Home description

The Cottage is a restored, stone-built house giving onto the courtyard of Sommery Castle on one side and lawns on the other. It is situated in southern Burgundy overlooking the Loire and the Loire valley. The Château itself dates from the Romans in 10 AD and has been constantly restored and modified over the centuries. It is surrounded by its own fenced parkland of 50 acres. It is the oldest inhabited château on the Loire.

Tastefully restored, the Cottage accommodates 8. The kitchen is equipped with freezer, fridge, dishwasher and electric cooker. It also has a wood-burning fireplace. Next to the kitchen, the living room has DVD and TV. The terrace has a barbecue with table and benches. The downstairs bathroom has a washer and tumble drier. There is a double bedroom downstairs looking over its own patio.

Upstairs are three bedrooms, two twin and one double, and a second bathroom. Central heating is electric.

The pool and surroundings are child safe. There is a covered play area with badminton, ping-pong, see saw, climbing ropes and pétanque (the French national sport of bowls).

Sommery is noted for its absolute peace and quiet. The village of Gilly is 1 km away with its village shop and post office. You can use one of the many bikes that are at your disposal, go by car in 1 minute or walk in 15. For more important shopping Digoin is 15 minutes away with 4 supermarkets, banks and all the rest. Paray-le-Monial is 30 minutes, Moulins 40, Mâcon and Vichy 1 hour, Lyon 2, Geneva 2 and a half and Paris 3.

The Burgundy / Saone-et-Loire region

Food and wine:

The Charollais region around Sommery is famous for its white Charollais beef cattle and as a result for its superb beef. The Mâcon region one hour to the East is renowned for its wine as is Saint Pourcain half an hour to the west. There are a number of fine restaurants offering both local and international cuisine.

Weather:

• Summer is normally warm to hot with temperatures in the low 30s. Rainfall is about 4-5 inches over the 8 weeks of July and August.

• Spring and Autumn are pleasantly mild with temperatures around 20°-24°.

• Winter varies from year to year. One year we cut the grass up to the end of December. Another it freezes at night.

Gilly-sur-Loire area

The area offers many activities all within easy reach: a theme park, zoo, via ferrata, kayaking, paragliding with an
instructor, karting, restaurants, vineyards, châteaux, gardens, historic churches, markets... This part of Burgundy is away from the North-South motorway from Paris to Marseilles and from the crowds and traffic that it brings.

There is at least one local market within easy reach every day of the week.
Tennis courts are available in Diou 5 minutes away by car.

Cycling is peaceful along the 50 km cycle path made from a disaffected railway line. There are a number of bikes at your disposal in Sommery.

It is possible to hire a canal barge for half a day or a full day. You will go through a number of locks and over the stunning viaduct that crosses the Loire.

Kayaks and canoes can be rented in Digoin (15 minutes away). You leave your car in Digoin and are driven up the Loire the distance you wish to canoe. You then paddle back down to where you left your car. The Loire is peaceful and so this is not white-water rafting but a gentle day out. As you come down the river you will see many of the 100 odd species of birds that live in the area.

Several antique dealers within easy reach are worth a visit.

Le Pal theme park, 15 minutes from Sommery, is a favourite for both children and adults. The park covers 50 acres and is divided into two, half being taken up by a zoo with over 500 animals in semi-liberty. You pay on entering the park after which a small train takes you into the centre. You then have free access to all the games and events.

...and if you just want to do nothing, you can lie by the pool and if you are patient one of the 30 peacocks that roam freely about the property will come and eat out of your hand.

Also on offer: Tennis, Kayaking, Para-gliding (duo with a monitor. No experience needed), Via Ferrata, Walking, Biking, Fishing, Theme park, Canal barge hire
