stocked with utensils etc. we used the barbeque pit on several nights.
2) the housekeeper was fantastic. He was incredibly warm and helpful, and was very kind to send my nephew’s stuffed toy to Barcelona. Could I have his address pls – or the address at Casadevell – to send him a note/
3) the surrounding area was very pleasant and good for a morning/evening walk. There was a bird watching area which we discovered on our last day.
Kind regards,
