***Please note that if the dates you require are not available for Le Vieil Atelier, do consider Le Petit Bosquet ( ID 114338). Le Petit Bosquet does not have as many reviews because 2013 is the first year we will have accepted bookings - but it is on the same site as Le Vieil Atelier with equivalent facilities. In fact it is bigger - with a more contemporary decor style! ***

Le Vieil Atelier has been created from an old workshop and attic granary within a traditional 'Longere' Farmhouse which is part of a Lieu-Dit noted in the French Government Patrimoine (Heritage) lists; parts of the property are recorded as being built originally during the early 1600's, quite possibly during the reign of Louis XIV (The Sun King).

It is a very spacious cottage ideally suited for up to 4 persons, young or young at heart! With two double beds (one being a sofabed) in different rooms, if, as a platonic couple you prefer separate sleeping arrangements it is great for you too. We also have a Cot/Childs Bed, Stairgate, Highchair and accessories available for 1 small person (max height 115cm, approx. 5yrs).

An ideal base for extensive sightseeing, walking or cycling, golf or 'wine-hunting'. For those needing to rejuvenate their batteries with peace and quiet it is absolutely perfect. Surrounded by fields, often the only sounds are that of wildlife - and the countryside.

Virtually equidistant from three local towns, all boasting weekly markets, supermarkets and other modern amenities, the property is also ideally located for visiting the many and varied attractions of the Pays de la Loire including the cities of Le Mans, Angers, Nantes, Tours and Saumur with all they have to offer.

The cottage has been fully renovated and equipped to a high standard including cooking and dining facilities, whilst retaining as many of the historical features as we could. Unlike many rental properties, our furniture and fittings were bought new for the gites. It has a private enclosed rear garden, for the sole use of the gite occupants, a dedicated southerly facing 'Front Garden' area within the Courtyard and access to most of the rest of the surrounding gardens.

You enter the gite directly into the sympathetically renovated Salon with original exposed beams. Furnished with two large sofas, it has a large flat screen plasma TV with free-to-view UK satellite channels and French digital programmes. It also has a Blu-Ray DVD player and Hi-Fi with iPod/MP3 inputs. The larger of the two sofas converts into a double bed with sprung mattress so up to 4 adult guests may be accommodated - see rental details. For those with more traditional interests we also have a range of books, puzzles & games. Of course the dining table and 6 chairs are also in the salon.

The separate large kitchen is well equipped with plenty of crockery, cutlery and glasses and also with a food processor, scales, recipe books and various baking dishes for those who like to be creative when on holiday. There is a separate small kitchen table and 4 chairs in addition to those in the Salon. In addition to the facilities mentioned above there is also a slow cooker and deep fat fryer so you are not restricted to absolute basic cooking - unless you choose to be!

There is a downstairs WC - for convenient access from the garden or downstairs. Access to the private garden is through the sliding glass doors in the kitchen. Cleaning equipment and a clothes airer are also provided.

Upstairs, the spacious bedroom with exposed beams has plenty of storage and a desk. In front of the South facing full length (dormer) window with Juliette balcony, there are easy chairs and a coffee table, which overlook the Courtyard Rose garden and the countryside to the South of the property. The en-suite has a large walk-in shower. The cot is located in the bedroom.

Further details outdoors

The property is completely enclosed by fencing with gated access and extends to some 6500sq metres. It was an old Farmhouse with the surrounding outlying buildings resulting in a pleasing courtyard effect. There is plenty of 'off-road' parking and there are grassy areas to enjoy besides the areas allocated for the personal use of gite occupants.

Brand New for Summer 2013 - a small swimming pool, located in the courtyard, to the front of the house, available for your use.

There are two large areas of grass/meadow, one suitable for playing ball games etc.; the other has a number of young fruit trees which are developing into a mixed fruit orchard. The gite gardens (behind the house) have table and chairs, parasol and a BBQ provided. The property is surrounded on 3 sides by arable fields and a quiet local road passes by the front of the property, some 80 metres from the house.

Further details

Welcome gift on arrival. In addition, basic provisions such as tea, coffee, condiments, clingfilm, tin foil, toilet roll, washing fluid and dishwasher tablets to start you off are normally available.

