The Andalucia region
Andalucia is the largest region of Spain. It also has some of its richest history thanks to the legacy of the Moors who invaded in the 8th century. They left architectural gems in the cities of Seville and Granada
Seville with its Moorish Alcazar and amazing Cathedral, where Christopher Columbus is buried. Seville is the capital city of Andalucia situated on the banks of the Guadalquivir river, offers a real mix of old and new and is well worth a visit. Its a 2 hour drive away.
Granada nestled at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains offers the famous Alhambra Palace and its Albaicin (Arab quarter). Its also well worth a visit. Granada is 3 hours direct by train .
The Costa De La Luz is also worth visiting. This is the coastal region from Tarifa to Cadiz, known for its beaches but also for its wind! Tarifa is the kite surfing capital of Spain and has a very easy going feel. The beaches on this unspoilt stretch of the coast are definitely worth travelling to. Tarifa and the beaches of the Costa de La Luz are a 1 hour 30 minute drive away.
Andalucia's climate is one of the main reasons tourism has flourished. With long hot and sunny summers, July and August are the hottest months. April to June and September to October are good periods to visit as the weather is warm but not too hot. The coldest months (Where you need a fire in the evening) are from November-March. Most of the rainfall tends to occur between November-March
Gaucin is close by and is a charming traditional Andalucian village. Famed for its amazing views, on clear days you can see Gibraltar and Africa. Its famous for its castle ruins the "Castillo Del Aguila" (Eagle's Castle) originally a Roman fort, expanded by the Moors.
The village is also now famed for its community of artists; look out for the small art galleries dotted about the village as well as the art festivals it has.
The closest town is Ronda, a 50 minute drive away famed for its El Tajo gorge, that splits the town in two. It is also famous for having the oldest bullring in Spain "Plaza de Toros de Ronda" Its a great place to visit and has a wide selection of shops. Please note these generally open from 10.00-2.00pm then close and re-open from 4.00pm-8.00pm
