Villa Rodi (Greek for Pomegranate) is a modern well-equipped three-bedroomed villa with its own private pool. The villa is situated on the edge of and overlooking the ancient village of Gavalohori. Behind the villa is a woodland area with several footpaths to walk and enjoy. The villa is well suited for both families and adults alike looking for a private relaxing holiday. The villa is securely walled with its own private parking space and a mature garden containing several trees some of which provide shading near the pool. Gavalohori village is within a few minutes walk and has several tavernas, general stores and a bakery that makes the best bread in the world every morning!
The resort of Almyrida is a few minutes away by car or some 35 minutes walk. It has a beautiful large sandy bay with clear shallow waters that extend well into the bay making it very safe for young children. There are many tavernas in Almyrida with some larger supermarkets, wineries, general stores, jewellers, beach wear and bakers. There are many footpaths and forest tracks in the area for those who enjoy safe and easy walking.
The villa has been extensively furnished with traditional Cretan furniture to maintain the character of the local area. The entrance from the car parking area leads down sixteen steps to the villa's courtyard, past lavender bushes, jasmin, geraniums, lemon and pomegranate trees. The entrance door leads past a small bathroom and utility area into the spacious kitchen and open-plan dining and living areas. There are two sets of double doors leading onto the balcony, which commands a superb view of the village below, and further afield of the White Mountains, Souda and Almyrida Bays. It is an ideal setting for enjoying breakfast or an evening drink. The kitchen has every modern facility that you are likely to need. There is a staircase down to the three bedrooms, one double en-suite and two double bedrooms, plus a bathroom with shower and a storage alcove. All bedrooms have generous storage. The en-suite bedroom has a safe for your valuables. The two front bedrooms have steps leading down to the pool from the lower balcony. The pool illuminates at night for those who like an evening swim and there is a cool shower at the side of the pool where you can rinse-off after bathing. Sunbeds are provided for relaxing by the pool together with parasols to give shade in the heat of the day along with several conifers growing nearby.

