La Belle Etoile
About the home
La Belle Etoile,a beautiful 300 year old stone built Normandy farmhouse for holidays near Gavray, between Granville, Coutances and Villedieu-les-Poeles & Avranches with 3 bedrooms, sleeps 7 and a baby, set in an acre of gardens, with a glorious panorama to the west over the valley, and brilliant sunsets.
We have had excellent feedback over the years - families including the young and the old seem to very much enjoy our house and all it has to offer.
The property is situated on a “chemin rurale” making it safe for children, and ideally situated for those who wish to walk or bike off road. The area has many interests available including horse riding, fishing, swimming, sailing, surf-boarding, canoeing and tennis.
The house is comfortable and well equipped with a gas hob and oven, microwave, toaster, dishwasher, iron and ironing board, washing machine and tumble dryer et cetera.
There is a games room with a pool table, “baby football” and some general games. The games room is a great hit with all age groups and ideal on the occasional rainy day.
There is colour television in the salon and in the kitchen - with BBC1, BBC2, ITV and Channel 4, DVD and video recorder.
There are wifi and wired internet connections in most of the house.
The house has central heating, a wonderful open fire in the kitchen and a wood burner in the salon.
Gavray is 3 kilometres away and has 3 bakers, a supermarket, a chemist, a dentist, a medical centre with 3 doctors (one speaks very good English), a butcher, a charcuterie (who also does take away meals), 2 restaurants, several bars and a number of other interesting shops.
The house is situated between the historic towns of Avranches, Granville, Coutances and Villedieu-les-Poeles and within 40 minutes of Le Mont St. Michel and Bayeux. Both Brittany and the Normandy landing beaches are an easy “day trip” from the house, as are the beautiful sandy western coastal beaches where you can walk for miles.

Directions for coming to La Belle Etoile from Cherbourg
The easiest thing to remember is that the route to La Belle Etoile is the same as the route to Le Mont St. Michel – signed all the way on GREEN boards, starting at the exit of the port. You leave the Le Mont St Michel signs at Coutances (point 6 below).
1. On leaving the port there is a large roundabout with a petrol station on the far left. This is the best place to fill up in Cherbourg but you need a French bank card for this, otherwise Auchun is a very good price but complicated to find. It’s at the exit of Cherbourg, right at the top of the hill, in an area called “La Glacerie”).
2. At this first roundabout go straight over. The petrol station will be on your left. Follow the GREEN signposts for Le Mont St Michel.
3. Follow the GREEN signs out of Cherbourg for “Le Mont St Michel”. This involves climbing a long hill (several kilometers) at the top of which there is a roundabout (right here for Auchun supermarket) where you will turn left onto the N13. Go approximately 20 kilometres and when you have just passed VALOGNES take the turning for Le Mont St Michel onto the D2 (signposted in GREEN).
4. Stay on the D2 until COUTANCES, passing through the towns (or on their by passes) of St. Sauveur le Vicomte (nice castle the right, little roundabout, go straight over), La Haye-du-Puits (by-pass), Lessay and then to Coutances, always still following the GREEN signposts for to Le Mont St Michel.
5. At Coutances follow the signs to Le Mont St Michel until you join a road with 3 (2 up and 1 down) lanes coming down a long hill.
6. At the bottom of the hill (various supermarkets and factories on the area) you leave the green Le Mont St Michel signs when you reach the roundabout, with a restaurant, L’Auberge du Viaduc, on the far side. Take second exit, on to the D7. The signpost will be for Gavray (15 kilometres).
7. Go right through Gavray, staying on the D7.
8. As you leave Gavray there is quite a sharp bend to the right and then the road climbs. About 2/3 kilometres out of Gavray there is a sharpish bend to the left with a large house on the right hand side, shortly after which there is a crossroads. Turn left here onto the D33 (please remember to keep on the right at this junction!!! And climb the hill.
9. La Belle Etoile is the second lane on the right just before the top of the hill. It is not sign posted but there is a sign that says something like “Le depot d’ordures est fermé….” The turning turns quite sharply back on itself.
10. Go 500 metres down the lane, there is a house on the left, which is not ours, and another 100 metres further on, on the right and set back is La Belle Etoile.
