The Cumbria/Lake District
There is so much to see and do in Cumbria - To the north is historic Carlisle and Hadrians Wall and to the west is the Solway Coast, an area of outstanding natural beauty and haven for wildlife. To the south is the Lake District and to the east Penrith and the gateway to the Pennines. Cumbria is the second biggest of the English counties and contains a vast array of scenery including high mountain peaks, waterfalls lakes, dales and valleys. The area also has a colourful history and there are numerous places of historical interest to visit.
Northumberland is unique. It is the least densely populated County in England; and has its own National Park, the most remote and unspoilt of all the English National Parks. It has more castles open to the public than any other county. Hadrian's Wall is the largest world heritage site in the country; and at Kielder, it has the largest man-made lake in Western Europe set in the country's largest man-made forest. It has its own food and drink and even its own distinct birds and wildlife.
The weather in Cumbria and Northumberland may be characterised as dry, cool and sunny. Weather extremes which are sometimes experienced by other parts of the UK (such as droughts, floods, hurricanes, heat waves or extreme cold) are all exceptionally rare.
Gilsland area
The quaint and tranquil village of Gilsland is a place to get away from it all and relax. The village is served by excellent amenities including three public houses for eating and drinking out, a post office and Tea shop. All amenities are within walking distance. Gilsland is situated with Hadrians Wall World Heritage Site and there are numerous sites of historical interest within walking distance.
Other nearby attractions include the market town of Haltwhistle which has numerous shops and a leisure centre with swimming pool or maybe visit the historic town of Brampton or Lanercost Priory which was built in AD1166. The Walltown picnic site at Greenhead is within walking distance and an ideal place for a relaxing picnic.
Gilsland is the perfect place from which to tour the northern part of the British mainland. It's central position gives easy access the historic cities of Hexham, Berwick-upon-Tweed and Newcastle-upon-Tyne to the east and Carlisle and the Solway Coast to the west. To the north is the Scottish Lowlands and Edinburgh and to the south the Lake District. You'll be spoilt for choice!