Arriving late in the day? Let us get some shopping in for you so you can arrive relaxed and ready to holiday - please ask for details.

We are able to offer internet access via MiFi (mobile 'hotspot' using Orange 2G/3G signal)*; this is not included in the rental cost. Example cost - 10 Euros PAYG buys 7 days usage/1GB download.(plus 5 euros rental of the MiFi and 50 euros deposit) * NB the connection is subject to network availability - our property is in the middle of the countryside - although the signal is usually acceptable, you may need to take the MiFi to a nearby town to get a good connection. Once the PAYG fee is paid, the owners can accept no responsibility for the quality of the reception in the gites or elsewhere - this is the responsibility of Orange, the provider.

For our disabled, elderly or infirm guests: The house has not been especially adapted for wheelchair users, however, as both floors are flat and spacious, allowing room to manoeuvre it may suit those who have some mobility restriction. Please ask for further details.

We have mobile air conditioning units and fans for use when the temperatures are extremely high - however, with 80 cm thick old stone walls combined with modern insulation the interior of the house generally remains comfortable without the use of additional cooling aids.

The owners (and their house-pets) live in the main part of the building and will normally be here to welcome you and assist during your stay if required. Gardens (besides the private ones) may be shared with the owners. There are a number of outbuildings - old barns, pigsties, milking parlours etc . which have not yet been renovated.

About this location

The Pays de la Loire region

The Loire Valley is a UNESCO World heritage site. In choosing this area (the French departments of Loiret, Loir-et-Cher, Indre-et-Loire, and Maine-et-Loire), the (UNESCO) committee said that the Loire Valley is: "an exceptional cultural landscape, of great beauty, comprised of historic cities and villages, great architectural monuments - the Châteaux - and lands that have been cultivated and shaped by centuries of interaction between local populations and their physical environment, in particular the Loire itself."

Benefiting from its own micro climate , the Loire Valley is generally mild in the Winter and pleasantly hot in the Summer, remaining more temperate than its close neighbours.

Angers - the capital city of the Maine et Loire Department is also the ancient capital of the region of Anjou. Its roots can be traced to early Roman times but is probably best known as the historical birthplace of the House of Plantagenet, who ruled England from the 12th to 15th Century. It has many great places of historical, religious or cultural interest and lies about 45 minutes drive west of the Gite. The Chateau (inc. Apocalyse tapestries) with (optional) audio tour can itself take a whole afternoon to explore.

Le Mans - home of the world renowned 24hour Classic car race and rally is about 45 minutes drive North of Genneteil. Le Mans is reputed to have one of the most beautiful old quarters of any city in France, overlooked by the stunning cathedral. Le Mans offers plenty of sites of historic interest and also of local crafts such as Malicorne ceramics. It is probably fair to say that Le Mans is on the northernmost edge of the Pays de la Loire.

Tours - is famous as the centre for Touraine Wines and the nearby world famous Vouvray sparkling wines. Tours is famous for its original medieval district, called 'le Vieux Tours'. Unique to the Old City are its preserved half-timbered buildings which surround la Place Plumereau, a square with busy pubs and restaurants, whose open-air tables fill the centre of the square. We also found the Town Hall and Tours Central Railway Station rather magnificent - all under an hour south east of the house.

Saumur - Approximately 45 minutes due South of the house by car, Saumur is the home of the Cadre Noir (National Riding School) and the Tank Museum, as a result of it's long association with the French Military. High above the town a wonderful Chateau overlooks the Loire River, housing dungeons, a watchtower and former royal apartments, and a particularly interesting 'Museum of the Horse', all open to the public. Saumur claims to have been the place where sparkling wine was invented. Whilst it doesn't have the global 'kudos' of Champagne, in our opinion the local 'Methode Traditionelle' wines compare very well to their more expensive cousins. This includes a Red sparkling wine, recommended to be eaten with Dark Chocolate; an acquired taste but worth trying! Also to be found along the river nearby are Museums dedicated to the Mushroom and to the (edible) Snail - a French delicacy.

