The Catalunia region
Girona is a fantastic place where one can visit typical mountain towns and villages with mediaeval buildings, such as Besalú, Santa Pau, Beget, Ripoll, Camprodon, Sant Joan de les Abadesses, Molló and Queralbs. We should also mention the city of Olot itself, with its intense commercial and cultural life.
On the other hand, the Costa Brava that includes the Alt Empordà, Baix Empordà, Gironès, Pla de l'Estany and Selva counties has a great diversity of landscape, with sea and mountains.
In the shore, one can find small villages that have own charm such as Peratallada, Peralada, Monells, Ullastret and Pals, seafaring towns such as El Port de la Selva, Palafrugell and Cadaqués, major tourist centres such as Roses, Empuriabrava, Blanes, Lloret de Mar, L'Estartit, Platja d'Aro, Sant Feliu de Guíxols and Palamós, and characteristic towns and cities such as La Bisbal (the pottery capital), Figueres (with its original and unique Dalí Museum) and Girona (with one of Europe's most widely visited medieval Jewish district).
Brief glimpses of history
The current English born as a result of the colonization of the Benedictine monks of Saint Measure (later established in Amer), the ninth century that had received the award of colonization of French King Louis the Pious. The earliest documentation of English is also spoken of the ninth century. At that time, the original center of the town must place it in the saguera Santa Maria de Sales, the embryo of the present town of wineries (hence on behalf of the population). Sacralitzada called sanctuary located in the area around a church where all violence committed was considered a sacrilege which had to answer before a court bishop.
The increase of population, creating an emerging market and the needs of defense led to the construction of a castle Termens (in addition to the defense of the territory became too political and administrative center of the area). Not until 1242 that the first news of the find said the English Castle, when it is referenced in the will of Viscount Guerau V Cabrera.
Until 1788 the town was formed by the daughter of an old castle town of Cabrera Termens, the sanctuary of Santa Maria de Sales (the wineries), possessions planted (Pasterals today), and San Amanç Trullàs (currently within the term of Bescanó).
English castle is mentioned for the first time in the will of Guerau V Cabrera (1242), who bequeathed the Viscounts of Cabrera her son Guerau VI, while created for another son, Ramon, a small heritage made up of English castles and Brunyola. The lack of descent of Marquesa, the daughter of Guerau VI, the Viscounts of Cabrera will be inherited by a son of Raymond, and Bernard de Cabrera. The Old English is configured, then, about this ancient possession of Cabrera.
Over time, the buildings inside and outside the walled enclosure increased leveraging materials and structures (abutments, walls, teachers, etc..) Provided by the same wall. Keep in mind the difficulty of extracting and transporting construction materials. In fact, the urban structure of the town remembers the current English of the XIV and XV, typical of the Middle Ages. This, therefore, is supported on two main themes that run parallel to the path of the wall on Main Street (aka Street Amont) and the Town Square. Like many medieval towns in Catalonia, at the time the streets of the town were still narrower than now, and the subsequent growth of the population involved the progressive crowding of houses, in order to remain within security guaranteeing the walls.
In the sixteenth century were already perfectly formed Down the street, the Mayor and the neighborhood of the castle, and there were the outside walls of the castle and chapel of St. Michael (built on a bastion), the Santa Magdalena (up basically for the poor and the hospital chapel) and the mill of the castle (in the Ciscot).
Not until the seventeenth century that population growth will cause urban sprawl outside the city walls, which then will be more or less unchanged until the nineteenth century.
The nineteenth century marks a turning point in urban history of English as it is at this time that the flat area grows dramatically, and consequently the dichotomy people born old / new, which is still present.
The old town you can also see some modernist buildings of the nineteenth century. In these cases, there is a clear picture on areas in proportion to the width of the plot. Large windows and balconies framed in stone (or thick mortar that protrudes about 2 cm.) And balconies and railings. Sometimes, use of pottery as decoration. Besides Ash Can, Can also include fish.
A beautiful example of the architecture of the nineteenth century is the home of Ash Can, restored by renowned architect Rafael Maso noucentista Girona. The character who had restored the house was Thomas Ash, who towards 1880 had been manager of the mines of the Holy Father. The Ash family, large landowners and ranchers, and came from Estanyol come to English in the eighteenth century. Along with this we can see the farm house of Ash Can (Avail Street, No. 27-29), much older than the modernist style and diversity. Under the arch there is a door that leads to the courtyard and gardens of Ash Can. Interestingly, the landowner would allow passage to their property because there was an old road "missader" to go to St. Peter Sestronques.

"Excellent location, hospitality and accomodation"
Spent a week at Casa Rural Can Pol which we used as a base for a week's cycle training. The location couldn't have been better with easy access to some of the best roads for cycling I have ever been on. Cristina was a brilliant host, supplying us with maps and local information and making sure our stay was stress-free. The house was clean, spacious and well-supplied. Couldn't have wished for more.

"Brillant! Couldnt be Better."
Stayed for two weeks during which time we walked, cycled, kayaked, swam in rivers and sea and enjoyed great hospitality from Cristina and her Family. From the beginning we were welcomed and helped in every possible way. The situatin is ideal; on top of a hill, nice breezes when hot, lovely tree to have breakfast under. It is up a private road/track with great views. In easy reach is Girona, national parks, the coast. Most things in the area about 30 minutes drive (you have to have a car for most things). After two weeks we still had things we wanted to do. Admittedly we had spent several days just where we were, but its the kind of place where you want to do that, comfortable and easy.
It didnt have a swimming pool, but that would spoil it...its on a farm, sheep with bells, and so on. Cristina pointed us to several great swimming places....we never went in a pool, but swam in river pools (big ones, beautiful) and in a waterfall (that was really cold but worth it. OK, I didnt go in, but the others did!)
No A/C but didnt need it, breezes did the trick. Well equipped kitchen, sometimes we ate out (easy to do) and sometimes we shopped and cooked "at home". It did feel like home!
So, beautiful, welcoming, comfortable and well placed. Couldnt want for more!
