L'Ecurie du Puits
About the home
L'ecurie du Puits is a very welcoming, home from home which provides all you need for a break, however long, in this wonderful area of France. The gite is very well equipped. The bathroom has a bath, which is great for a soak after a day in the sun, plus an over bath shower - what more could you ask for? I know, a hot tub! Sorry, but in the Tumbledown, our favourite place and a sun trap, we do have a 12 ft splash pool which is perfect for cooling off on a really hot day and we have many days like that here. The living area of the gite is cozy and the kitchen has everything you need to make life easy, including gas cooker, fridge/freezer and washing machine. There is an outside terrace in the enclosed back garden, with barbecue to allow you to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible during your stay. You have everything on site to enjoy a relaxing time in this calm, quite Hamlet in the Charente Maritime plus many interesting places to visit a mere 25 minutes away if you feel the need to travel. The owners are on hand most of the time should you have any questions during your stay.

BookThe Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
The Gironde Estuary is only 25 minutes away, with its beautiful beaches stretching from Meschers, Royan to La Palmyre and beyond, also 25 minutes from Cognac and Saintes. Ideally situated for every kind of holiday break with plenty to see and do. There is so much history in the area dating back to Roman times, many wonderful churches and historical sites to visit - leaflets in the gite on arrival.
The wonderful wines of Bordeaux can be tasted at many chateaux in the area, also a day trip to the Medoc to sample the most amazing wines from the Grand Cru chateaux. Pineau, the local speciality has to be tried and we are happy to accompany you to the local chateau to experience this.
L'Ecurie is close to 3 golf course, Royan, Saintes and Cognac - so perfect for a golfing break.
The Gemozac / La Foy area
Gemozac has all the amenities you need on holiday. The supermarket is 3 km in the car, but you can walk or cycle which takes a little longer, then you rest at Le Lion d'Or for a coffee or something stronger before you return slowly to L'Ecurie du Puits. There are 3 bakers in the village and the bread van visits L'Ecurie most days bringing bread and pastries. You can also find a pharmacy, delicatessen, newspaper shop - where you can also buy cigarettes, florist and a few other interesting shops.
The market is on a Friday morning and on the 3rd Friday of every month the market doubles in size and becomes a "foire" and you can find chickens and other livestock for sale. Wonderful to see and experience the sites and smells of a French market.
The local pizzeria is great for eat in or takeaway and also serves food other than pizza. Le Lion d'Or is the newly refurbished hotel and has a lovely restaurant in the town square. La Caravelle is another good restaurant in Gemozac. The outdoor swimming pool is open from June to August and has slides and plenty of space to sunbathe around the pool. There is also a childrens playground and tennis courts.
A hidden gem, situated behind a 'maison de maitre' in the centre of Gemozac is a race course. Horse racing takes place this year on the 10th and 24th June, 15th and 28th of July and the 15th August. A really good fun day out for all the family with barbecue, bar, pony rides and childrens area. Wonderful place to observe the local people having a great time.
Cognac hosts the Blues Festival from 3rd to 8th July - featuring Tom Jones, Sting and Hugh Laurie as star turns with many other bands playing in many bars in the centre of town.
July 14th is Bastille Day and you will be able to find superb firework displays in most towns and villages.
On Royan beach from 23rd to 27th July you can experience wonderful open air concerts with full orchestra which end with a firework display. Thousands of people take their chairs, rugs and picnics and enjoy the pre concert atmosphere every year - definitely not an event to miss.
August 15th is also a public holiday and once again many wonderful firework displays happen.
Throughout July and August there is always something to do in most of the surrounding towns and villages.

The gite was very comfortable with all the necessary amenities. Outside was a lovely garden complete with plunge pool. The gite was ideally situated in a peaceful rural area yet within easy reach of many local attractions including beautiful beaches, the lovely towns of Royan, Talmont, Saintes, Cognac, and the La Palmyre Zoo. Paul and Kathy were excellent hosts always available to provide helpful advice and suggestions. |

This is such a lovely place. The gite is very well maintained and certainly has everything you need, including games, DVDs, books etc in case you have an 'indoors' day. There are also sun loungers, garden games and an outdoor seating area available if you just want to relax or have alfresco meals. The location of this gite is perfect as you are surounded by fields, which make for lovely walks or a 20 minute drive to a range of beaches, (which are all just lovely and clean), as well as historical villages and towns with markets usually on everyday somewhere. A little further and you find busier towns and lots of shopping! A welcome pack is provided that gives you what you need as a start - this was so lovely as it meant we didn't have to rush out to get shopping. We had such a great time here not only relaxing, but exploring and meeting some great people. It's surprising just how much France has to offer once you go looking! We visited beaches, Congac - The Henessey Factory, historical towns, St Emillion being the absolute prettiest with Aubterre a close second. There are chateau's aplenty of which you can arrange a visit to taste their wonderful Pinot. There's horse-riding, canoeing, spa, leisure centre and fishing to name but a few activities close by. We were advised of some restaurants, which were delicious. I could go on and on, but it's better if you just visit yourself. The owners are just wonderful and can't help enough if you need it. They have lots of information and great advice. We had to take my husband to hospital whilst staying there and they were truly a godsend, particularly as their french is so very good. Not only did they take us to the hospital, but waited with us to ensure all was ok and translated where necessary. We can't wait to go back! |