Directions for coming to La Belle Etoile from CAEN (OUISTREHAM)
1. Follow the blue signs for the A13 and Autres Directions to the autoroute.
2. Once you reach the autoroute follow the signs for Rennes. You will take the périphérique/ring road around Caen, still following signs for Rennes.
3. At Junction 9 you turn on to the A84/E401 which you stay on for approximately 50 minutes – 1 hour.
4. Come off the A84 at Exit 37, Granville and Gavray.
5. At the first roundabout take right turn signposted Le Mesnil Garnier, (D33).
6. Follow this road going through Le Mesnil Garnier. About 4-5 kms after Le Mesnil Garnier you will reach a small junction with a signpost saying Catte sur Cat – this junction is on a bend to the left (the sign taking you off the road is for GAVRAY – do not take that). Follow this bend round to the left, and approximately 100-200 metres after the junction you will see a small turning to the left (it is the first one after the bend). . It is not sign posted but there is a sign that says something like “Le depot d’ordures est fermé….” .
7. Go 500 metres down the lane, there is a house on the left, which is not ours, and another 100 metres further on, on the right and set back is La Belle Etoile.
Directions for coming from LE HAVRE
1 As you leave the port follow the signs for Toutes Directions. The first petrol station on the right has good petrol prices – it’s a BP – you can use any nationality cards in there. (Total is before and on the left but is very expensive).
2 Very shortly you will start to see signs for Paris and Rouen.
3 Near the end of the built up area of Le Havre you will start to signs for Caen. There are a number of changes of autoroute but always follow the signs for Caen.
4 Take the périphérique sud around Caen, following signs for Rennes. Then follow instructions as from point 3 from Caen.
Directions for coming from DIEPPE
1 As you leave the port follow the signs up the hill towards Rouen at Paris. Do not go into Dieppe unless you are feeling brave. You will be probably following signs saying Toutes Directions.
2 Very shortly you will start to see signs for Paris and Rouen. Eventually (about 10 km later you will arrive at some traffic lights) you will join the N27. and eventually after probably 20 – 30 km you will take the A29 for LE HAVRE. This is a paying autoroute – when you get to the check through point just take a ticket – you pay at the other end. Just follow the signs for Le Havre until you come down a long hill (after about 80 kms) and you will see the industrial area of Le Havre below. At this point stay in the middle lane and DO NOT GO INTO LE HAVRE. Instead follow the signs for Pont de Normandie and CAEN.
3 There are a number of changes of autoroute but always follow the signs for Caen.
4 Take the périphérique sud around Caen, following signs for Rennes. Then follow instructions as from point 3 from Caen.
Directions for coming from SAINT MALO
Come out of the port and at the first immediate roundabout follow “Toutes directions”. Go over the second roundabout and keep in the right hand lane. Turn right at the third roundabout to go up the hill. At one stage there is a set of traffic lights – be careful to stay in the left hand lane so that you don’t filter off to the right. At the roundabout straight over following the main drag out of Saint Malo following directions Dol / Rennes. At the next roundabout straight over and then you come to the main roundabout at the exit of Saint Malo. Be careful here. Basically continue straight over sign posts for Dol / Rennes on the N137.
After about 10km you will need to turn off in the area of Châteauneuf-d'Ille-et-Vilaine. BE CAREFUL THERE ARE MAJOR ROADWORKS IN THIS AREA – always follow the Dol/Caen signs in case of being diverted.
You are joining the N176 at this point – be very very careful as currently you turn in a big loop and climb up to the N176 and come to a STOP sign. Make sure you stop here as it is a very fast road. You will turn right onto the N176 which then turns into the N175 …. But once you get on the road at Châteauneuf-d'Ille-et-Vilaine the next 70km or so is easy and on the same road – despite its name changes. Most of the road is dual carriageway but be careful on the first bit and around Pontorson where it is two way. You will go past Dol, Pontorson and Avranches …. always following signs for Caen. Once you have passed Avranches the road becomes the A84. Take the A84 and leave it at junction 37 (about 20km along the A84).
Leave the autoroute at junction 37 and come down to the roundabout, take the third exit off the roundabout, signposted Granville and go under the motorway. At the next roundabout turn first right signposted Le Mesnil Garnier. Go straight over the next roundabout and then go to point 6 of the instructions from CAEN.
