Enquire nowThe Island of Gozo region
The Maltese archipelago consists of the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino and is a relatively small group of islands in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea with a rich history accumulated over the centuries, thus offering the prospective visitor many varied places of interest and things to discover. Just over 90km south of Sicily and 288km north of Africa, these islands have had various conquerors throughout the years, leaving behind them a mark in history.
Having a total population of around 400,000 people, Malta is the largest island. Gozo is the second largest and is ‘greener’ because it is more rural than Malta, where more crafts and traditions are still practiced among the inhabitants. Comino is mostly known for its Blue Lagoon, a crystal clear rocky beach and its other bays, one of which has of a nice four star hotel.
Enjoying sunny weather for the major part of the year, Gozo has a wide selection of different beaches and a laid back way of life. There are plenty of restaurants offering an exquisite and varied cuisine. With over 7,000 years of history, there is a great deal to see and do during your holiday in Gozo.
These islands have their own language – Maltese - which is based on Arabic but with various Italian and English loan words. English is also an official language and over 90% of the population talk and understand English very well. Italian is also spoken and understood widely. Malta joined the European Union as a full member in 2004 and adopted the Euro as its national currency in 2008.
Unique activities not to miss are the weekly village feasts in summer, the daily open market of Victoria held all throughout the year, the Carnival of Nadur in February and the Good Friday procession in a number of villages throughout Gozo.
The Ghajnsielem / Fort Chambray area
One can find a large number of beautiful sandy and rocky beaches all over the island of Gozo with a number of locations ideal for scuba diving and water sports. The Azure window, the Inland Sea, the Fungus Rock and the Dwejra watchtower, all located in Dwejra - a UNESCO World Heritage site -are all a must-see. Gozo has a very rich cultural heritage, which includes the 5000 year old Ggantija neolithic temples in Xaghra as well as the Victoria Citadel.
Gozo’s cultural calendar is ongoing with exciting activities scheduled through the year. Theatre enthusiasts will be enthralled by the island’s two theatres, the Aurora Opera House and the Astra Theatre, which have become synonymous with the various classical operas held there on a regular basis.
Meanwhile a blossoming art world is also emerging and several new galleries were inaugurated lately. Shopping lovers will feel at home in Gozo’s main shopping street - Triq it-Tigrija, or Racecourse Street - in the capital, Victoria, or exploring the eclectic markets that take place in spots throughout the island.
Gozo is replete with scenic routes and vistas and is the ideal place to explore on foot or bicycle, where one can enjoy panoramic views over hills, valleys, the rugged coastline, cliffs and other places of natural beauty.
As in the rest of the Mediterranean region, good food is important to the Gozitans. The traditional diet is one of fresh produce, fish and olive oil, and today this is blended within an array of restaurants all over the island.
Popular food hotspots include Marsalforn, Xlendi and Victoria where there is a wide variety of eateries to suit every palette. Top class international cuisine, including Italian, French, Chinese and Indian food, is also on offer.
Don’t let Gozo’s tranquillity fool you – the island is also bubbling with plenty for night lovers too. The nightlife can be energetic and busy, especially on weekends and during summer, with several clubs and bars on hand whether you fancy something classic or buzzing. Unique hotspots can be found all over the island but many are concentrated in the Xlendi and Victoria areas.
Gozo’s cultural calendar also ensures that there are many lively nights and the sprightly village feasts (complete with elaborate fireworks displays) dominate the summer months. Band music is also popular and each town or village has at least one band club which play during these ‘festi’ creating a vibrant aura of celebration and merriment through the streets.

From the first moment we contacted Mario, we felt instantly at ease and confident that a stay in his apartment would be everything we could hope for. I was looking for an apartment which would suit myself, my husband, my 3 year old daughter and 76 year old mother and what we found well exceeded expectations. It was beautifully furnished with two stunning bedrooms, a good sized kitchen with lovely open plan living area plus a luxury bathroom. We also had wifi and full air conditioning as standard, which was essential given the very hot summer. The bonus factor with Mario's apartment was the wrap around outside patio and garden area which came complete with bar-b-cue and sun-loungers. As for the resort, words can't possibly describe how stunning this is. Location wise, Fort Chambray is 10 minutes walk (up hill) from Mgarr Harbour port and is a restored fort currently undergoing further redevelopment after the initial phased building work. This is NOT a building site! Fort Chambray as it stands is the most incredible development with several swimming pools all accessible from any apartment within a minute or two. The main pool itself is, I believe, the largest in Gozo and has the most beautiful setting. Fort Chambray overlooks Comino with Malta in the distance and the view is one you can never get tired of gazing at. A wedding party came to have their photographs taken so that should speak for itself. Mario was a fabulous host and after meeting us at the airport, he brought us to the apartment which was stocked with food and water and furnished with books and a useful information/welcome pack. Once we were settled, we were able to explore our surroundings and we found this quite easy, even though we didn't have a car. People with mobility issues may find Fort Chambray slightly out of the way but we managed very well, walking to the local village (Ghajnsielem) most evenings and even during the high heat of the day though this is not recommended to those wiser than ourselves! Most of the apartments at Fort Chambray are privately owned and at times we had the pool to ourselves. This really felt like it was 'our' holiday - very quiet and leisurely. We took a bus tour round the island during our stay and can honestly say that it confirmed the wisdom of our choice in Fort Chambray. At night, we usually ate at one of Ghajnsielems lively restaurants near the stunning church. The whole town came alive as locals aged it seemed, from one to one hundred, dined, talked or danced the night away. All in all, it was a fabulous holiday and all 3 generations of our family enjoyed the experience so much that we truly regretted having to leave and won't even consider staying anywhere else, should we return in the future. |

Mario's apartment in Fort Chambray was great, and the Fort Chambray complex is very stylish, although it was very quiet when we were there during October. We imagine in the summer season, it would be a fair bit busier. Mario and Anna were very helpful, with Anna meeting us personally at the Gozo ferry and making sure we were fully settled in. You're not far from anywhere in Gozo so it's easy to explore the island, and even trips over to the main Malta island don't take long. Very nice, relaxing holiday. |

We were looking for a quiet relaxing holiday combined with some culture and Gozo certainly delivered - from the pretty fishing village of Xlendi, the prehistoric remains of the Ggantija temples, the... more |
