There are walking maps in the property and there are numerous well-marked walking routes in the area which are shown on the maps. Further maps and the english-speaking 'Grapevine' magazine detailing local events can be purchased in newsagents (In Ponte all'ania in particular which is nearby). The Tuscany region

This area is known as the Garfagnana region. It is rural and hilly with some spectacular scenery. It is ideal for walkers, or cyclists who like a challenge. Otherwise it is a great place for relaxing and visiting towns of interest such as Bagni di Lucca which has sports facilities and a spa and a long history of association with English literary artists. Barga is an attractive and historic town which has an annual jazz festival in late summer. Lucca is an historic walled city and has many good shops and restaurants. Access to Florence and the rest of Italy is easy by car or train from the local station in Ghivizzano. There are many interesting places to visit in the area and there are plenty of good supermarkets, local shops and restaurants. The weather should be good from spring through to the end of October, when the much cooler autumn weather begins. There is skiing at the resort of Abetone approximately one hour's drive from the villa.

Places to visit include the Grotto del Vento - an interesting underground labyrinth of caves with stalactites and stalagmites. There is a local monastery on the road to the Grotto where there is a restaurant with stunning views. Barga is well equipped for tourists with art galleries, shops and restaurants. There are also many interesting hill villages and towns in the area. Alternatively spend a day at the coast at Viarreggio or the more upmarket resort of Forte dei Marmi.

The Orechiella national park north of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana is home to local wildlife and has some fantastic mountain scenery. There are other recreational activities here associated with a park region, eg walking, mountain biking, boating.

Alternatively for bike hire try in Lucca which has a good range of mountain and road bikes. In Bagni di Lucca try quad biking, 4x4, paintball or rafting with There are other sports facilities in Bagni including a swimming pool and tennis courts.

For those requiring a more relaxing pastime the spa in Bagni di Lucca has all the usual spa treatments.

"Lazy week in beuatiful Tuscany"

Villa was really well equipped - far more like a home than a holiday let. Views down the valley were fabulous. Pool was a real hit with all 5 of us. Lots to do and see in the area. Would defintiely recommend and will seriously consider coming back again in future years. Have already recommended to friends!

Fantastic views, very private, quiet location and a great swimming pool.
This villa is well worth the hill for the scenic views and a great base to explore further afield by car (Florence for example). We stayed here as a base for cycling but would be very comfortable for a family holiday .

"Fantastic Villa, great location, facilities and well maintained"

We had a great holiday at Villa Pineta. The Villa itself, the location, the pool and the facilities all exceeded our expectations. We went as a family of 5 with 3 teenage kids and all had a really wonderful time. We have rented properties in Italy and Spain over the past 6 years or so, and can honestly say that Villa Pineta is one of the best we have rented.

The Villa is set in a very peaceful and relaxing location with very well kept and spacious gardens that provide an area for relaxing, or for the kids to be more energetic. It has a large, clean and well maintained pool, which was a must for our family. It is well proportioned with good sized rooms and very well equipped with more than enough crockery, cutlery and kitchen equipment for a family of 5 or more. It is within easy reach of many interesting hill top medieval villages which we enjoyed exploring, with enough restaurants close by for the nights we ate out.

The communication and information provided by the owner, Dawn, was very professional and helpful, with excellent directions and information pack sent prior to arrival. The local contact person, Barbara, was also very helpful in providing some local knowledge and tips for days out etc.....

Overall I would not hesitate in recommending Villa Pineta to anyone who is looking for a relaxing, peaceful holiday in Tuscany, with the opportunity to visit some wonderful local villages or the main cities of the region such as Pisa and Florence.
