BookThe Crete region
Welcome to Rethymno, Crete! The beautiful city of Rethymno is standing on the site where ancient Rithymna used to be, as archaeological excavations of the late Neolithic period (3500- 2800 BC) proved. It is the gate way between Chania and Heraklion. Full of rich history, ancient sites, magnificent sandy beaches, Byzantine churches, lovely villages & lively resorts.
Rethymno combines an old- time aristocratic appearance with a modern aspect, a blend which is creating a unique atmosphere.
Various elements are participating to the charm of this attractive town such as the many arched doorways and stone staircases, 16th century buildings, Byzantine, Hellenic and Roman remains, narrow stone-paved streets, the small Venetian harbour and the superb huge municipal gardens, ideal for peacefulness and tranquility.
FESTIVALS AND CELEBRATIONS IN RETHYMNON:The Renaissance Festival is the culmination of the city's cultural festivals. The festival plays host during its three weeks to a variety of theatrical, musical and cinematic events as well as dance and multi-media spectacles. The Cretan wine festival Already over 35 years old, this celebration in the public park lasts three weeks in the heart of summer and attracts thousands of visitors. The Rethymnon Carnival held at the start of Lent every year, has been revived in recent years and it can be regarded one of the best and biggest in Greece. The feast of Klidonas, a historic celebration every June which maintains an interesting custom of burning the flower wreaths which were made on first of May. The fishermen's festival Celebratory festival in the Venetian Harbour, with free fish and wine on offer. Rich FLORA AND FAUNA as the climate and geomorphy of Rethymnon, and Crete generally, allow the existence of a large number of species, many of which are endemic to the island. As a result, the visitor may find natural treasures that have existed on the island for centuries and were depicted in Minoan frescoes such as the sea lily, sea turtles "caretta caretta" which lay their eggs on the beaches and may even see the Eleanora's falcon which migrates from Africa in the summer months. In the valleys, the visitor will come across, beautiful Fauna and Flora unique to Crete, dozens of varieties of wild flowers. The quick-eyed visitor may also spot hares, skunks, martens, hedgehogs, bats and many types of birds. In the semi-mountainous areas many birds of prey soar the blue skies. In the mountains amongst other varieties are the Cretan maple (acer sempervirens), the Cretan tulip (tulipa cretica), the yellow violet (erysimum raulini) etc. This is also the most important habitat for birds of prey as well as the Cretan wild goat and the thorn mouse (Amocos minus). In the wetlands of Geropotamos and Preveli, the visitor will encounter interesting fauna and flora, especially the latter, which includes the Cretan Palm tree (phoenix theophrastii). Lastly, in the gorges visitors can come across the famous Cretan dittany and other fragrant plants of Crete. Rethymno is a haven for walks, cyclists or just site seeing!!!
The town offers all the touristy facilities needed as well as lively bars and clubs and various restaurants and excellent taverns.
Rethymno has regular bus services to the main towns and villages of the entire prefecture.

Found the villa well furnished and clean. Great mattress in the master bedroom. The property manager met us at the villa and did a very nice introduction to the villa and area. The Kids really enjoyed the large pool for their games. I would advise bringing lots of sun screen as we found July very hot and we had to take care not to over do the sunbathing. It was a short walk for the kids to the beach. We would recomend the taverna next to the beach. Rethymno with the old town was fantastic to walk in and dine out at night. We will be back hopefully soon. |

We contacted the advertiser/property manager, Dean Spyropoulos, about the villa's availability and had an email response 2-3 days later. We decided to go ahead with the booking, although payment was only by bank transfer - credit/debit cards are not accepted. We were initially a little sceptical about this, but it all seemed to go OK and in fact we spoke to Dean on the phone beforehand (he rang us to reassure us and also go over a few details about the property). He sent us directions to the villa and also his contact number to ring when we arrived in Crete. We phoned him after picking up our rental car at the airport and again once we'd arrived at the villa, so he could meet us there to give us the keys and a quick tour of the villa. He also gave us recommendations for some nice beaches on the south coast and also some local places to eat. The villa is set in a 'compound' of other newly-built villas, many of which were fairly quiet whilst we were there (Sept 2011) so maybe mostly holiday villas. There is an electric gate to go through, on the road leading up to the villa, and a car port outside the villa itself (a slightly steep hill to drive down to it, which we quickly got used to). NB. this electric gate has a remote control you can use, that's provided inside the villa, to save you getting out to type the numbers into the keypad each time. However, on our final morning there, there was a power cut and the controls for the gate didn't work! I was terrified we'd be trapped and miss our plane but we phoned Dean and he sent a workman out to manually open it, in time thankfully. However I understand that power cuts are reasonably common and can last for a few hours. The villa itself is lovely, fairly well-equipped and having a private pool and sun terrace was bliss. The pool could be a bit chilly sometimes but was around 21-23 degrees C each day. You get nice sunsets over the hills across to the west. There was a small supermarket about 1/4 mile away, across the other side of the gorge, but it wasn't that well-stocked and was a bit expensive, so we mostly bought food from either Lidl (on the road/junction to Rethymno) or the shops found on a strip of hotels/restaurants etc. a few miles to the west, on the coast road (Paralia Kourna). Incidentally, this is probably also the nearest decent/large beach to the villa too - there is one below the villa, accessed via the road/back under the road bridge, but it's quite small and only gets the sun for part of the day. There is also a small restaurant there too, right on the seafront, but it was very quiet when we went (our first night there) and the menu was a bit limited, although quite tasty food and good value for money. The area also has a certain amount of road noise, since the main E75 road runs close by. Some days seemed noisier than others but it could be difficult to tune out completely. I guess it depends what you're used to (and whether you're indoors or outside by the pool) but I imagine some people might find it a bit intrusive at times. We were concerned that the pool might be a bit overlooked but it wasn't that bad actually - this is one of the better-positioned villas in the compound. We were a bit taken aback that the advertised 'satellite TV' was mostly non-English-speaking and only a couple of channels (a music channel and BBC World) were in English. We checked with Dean and he said that this was correct, and was how the owners had set it up - so no chance to change it at all. However, there was wifi internet access in the villa, which we didn't expect, so we could still get online, although not able to access iPlayer content etc. due to broadcasting restrictions. There was maid service and also a pool cleaner once a week (although not always appearing at the time of day Dean said they would!). The rest of the villa was generally fine, nothing in particular to comment on. Overall it was a lovely villa with good facilities (except the TV channels!). Location-wise, it was OK but would strongly suggest you have a car - also be aware of the noise from the road. We would recommend it and would consider going back another year. Recommended restaurants: Taverna Romantika, Paralia Kourna - try the rabbit stifado. Recommended places to visit: Lake Kourna - go out in a pedalo. Samaria Gorge - the long way (you'll feel superior to those who did it 'the lazy way'). The Fortezza at Rethymno. Skinaria beach on the south coast - there is good snorkelling here, also try the pastitsio at the nearby Libyan Star taverna (N.B. this is a nudist-friendly beach - try the eastern end of the beach if that's your thing). Response: Pay pal has been set up , the satellite television has been set up to provide a few channels to cover most nationalities, Bearing in mind all the local channels feature many English movies with Greek subtitles. The beach which s a few minutes walk is a very popular beach as it is sheltered from the wind and does get sun for most of the day. The sun sets over that beautiful cove so it wouldn't get the last bit of the sun setting which you can estimate would be around 9 in the evening. |