The large double room has its own en-suite shower room. The other two, twin-bedded rooms share a bathroom which has a shower over the bath. The cloakroom is just off the utility area and contains toilet and sink. This is really useful when you don't want to go to the bedroom bathrooms.
All three bedrooms have plenty of wardrobe space for storage and there is a recess in the landing which is convenient for storing your suitcases until you need them again. There is a safe in the wardrobe of the double room. Each bedroom has a chair, bedside tables with lamps, dressing table and stool and mirror, all made by local craftsmen in a traditional Cretan design. We respectfully remind you that smoking is not allowed in the villa at any time, for the comfort and safety of all our guests. Our English house-keeper will do a mid-week sheet and towel change during your stay. We provide all linen and towels apart from beach towels.
|Further details outdoors|
The garden has many mature trees and plants such as lavender, jasmine, oleander and honeysuckle. The front garden has a pomegranate tree, from which the villa takes its name. October is the month to be there if you want to pick a pomegranate for breakfast! Mature trees offer shade near to the pool although of course we do provide sun-loungers and parasols. Near to the kitchen door is a small table with four chairs and a parasol, just right for morning coffee or a glass of wine in the cool of the evening. Outside the kitchen on the other side of the house is a large balcony with seating for six people under a pergola from where you can enjoy the views of the village, the White Mountains and the bay. Further along this balcony is a small sofa, useful for further 'view watching'. Next to the pool is a cool shower, not in a room, just under a trees, for cooling off or rinsing your hair. The pool is illuminated at night but the lights go off on a time-switch. There is a secure car-park, suitable for two small or one larger car. This is just off the road leading to the villa, then there are steps leading down to the house. The stairs have lights which are switched on at the top of the flight and can be turned off in the house. The house has outdoor lighting all the way round so that the garden can be enjoyed at all times. The pool is 7 metres by 4 metres and the shallow end is accessed by steps. We are obliged to remind guests that diving is not permitted at any time at that children using the pool should be supervised at all times. We know this is common sense but we are obliged by our insurance company to state this. We respectfully remind our guests that smoking is not allowed either in the villa or grounds. Our gardeners will try to maintain the garden while you are out so as not to disturb your privacy. David, our house manager also cleans the pool and will try to do this while you are out for the same reason.
The Watersports Centre in Almyrida provides individual, beginners and family tuition.
There are many steps at the villa so it is not suitable for guests who use wheelchairs or those who find stairs difficult.
The villa has a full EOT licence and fire certificate as issued by the Greek Tourist Board. However, the pool being private, is unattended at all times. When using the pool children should be constantly supervised.
The house and pool are maintained by a house manager who will deal with any needs that may arise to ensure that you have a relaxing and enjoyable stay whilst at the villa. His telephone number and that of emergency services are displayed at the villa along with a greek mobile phone to be used in emergencies.
The villa has free wi-fi/broadband
The Chania Prefecture region
Crete has beautiful unspoiled beaches, mountains and valleys. The White Mountains are so called because they are formed from limestone, though they do have snow on them in the winter, sometimes up to about March. The island has been invaded many times and influences of Romans, Phoenicians, Venetians and Moors are reflected in the architecture, especially in Chania, Rethymnon and Heraklion. The winters are damp and cool rather than freezing cold, although there has been snow twice since 1945! A visit to Chania is a must. The ancient harbour has many shops and tavernas all in beautiful settings. Good quality leather and jewellery are sold in markets and shops with 'special' prices' for you! Buildings bombed in 1944 now house tavernas sited in the cellars, open to the warm, night sky. You and your family will enjoy a ride in the traditional horse-drawn carriages to see the ruins of the Venetian Fort and the hidden gems of Chania.
The early part of the year is often wet but with many bright sunny days. Around the end of May the temperature rises, becoming increasingly hot in July and August when afternoons in the shade by the pool or on the beach are a popular pastime. The autumnal months are often mild and sunny with cooler evenings after dusk. Many villages have chestnut festivals with singing and dancing throughout the day during the autumn. There are raki festivals too with villages showing off their own particular home-made versions of this 'firewater', take care, this is very strong!
A short walk from the villa leads to the ancient Venetian Wells, shaded by numerous olive trees. There are many tracks inviting easy walking around the area or further afield, say to Almyrida or Kalives. Footwear such as trainers are ideal for walking in all areas of Crete. The village of Gavalohori has a small museum with a reconstructed interior of a traditional Cretan cottage, and examples of locally made lace. You may still see lace being made by black-clad village ladies sitting in their doorways. There are also examples of stone quarrying and relics of Minoan pottery excavated nearby.
The Cretan people are very friendly and welcoming, most speak good English or know someone who does! They welcome children in all the tavernas and kafenions at any time. You will often see extended families eating out late at night. The village is only a few minutes away on foot and has tavernas and a wonderful kafenion selling main meals, light meals, soft drinks, coffee and snacks. sit with a coffee and watch the world go by!
The local resort of Almyrida has a safe, shallow, sandy bay with a water-sports centre hiring water-sports equipment. This centre also arranges tuition for beginners and trips out to areas of diving interest. Sunbeds and parasols are available for hire on the beaches. There are shops selling beach equipment, clothes, and supermarkets selling familiar traditional foods and everyday items. There are many tavernas in Almyrida offering an excellent range of traditional Cretan fish and meat dishes as well as English and European dishes from burgers and chips to spaghetti. During the summer months you can buy English newspapers in Almyrida. Kalives and Vamos, where there are also several banks, ATMs and petrol stations.
Each year there are regional festivals such as the Raki festival, Chestnut Carnivals and the 'No' Day parades in villages and cities around Crete.
At the villa you will find a selection of leaflets, maps and books giving ideas for places to visit both locally and further afield. These include walking the Samarian Gorge, visiting ruined palaces, lakes and markets. In Almyrida there is a tourist shop and a hotel where from either you can book coach trips if you fancy a change from driving.

