The Umbria region

Lake Trasimeno is located in Central Italy and surrounded by the great art cities this area between Florence and Rome is so famous for, places like Siena, Arezzo, Perugia, Assisi, Orvieto and Gubbio, all cities enormously rich in history and culture. Eight towns surround the Lake itself, some on panoramic hilltops – like Città della Pieve, Paciano, Panicale and Piegaro – and others right on the shore - Castiglione del Lago, Magione, Passignano sul Trasimeno and Tuoro sul Trasimeno.

The Park and the Islands

The “La Valle” Oasis is the most interesting part of Lake Trasimeno, from a naturalistic point of view. Its shallow waters and extensive cane fields make it an important stopover and nesting place for thousands of birds along their annual migration routes. The Oasis is open to visitors all year Guided tours are offered with an audio guide (English and Italian) and there is a wooden walkway over the water with observatory. The Oasis also has a bird ringing facility.

Isola Polvese falls under the jurisdiction of Castiglione del Lago and is the largest of the three islands. It bears witness to many centuries of history with such churches as the Chiesa di San Secondo, the Monastero Olivetano, the Chiesa di San Giuliano and a recently restored 14th century castle. Environmental sustainability is the philosophy with which the island is managed and it has resulted in the creation of an educational scientific park which conducts research, offers classes and teaches students about the environment. The island is home to a Stay and Study Centre with a meeting hall, accommodations and hostel.

Isola Maggiore is under the jurisdiction of Tuoro sul Trasimeno and is the only one of the three islands that has a stable population. It still preserves the unique atmosphere of a 15th century fishing village. In 1211 Saint Francis of Assisi came here at Lent to pray and fast in peace and quiet, and there is now a lovely chapel dedicated to his arrival on the island during a violent storm, marking the place where he landed and knelt down in prayer. One of the feathers in the cap of the island is the Irish-point lace made by the local women. The Isola Maggiore Museum Circuit indicates the most important places to see on the Island.

?History and culture? The history of this part of Umbria is made up of emotions and interesting historical personages. Discovering these places is a bit like reliving those ancient sensations

Castiglione del Lago is located at the western end of Umbria, on the border with the Tuscan provinces of Siena and Arezzo. Its territory includes a large part of Lake Trasimeno and Polvese Island. The town itself sits on a hilltop which many thousands of years ago was the Lake's fourth island (the other three, still islands, are Maggiore, Minore and Polvese), before the gully dried up and it became connected to the land. The Roman origins of the town can still be easily recognized in the parallel streets that characterize it.

Every year, during the second half of July, the charming towns and villages around Lake Trasimeno will become enveloped by the stirring music of the Trasimeno Blues Festival. This is a unique chance for everyone to enjoy the stunning views and unique atmosphere of the Lake area – its villages, parks and shores - to the accompaniment of great music. ?Towns such as Castiglione del Lago, Città della Pieve, Magione, Paciano, Panicale and Passignano will be host to this journey through the blues, from the

traditional genre to the more modern versions.

Ilca, the International Lightning Class Association, has officially announced that the World Championship races have been assigned to the Club Velico Castiglionese, presided over by France De Regis.

Lake Trasimeno will host teams from four continents as they compete for the world title.

The wine road of “Colli del Trasimeno”: an invitation to a journey among the vineyards and wineries which dot the hilltops between the lake and the Tiber River, a land which has cultivated grapes and made wine since ancient time

Oil is one of the oldest and most typical products of this area. Extensive olive-groves cover the characteristic hills of the landscape with a thick mantle of silvery green, and yield a plentiful and top-quality product.

?Trekking? The best way to explore this part of Umbria is along its paths and trails, exploring the landscape and enjoying panoramas that will take your breath away. ?

?Biking? There are many trails and paths for bikes and mountain bikes around Lake Trasimeno. Cycle-tourism itineraries for a sport-filled vacation. ?