Le Loir Valley - the less well known of the river valleys; it has been commented upon by our guests that exploring the villages, sights and surroundings up and down the Loir valley has proven to be an unexpected delight. The towns of La Fleche and Le Lude (a mere 10-15 minutes N of the house) straddle Le Loir.

Genneteil is well placed - if it were a mountain, it would be the peak! Major Cities, autoroutes and good transport links (including rail and air) surround Genneteil on all sides - essentially less than 1 hour in any direction. Genneteil has at its heart a Norman Church, only now used for special occasions such as Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals, although it does have some beautiful ancient frescoes which were found a few years ago and restored recently. The church acts as a roundabout of sorts connecting the roads coming from all directions. Essentially a rural community, Genneteil has no particular claim to fame (except its history) but the locals are very friendly - especially if you take the opportunity to practice your French!

Genneteil has a dairy from which you can purchase fresh milk, cream, yogurts and other dairy products.

There is so much to see and do that it is difficult to know where to start! There are around 1000 Chateaux and many other sites of historical interest but also extensive orchards, world famous Zoos, Rose gardens, Geological sites and last but not least the Loire valley vineyards and wines.

Our house manual details some of the more local, quirky and lesser known places of interest, including a tour of the local lavoirs (ancient clothes washing sites), ancient stone megaliths, twisted spires (Clocher Tors) and details of many local restaurants, chateaux, walking and cycling routes and locations for fishing, riding etc.. We have also provided a selection of tourist brochures and leaflets across a wide spectrum of interests. You need to come & stay to get a real feel for what is available - and we are sure you won't be disappointed!.

"Lovely gîte, all mod cons, quiet and peaceful area."

Very welcoming. Very well equipped and comfortable gite. Well situated for 3 market towns and close to both Loire and Loir valleys for wine tasting. Sadly no tabac restaurant or shop in the village a… More

We are very pleased that P & M enjoyed their stay and found the tranquility they were looking for. We agree, it is a great shame about our local bar/restaurant but as with most rural 'ouvrier' restaurants it would only open at lunchtime on weekdays anyway and the bar closes by about 7pm if not earlier. We are still hoping that the restaurant/bar/shop/tabac will come under new ownership in the near future. However, this lack of facilities within walking distance is one reason why we offer a very well equipped kitchen, including fryer and slow cooker and also a good quality BBQ so that people can stay 'at home' and enjoy the evenings (and some of the local 'tipple') !

"Don't delay book NOW"

We had very high expectations for this Gite after looking at the photos and reviews, all I can say is that without doubtour expectations were surpassed. This gite has been thought through through to the ultimate degree, there is NOTHING you could want for, all the media (TV, blu ray & Hifi) are panasonic, the sat TV is better than I recieve at home. The kitchen has more appliances/facilities than you could wish for oh the owners are ab fab. Just ask them about places to visit/places to eat there recommendations are first rate.

The location is rural and peaceful but central to 5 great towns within 15 mins drive.

This is the second gite we have stayed in in France and 1000% better than the other we WILL return to stay again.

It is really lovely to have such fabulous reviews (personal ones too). Please do as suggested and book now!

"Peaceful retreat with everything you need, and more!..."

We've just spent our second holiday at Le Vieil Atelier near Genneteil and think it was even better than last time round! What makes this gite so appealing is the fact that it has all the facilities you need, great location with wonderful views, peace and quiet, close to historical towns and cities, fabulous local wines, and really lovely owners who live on site and can't do enough to ensure you have a truly enjoyable holiday.

The gite is very modern inside and has really excellent facilities and is spotlessly clean. The private garden has a great view over to the local village of Genneteil and the pretty church. The addition this year of a above-ground pool was a god-send as the weather was scorchingly hot but regular dips in the pool cooled us down.

The peace and quiet was wonderful and walks into the village and surrounding countryside was just beautiful. We really can't recommend this holiday enough, you will quickly forget about your work life and switch off completely and relax - I'm sure it won't be long before we're back again!

Thank you so much for the wonderful review. We are very glad that the new pool was appreciated. We are considering upgrading it to a bigger one for next year! We look forward to seeing M & M again one day.

