About the home

Les Deux Châtaigniers is a large Charentaise house in the traditional bastide style. The house is divided into two wings, each with fully-fitted kitchen and living and dining rooms. The house has 4 double bedrooms and 4 twin bedrooms, each with en-suite bathrooms. Each wing sleeps 11 people, with a maximum of 22 people in total.

Set within a private vineyard, each wing has outdoor dining facilities under covered terrace areas - complete with barbecue. The private swimming pool looks out onto the vines.

Located in the quiet and peaceful hamlet of Rancannes, yet only ten minutes drive from the busy & bustling town of Gemozac. The house has easy access to all amenities, including the local market which runs every Friday, the sandy beaches of the Atlantic, and many excellent restaurants for eating out.

An ideal location for family holidays with children.

The open plan ground floor of each wing contains a fully fitted American kitchen. The kitchen opens onto a large living area (13m x 8.5m) furnished with comfortable seating around a large stone fireplace with a separate dining area seating up to 12 people. There is also a downstairs toilet and separate laundry room.

The gite offers over 800 sq m of accommodation and is furnished in a simple, comfortable and contemporary style with stone floors on the ground floor and wood floors on the upper floor.

There are both covered terrace areas for outdoor dining and shade from the sunshine, and patio areas around the pool to enjoy the vineyard view. Outdoor areas are equipped with tables, chairs and barbecues, whilst the pool area has comfortable deck chairs to enjoy the sunshine.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region

Les Deux Châtaigniers is located in the South West of France in the Charente Maritime about 30 minutes from the long, sandy beaches of the Atlantic and benefits from a micro climate that makes it one of the sunniest parts of France.

The Gemozac area

Nearby highlights, apart from the wonderful coastline, include Cognac (about 40 minutes), Saintes (30 minutes), Royan (30 minutes), La Rochelle (1 hour), the zoo at La Palmyre (1 hour) and Bordeaux (1 hour). The nearest towns are Gemozac (10 minutes) which has a regular Friday market and Pons (10 minutes) which has a twice weekly market. Both towns also have good supermarkets and general shopping. Pons has a fine 2 star Michelin restaurant. The nearest boulangerie and general small shop are in Champagnolles – about 3 minutes away in a car.

The area is known for its vines that produce primarily cognac and the local speciality Pineau de Charentes. If you are here when our own grapes are ripe you are very welcome to try them yourself – they are very good indeed.

* Fly to either La Rochelle or Bordeaux - Les Deux Chataigniers is approximately an hour's drive from each airport.
* Cheap flights available from Ryanair.com from Stansted to La Rochelle and from Easyjet.co.uk for Luton to Bordeaux. Flybe.com also flies from a number of UK locations.

* Car hire is available at both airports.
* By boat - St Malo is appox. 5 hours drive; Caen about 6.5 hours; and Calais about 8 hours.
