The Andalucia / Malaga Province region
The Mediterranean is generally very clean and there are some fantastic beaches in between Estapona and Sabinillas about 30 mins drive away. The beach directly down from the village in Sabinillas is very clean and has cafes and bars along the promenade. Many like to swim at Porta Dugasa. The more rural beaches on the West coast are only 1 hours drive.
For a wilder beach experience then the Atlantic coast a few miles past Tarifa is where they hold the kite surfing championships. The beaches are stunning and there are some fantastic little beach side tapas bars for food and refreshments. It is a bit of a drive (about 1 hour) but well worth it.
Gaucin is in easy driving distance of the historic town of Ronda (about 40 mins). Ronda is famous for its spectacular gorge and the largest bull ring in Europe. Tarifa is great for shopping and hanging out in juice bars. Gibraltar has a wonderful museum of Gibraltian cave life 30,000 years ago. In ancient times Gibraltar was known as Calpe. The mountain opposite was Abyla. Calpe and Abyla were the two pillars of Hercules.
Jerez is about 2 hours away for sherry bodegas and the riding school. The drive to Grazelema via El Colmenar, then through the Cork forests of the National Park and through Ubrique is lovely, as is the drive from Estapona to Algatocin via *Las Penas Balncas. Near Cortes de la Frontera there is the Palaeolithic decorated cave, Cueva de la Pileta and a tiny Visgoth church cut into rock in the orchard.
To visit The Alhambra Palace at Granada it is advised to pre-book tickets up to two days in advance. This allows you to arrive comfortably in the early afternoon. Tel. (0034) 958 22 5409 fax. 958 22 8075. It takes about 2hrs 45mins to get to Granada but the Palace is exquisite.
Morocco can be visited on a day trip or for a short stay. A organised tour can be arranged in various places in Sabinillas or Algeciras or can be arranged independently.
The Gaucin area
The village is dominated by the Castillo Del Aguilla, which dates back to pre-Arabic times. You can explore the castle or take fantastic walks along old smugglers' routes. Local caves with Palaeolithic painting add interest and excitement to a day out. If the active lifestyle is not to your fancy why not take some time out and book a massage with one of the local therapists or take a dip at the nearby healing Roman baths. Gaucin is also famous for its artists, drawn by the scope for inspiration.
To round off a unique holiday treat yourself to tapas in the square or top cuisine in one of the fantastic restaurants within minutes of the houses. Eating out in Spain is the common way and can be extremely cheap. Breakfast is served in the Tapas bars marked, from about 9am. Lunch starts at 2pm but Tapas is put out from about 12 noon. In the village, Paco Pepes does big plates of raciones (larger plates than tapas but a similar principal). You can have massive prawns or wonderful meatballs with chips and salad on the side and a carafe of wine and it won’t break the bank.
There are local shops in the village providing most things you’ll need from organic fruit and veg to a well stocked pharmacy. There is also a covered market on week day mornings. A hypermarket right at the very north end of Estapona promenade / beach makes a nice trip. Their fish display is unimaginable. Old Rioja wines are found there at very good prices and their dry Spanish champagne is very popular. Estapona market is Wednesday am and has lovely ceramics, good shoes, spices and a medicinal stall. There is a Sol supermarket in Sabinillas and Carrefour in Estapona.
There are some wonderful walks around Gaucin, so take a guide or join the village hiking club. Fishing in the local Genial River is free, but you need a permit to fish in the national parks. Gaucín is also a major point for the transit of migratory birds. Full-time dwellers include many varieties of raptors, nightingales, partridge and quail, martins, doves, carpenter birds, etc.
There are numerous golf courses towards the costa, one of the nearest is at La Duquesa about 30 minutes away. For details of this and other courses in the area see www.teeggolf.com/home/courses.