"Great relaxing break"

We stayed at Le Vieil Atelier at the very end of June 2013. We had a lovely relaxing break -just what we needed. We didn't travel too far mostly just enjoying the peace and quiet at the gite. The gite must be the best equipped and well furnished that we have stayed in. If we were to return to this area of France we would have no hesitation in booking here again - and have brought several of Lis and Mike's postcards home to supply to any friends looking for somewhere similar.
Lis welcomed us with home made jam and cake and a lovely bottle of sparkling wine - just the way to start the holiday - and we enjoyed some of the homegrown raspberries while we were there. Many thanks Lis and Mike for your hospitality.

We are so glad these guests enjoyed their stay. I can't promise cake every time, but there is usually a little treat awaiting our guests arrival!

"Le Vieil Atelier was perfect - one of the best equipped gites we have stayed in"

Le Vieil Atelier was spacious, well modernised with a very well equipped kitchen and a pleasant enclosed garden to the rear. The village of Genneteil, where there is bar and small shop, was within easy walking distance. Also a dairy on the outskirts of the village. The owners, Lis and Mike, could not have been more welcoming and helpful and did everything to make our stay truly enjoyable.

Thank you for the kind comments, we do try to ensure that all our guests remember us for the right reasons!

These customers actually stayed in Le Vieil Atelier which is one part of the two properties that make up Les Jumeaux. Nevertheless, the comments are valid for both gites and of course the area. Many thanks for your kind words.

"A wonderful, spacious, fully equipped gite in the Loire Valley"

We had a very enjoyable time at Le Vieil Atelier in September, 2012. The accommodations, with the living room, dining area and kitchen on the first floor and the lovely bedroom and shower on the second floor were spacious and modern. The fully equipped, eat in kitchen, with access to the fenced in private garden, allowed us to cook wonderful meals while quaffing the Loire Valley wines from the many wineries (including biologiques) that were within easy travel distances. Because we needed quiet and privacy to finish a book for publication, we found Le Vieil Atelier to be perfect. The owners, Lis & Mike, were always friendly, helpful and never intrusive. We are delighted to recommend this gite!

Thank you J & G for your wonderful comments. Just one point to future potential clients - wifi access is only available under exceptional circumstances and at our absolute discretion. The reason is that we are in the middle of the countryside, some distance from the exchange so we do not have a very good bandwidth and we require what there is for work. This is why our advert says that we do not offer wifi.

Although we stayed at Le Viel Atelier over a year ago it is still vivid in our memories! The house is perfect - so thoughtfully renovated and beautifully equipped with everything you would need for a … More

Thank you D & J for your wonderful review. I can confirm that the garden has been improved since your last visit, it is now full enclosed and has some plants and flowers to make it more attractive. It also gets weekly attention from the lawnmower in season, but otherwise is 'low maintenance'. It is still a 'new' garden, it takes a while for shrubbery and plants to establish themselves but of course it is a never ending task to keep the weeds away but we do have more grass now than there was in 2011!
We look forward to welcoming you back sometime soon.

"What a find!"

We all really enjoyed our stay at Le Vieil Atelier. A spacious, recently renovated gite, surrounded by fields, beautiful!

Lis and Mike were welcoming hosts, on hand to offer their advice on excursions out, local knowledge and ensure that we were comfortable during our stay. They have taken time and trouble to put together their own guide to the local area, which we found really useful. There is so much to see and do nearby a second trip is certainly on the cards!

Holidaying with a small child (10 months) for the first time was a daunting prospect but they really had thought of everything, from an abundance of cot linen to a selection of plastic bowls / plates, highchair and a stair gate! Elsewhere in the gite we were also impressed that they really had thought of it all, a decent corkscrew, sharp knives for cooking and a store of kitchen basics, homemade jam, we really felt looked after!

5 stars in our opinion, you won't be disappointed!

Dear C , M and of course H. Thank you for the wonderful review. We welcome children to our home, especially having recently become grandparents ourselves. However, families travelling with children should note our policy on children now that both our gites are available. It is the case that not everyone wants to be in the proximity of children on holiday so we have a policy of 'first come first served' on the individual bookings. Of course combined bookings for both gites by the same party do not have any restriction on the ages of our visitors. Hopefully this means that our prospective clients know what to expect before they book and have the choice where it is relevant.