"WiFi made it perfect..."
This was our 3rd stay at Villa Rodi in 4 years, the photographs still don't do its view justice. My personal favourite occupation at Villa Rodi is to get up early, sit on the balcony and enjoy the quiet, cool time watching the sun behind the villa slowly creep across the valley floor while you drink the 1st coffee of the day. Heaven...
Gavalochori has 4 good Tavernas in the lively village centre with many more a 10 minute car ride away in Almyrida. There is also a small museum and the Women's Co-operative which are worth a visit.
The villa has everything in the description, including Wi-Fi which has been installed since our last visit, so expensive roaming data charges don't need to be paid.
The villa is looked after by House Manager David and Housekeeper Yvonne who do superb job in keeping the villa looking its best.

"Three weeks of bliss."
The villa is wonderful…step out of bed and fall into the pool. The outlook is superlative…over the sleepy, friendly village of Gavalochori all the way to Chania and the stars. And you won't find a more helpful owner. If you're looking for a place to do nothing, then this is the place to do it.

"Lovely, well equipped villa, in a peaceful village near the sea."
This is an outstanding villa in a beautiful part of Crete - it has my unequivocal recommendation. We stayed for one week over Easter. The weather was lovely and we spent the week in a mix of sunning on the terrace and by the pool, and sightseeing around the island.
The villa is perfect and has everything (and I mean everything!) you will need. First thing to do is buy a sack of oranges and make your own juice using the automatic juice squeezer. The village is nice - not too crowded but with little cafes and restaurants nearby. Big supermarkets also within easy drive.
My two teenage daughters loved it too. Highlight for them was learning to dive in the dive school down by the sea. We enjoyed the fish restaurants by the sea, and the trips to nearby Chania and Rethimno.

"Would go back again and again to this lovely house"
We stayed here with our 3 teenagers for the second time this April. We cannot recommend this house highly enough. It is beautifully designed with amazing views of the sea and the White Mountains. It is very well equipped and the welcome goodies on arrival are great, especially as the walk into the village (where there are shops and a bakery) is down a rather challenging hill!
There are countless places to visit if you want to be a culture vulture whilst the resort of Almirida is nearby where there are many cafes and tavernas and a lovely beach.
The people are so friendly without being pushy. It's just lovely!

"Best Family Holiday Ever"
I have never reviewed anything before but I just have to say thank you for our best family holiday so far!! Two teenagers and a toddler was a holiday dilemma but we couldn't have chosen anywhere … More
Thank you very much for your enthusiastic review. We try hard to make a lovely holiday extra special and we are so pleased that everything was to your satisfaction and to that of your family. We would love to welcome you to Villa Rodi again, perhaps next year? We are very fortunate in having wonderful English staff who work very hard to maintain extremely high high standards. David, our house-manager, who manages the paperwork and cleans the pool(he also speaks Greek), Yvonne our housekeeper who manages the laundry and cleaning and Mark who attends to the garden and 'odd jobs'. Without them I don't know what we would do! Again, thank you so much for your review and we are very pleased that you and your family had such a successful holiday. Best wishes, Lynne.

"A peaceful escape"
Wonderful immaculate villa retreat on the hillside overlooking the mountains and sea. Almyrida is only a ten minute drive away, providing the usual seaside tavernas and sandy bay. Therefore we found we had the best of both worlds. This area is a lovely part of Crete that still retains it's tradition.

"Superb Villa in good location"
This Villa was everything we had hoped for and more. The facilities were good and the rooms were more than adequate for our purposes (5 Adults). The pool is also a good size and suitable for using LiLos etc. there was a rubber ring and a lilo supplied. The welcome pack was also generous and well received. Our contact with the owners was hassle free and they provide useful local tips as well as a money off voucher for the local restaurant. The villa, pool and gardens are well maintained and the people who carry out these tasks are helpful. I would thoroughly recommend this Villa
