Flat 5 is part of Terra Alpina, a former farmhouse that was completely rebuilt and converted to six luxurious holiday apartments in 2007/2008. It sits 300 metres above the road to the St. Bernard tunnel and is half-way between the centre of Aosta and the Swiss border (15 minutes in either direction). It is very convenient for the ski resorts of the Aosta Valley.

Even by the standards of the Alps, the views are spectacular. From north to south there is a 30 km panorama across the Aosta Valley surrounded by dramatic Alpine peaks. It sits at an altitude of 1,300 metres, so the environment is extremely lush in summer and relatively mild in winter.

Further details indoors

The apartment is equipped to a very high standard. The kitchen is equipped as a full domestic kitchen, not a holiday rental unit. There are two bathrooms, which are very stylish with high quality baths and showers. The main bedroom has an en-suite bathroom and a walk in wardrobe. The living area includes an extending dining table, a very large double sofa-bed and direct access to the private garden.

Further details outdoors

There is a private parking area for all flats next to the front entrance. There is also 1.5 acres (6000m2) of shared garden which includes meadows and a wood. There is a path through the wood that leads down to a charming picnic spot (still within the grounds of Terra Alpina). This particular flat also has a small private garden with fantastic views overlooking the valley.

Further details

The apartment includes a welcome pack which has essentials such as tea, coffee, milk etc. There is an English-speaking manager who lives 10 minutes away and can handle any problems.

The North West Italy region

The Aosta Valley is equally attractive in winter and summer.

In winter, it is one of the great skiing areas of Italy, with international resorts such as Courmayeur and Cervinia plus a host of medium-sized resorts such as Pila, La Thuile and Monterosa. Two ski resorts are within 20 minutes of Terra Alpina and there are eight ski resorts within an hour's drive.

In summer, it is even more popular as Italians come here to escape the humidity of the plains. It has a huge number of sporting activities in the summer, including hiking, mountain biking, horse riding and white-water rafting.

The city of Aosta itself has more Roman ruins than any city in Europe outside Rome itself, and has a superb museum under the Roman walls. As the capital of one of Italy's most prosperous regions, it also has excellent shops and restaurants and has a beautiful pedestrianised town centre.

In the summer, sports include horse-riding, golf (there is a nine hole course within walking distance of the house), white water rafting, hiking, mountain biking - in fact virtually any sport that can be done in the Alps. All year round, there are the thermal spas, a brand-new swimming pool and wellness centre less than 10 minutes drive from the house, plus the historic city of Aosta.

It was built by the Romans and has been the gateway to the Alps for 2000 years. With so much trade passing through, it has always been very prosperous and the local architecture (and shops!) reflect that heritage.

"Beautiful mountain views"

We rent flat (number 5) on the ground floor (north side). In the time we were there (end of August) the temperature was between 30-36 degrees Celsius!
The flat is wel equiped and the system with the keys is super.
The views at the surrounding mountains are beautiful.
If we will be honest, we have some points:
We expected total silence, but we could hear the traffic to the St. Bernardino pass in the valley of Aosta when you were sitting in front of our flat.
The last part of the road to the chalet was not prepared (stones and sand) and there was just enough place to park your car in front of the chalet. The road ends at the chalet and therefore you must turn your car to go back to the main road. There was very few space to turn and after 3 times forwards backwards you could leave.
We are curious how this will be during the wintertime.
Nevertheless we enjoyed our holidays at Terra Alpina and wish Jay and Maria all the best.
