The Crete region
Western Crete is famed for its natural beauty with towering mountains, deep gorges, olive and orange groves and a coastline with steep cliffs and fine beaches. It is also a walkers paradise with over 50 gorges in the White mountain range including the famed Samaria gorge. The region contains numerous archaeological sites including ancient Minoan palaces and cemeteries. On the North coast are the cities of Rethymnon and Chania both with Venetian harbours, museums and old narrow streets boasting shops and tavernas. On the South coast are numerous smaller fishing villages and fine beaches. The climate is Mediterranean characterized by mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers. The combination of rain and relative warmth make it one of the greenest places in the Mediterranean basin, especially in spring
Georgioupoli / Kournas Lake area
Situated just inland from Georgioupoli, Lake Kourna is the only natural fresh water lake on Crete. The lake shore is scattered with tavernas overlooking the lake and the backdrop of the white mountains beyond. Sun loungers, pedalos and kayaks are available for hire at the lake.
Georgioupoli is an attractive fishing village on the banks of the Almyros river. The village lies between the towns of Chania and Rethymnon and is easily accessible from the Northern Highway.
Georgioupolis has the longest beach on the north coast. An assortment of tavernas, bars and shops surround the village square. Famed for its high eucalyptus trees and friendly inhabitants it retains the feel of a traditional Greek village. Horse riding, children's play areas, boat trips and excursions are available.
Lake Kourna, the Almyrou delta and Georgioupoli beach are designated as important ornithological sites for breeding, migration and wintering waterbirds and passerines.
How to get there
By Air
Chania Airport - 40 minute drive Heraklion Airport - 1 hour 30 minute drive (note Heraklion is sometimes spelt Iraklion. In fact many Greek names have several translated spellings. Hania = Chania etc.).
Charter flights from Europe are quite numerous from April until the end of October. There are a lot more flights to Heraklion than to Chania, making them often cheaper (and not as heavily booked) than flights to Chania. Charter flights get cheaper as the departure date approaches however you do run the risk of not getting the flight you want, or in peek season any flight at all.
Easy Jet fly direct from Gatwick and Manchester to Heraklion.
Almost all scheduled international flights transit through Athens where you then take a scheduled domestic flight to either Chania or Heraklion. These are quite frequent (around 6 a day to Chania and more to Heraklion) and run by other companies beside the national carrier Olympic Airlines. Aegean Airlines usually offer the best fairs. Scheduled flights are cheapest if booked around 10-14 weeks before departure.
Transiting through Athens Athens is worth a stopover, at least once. You can continue your journey from Athens to Crete by plane or ferryboat from Piraeus. The new airport in Athens offers good public transport connections to the city centre as well as to the port of Piraeus.
