The Poitou-Charentes region
The Charente-Maritime is situated on the south-west coast of France and enjoys the long hot summers and very mild winters so necessary for the production of the fine grapes used to make the wonderful wines of the Bordeaux region and the Cognac and Pineau, local specialities. In fact the area has the second highest number of hours of sunshine in France, second only to the area on the Mediterranean. (It is known locally as the "Western Mediterranean"!)
There are many places of historic interest in the area including the principal town Saintes, which dates back to Roman times and boasts a fine amphitheatre and the Arc de Germanicus dating from 18AD. Probably the most important feature of Saintes is the Charente River which flows through the town on its 360km journey from its source, passing through the towns of Angouleme, Cognac, Saintes, Rochefort and finally to the Atlantic. Cognac is about 30 minutes from the cottage where you can explore the Hennessey factory and amble along the pretty cobbled streets, or you can spend the day at St Emilion, sampling the famous fine wines of the locality. Both the thriving cities of La Rochelle and Bordeaux are an hour away on the A10.
The cottage lies on the edge of a small hamlet, 15 minutes rom the Gironde Estuary with beautiful sandy beaches at Meschers and St Georges de Didonne. It is within easy reach of over 300 miles of coastline, spectacular sandy beaches backed by pine forests and lively resorts. La Rochelle, Royan and the islands of Oleron, Aix and Re provide year round interest and both Oleron and the beaches north of Royan have superb surfing beaches. A must-see is the pretty village of Talmont which lies on the Estuary, where cars are banned and the cobbled streets are lined with artisan shops and hollyhocks! A little closer to home you can walk or cycle the quiet lanes through the vineyards and fields of sunflowers. There are many activities available locally including golf (there are many golf courses in the area including the excellent 18 holf courses at Fontcouverte), watersports and horse-riding and during the spring and summer the area hosts many fetes and festivals. There are 4 tennis courts and an open-air swimming pool at Gemozac and 20 minutes away at Jonzac you will find Les Antilles de Jonzac (www.lesantillesdejonzac.com), a fabuous tropical lagoon (both indoor and outdoor) for family fun.
There is a wide choice of restaurants and bars within easy reach, the estuary fishing villages at Mortagne and Port Maubert both have excellent seafood restaurants, or for fine dining in superb surroundings try the Moulin de la Valle de Seune at Mosnac or La Roze on the Gemozac road to Pons. Or for cooking up something special on a summer's evening why not try the local markets, particularly at Cozes which is held in the ancient marketplace. Here you will find fresh fruit and vegetables, cheeses, meat and plenty of the local seafood. Saintes also has street markets twice a week and on the first Monday of each month the entire boulevard section of the town is closed for a large street market. 10 minutes from the cottage, Gemozac has an excellent supermarket (with a very good fish stall), boulangeries, charcuteries, a post office, 2 petrol stations and all the usual amenities, including good restaurants and a take-away pizzeria.

"A great house in a lovely location"
We stayed at L'Atelier for a couple of weeks and had a fabulous holiday. The property was very well equipped and extremely comfortable - a real home from home. The local village was very quaint. We travelled around the area and found some wonderful places to visit, such as Cognac, Mortagne, Royan, Tolmont and St George de Didonne. All in all, a great holiday with L'Atelier being the perfect base from which to explore the area.

"Delightful holiday home in rural Charente"
We stayed with our grown up daughter for a week and we all enjoyed the comforts of Sally's holiday home. St Germaine is in a delightful area and convenient to visit the Gironde coast towns and cities of the region. The house is well equipped for self catering all the delights of the local markets. There are also some lovely places to eat out in the area our firm favourite for a special occasion was The Domaine Du Seudre wonderful setting and cuisine. The old post office was also enjoyed one evening.

L'Atelier was very well placed for visiting the surrounding area, it is a quiet attractive house in a very pleasant garden within a small village, however we arrived during fete weekend and had a lovely time, the hose has everything one needs for a relaxing holiday, and the furnishings were comfortable and attractive, There are many lovely restaurants especially L Artist in Champagnolles, a delight, not very often you find a jewel !!!

"Great success !"
The house is fantastically well equipped and felt very homely. The attention to detail provided by Sally made the start of the holiday very easy. WIFI with 3 teenagers in the group was clearly a hit but also proved very useful to access local information. The region is a tapestry of fantastic opportunities catering well for the varied interests of everyone. Some of our highlights were Ile d'Oleron, the beaches around Meschers, La Rochelle (Waterfront, food, shopping, museums and markets), Royan (Sunday market is brilliant). The restaurants are fantastic with standards of fish and seafood as good as anywhere in the World. The restaurant "La vielle Post" in the next village is a must as well as starting the day with a bit of local gossip at the baker in the same village. No doubt we will be back for more !

"Home from home"
Lovely house in a central location. We enjoyed staying in this house, it had everything we needed and a very well facilitated kitchen. You got the impression that this is not just a holiday home, but a well loved home from home. Lovely beaches in the surrounding areas, our favourite being Merchers beach. Had some lovely bbqs in the enclosed, private garden beside the colourful hollyhocks.

"A BEAUTIFULLY EQUIPPED AND FURNISHED HOUSE WITH A VERY QUIET, PLEASANT AREA BUT ONLY A FEW MINUTES AWAY FROM SHOPS ETC"
Places to visit Pons, Saintes and Le Rochelle which find where interesting. Plenty of restaurants to try one only being 1 mile down the road The roads are very quiet so the bikes are a nice touch to explore with.

"Little secret tucked away"
The house is perfectly located for exploring north, south, east and west by car or train. We bought a two day train ticket and headed to La Rochelle and Angouleme (visit the cartoon museum and spot the cartoon murals dotted round town, impressive). Beaches worth going to are Merschers, St George de Didonne, Les Antilles at Jonzac is expensive but worthwhile but the wave pool is possibly only open after the school day has finished so check in advance. With the introduction of the Internet this is possible and really opens up more possibilities for exploring. Finally if there is a local event going on on the weekends go and explore. We went to Plassac and the French version of Total Wipeout was the central event. A lot of fun!!

"Ideal location for all the attractions"
We found this holiday home to be ideal for all our needs, home from home really. Royan was only a short drive and had lovely beaches and resturants, also a big Sunday market. There is a large supermarket in Gemonac which sells everything, good selection of wines!! We loved the area overall and having such a nice place to stay in made it all the more special.
