The Andalucia region
Andalucia is the largest region of Spain. It also has some of its richest history thanks to the legacy of the Moors who invaded in the 8th century. They left architectural gems in the cities of Seville and Granada
Seville with its Moorish Alcazar and amazing Cathedral, where Christopher Columbus is buried. Seville is the capital city of Andalucia situated on the banks of the Guadalquivir river, offers a real mix of old and new and is well worth a visit. Its a 2 hour drive away.
Granada nestled at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains offers the famous Alhambra Palace and its Albaicin (Arab quarter). Its also well worth a visit. Granada is 3 hours direct by train .
The Costa De La Luz is also worth visiting. This is the coastal region from Tarifa to Cadiz, known for its beaches but also for its wind! Tarifa is the kite surfing capital of Spain and has a very easy going feel. The beaches on this unspoilt stretch of the coast are definitely worth travelling to. Tarifa and the beaches of the Costa de La Luz are a 1 hour 30 minute drive away.
Andalucia's climate is one of the main reasons tourism has flourished. With long hot and sunny summers, July and August are the hottest months. April to June and September to October are good periods to visit as the weather is warm but not too hot. The coldest months (Where you need a fire in the evening) are from November-March. Most of the rainfall tends to occur between November-March
Gaucin is close by and is a charming traditional Andalucian village. Famed for its amazing views, on clear days you can see Gibraltar and Africa. Its famous for its castle ruins the "Castillo Del Aguila" (Eagle's Castle) originally a Roman fort, expanded by the Moors.
The village is also now famed for its community of artists; look out for the small art galleries dotted about the village as well as the art festivals it has.
The closest town is Ronda, a 50 minute drive away famed for its El Tajo gorge, that splits the town in two. It is also famous for having the oldest bullring in Spain "Plaza de Toros de Ronda" Its a great place to visit and has a wide selection of shops. Please note these generally open from 10.00-2.00pm then close and re-open from 4.00pm-8.00pm

"Well designed holiday villa and a real taste of beautiful Spain"
We are a busy family that needed a relaxing holiday and that's exactly what we got. With one three year old and one 19-year old, I was slightly unsure as to whether our holiday to Casa Habibi would be too quiet but it was just what we all needed.
Right from discovering Casa Habibi online and contacting the owner with questions, I felt reassured we would have a good time. He was very helpful, responding to calls and emails quickly and prior to setting off we were equipped with detailed driving instructions on how to get to Casa Habibi, which were most definitely spot on. We arrived in the dark so couldn't see the outside surroundings but the villa felt like a home from home straight away. A lovely note had been left by a friend of the owner explaining a few things together with a great welcome pack of food, milk and some delicious cheese.
The villa is spacious and thoughtfully designed. The kitchen is fully equipped, with everything you might need (especially if you have little ones) and with things like washing-up liquid and bin bags supplied, it made it easy. The lounge area was a relaxed space with a few games (Scrabble, cards, jenga and a Wii), TV and a great selection of DVDs should you need them. We didn't use the dining area as we ate outside.
The air-conditioned bedrooms are all well sized with plenty of wardrobe space (and with hangers!). One of the bedrooms is downstairs. All of the bathrooms were spotless, and again for families with kids, with bath mats and steps up to the sink supplied life is made so much easier.
The garden area is walled so totally safe for children with a good shaded area which houses a large table and chairs and a BBQ. Although there isn't a pool, there is a hot tub/Jacuzzi, which kept us happy and there is a river nearby for swimming with a small pebbly beach area. Again great for kids to enjoy, jumping off rocks, paddling and swimming. I understand there is a nice public pool in Gaucin, which is a short drive although we didn't visit if you prefer.
The villa is located centrally in El Colmenar, literally round the corner from a bakery, some lovely, and very reasonably priced restaurants and a few small food shops. There is a train station (confusingly called Gaucin, the next main place along), literally a five-minute walk away, which gives you access to a different view of the stunning scenery and some good places to visit. The locals are very welcoming and more than patient with our very limited Spanish vocab!
As a family our review gives a family slant but we agreed it would equally be ideal for a group of adults who love walking or are after a relaxing holiday. Having flown to Malaga before and stayed near the coast in the more commercial resorts, we felt this holiday was very different. We all felt we'd properly had the chance to relax and see a slice of real Spain. One week just didn't seem enough.
